Comment: absurd decision on Obama makes a mockery of the Nobel peace prize (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/article6867711.ece)

Rarely has an award had such an obvious political and partisan intent. It was clearly seen by the Norwegian Nobel committee as a way of expressing European gratitude for an end to the Bush Administration, approval for the election of America's first black president and hope that Washington will honour its promise to re-engage with the world.

Instead, the prize risks looking preposterous in its claims, patronising in its intentions and demeaning in its attempt to build up a man who has barely begun his period in office, let alone achieved any tangible outcome for peace.

"...someday, the realm of liberty and justice will encompass the planet. Freedom is not just the birthright of the few, it is the God-given right of all His children, in every country. It won't come by conquest. It will come, because freedom is right and freedom works. It will come, because cooperation and good will among free people will carry the day."

Since when is it awarded on an effort?  I thought it was an award for accomplishments and as yet nothing has been accomplished.

Reagan is the man who should have WON the peace prize....

What has Obama done Ex?.....besides talk?  Actions are louder than words is what I was taught.  His WORDS
was NOT able to get him an Olympic Bid...he was SNUBBED by the WORLD.  Israel and Palestine are ignoring him.....We had the deadliest month on US soldiers in Afghanistan....Iran is on the verge of a Nuke bomb....he has only talked ONCE to his Commander, International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and Commander, U.S. Forces Afghanistan, General McChrystal before last week..........and NOW, he may be sending 40,000 troops into action....or not, he seems to be having problems making decisions...while soldiers die...

I bet Poland and the Czech Republic feels MUCH safer now that Obama has cancelled the missile defense sites that had been promised to these governments...he has opened his hand and heart to Cuba, Libya, Syria, Russia, and Iran.

the bottom line is........we WILL see, exactly HOW peaceful this world will be over the next few months NOW that Obama has been given this ...... award.

what is even MORE of a joke is, that he was nominated for this award back in Feb, eleven days AFTER he took office......THIS is an embarrasment to what THIS award SHOULD represent....it is OBVIOUSLY a political, left leaning JOKE.

Obama has actually accomplished quite a bit toward resolving the conflicts initiated by the last administration but I wouldn't expect his detractors to be informed enough to understand how diplomacy works.

Yes, Henry, just like you understand the Bible so much better than all of the biblical scholars, you understand the Nobel Prize better than the people who actually decide who gets it.

I will have to say one thing in his favor.  When he gave his speech he even said he didn't deserve it.  It isn't about trying to get something done it's about accomplishing it and as yet he hasn't accomplished he's just trying to accomplish.  He was nominated in Feb just on the basis of his speeches and that is just wrong.

QuoteSNL mocked President Obama for not passing his liberal agenda fast enough. They forgot to mention taking over the auto industry, firing greedy CEO's, appointing dozens of extremely weird czars, and sending the nationl debt through the roof. But AWOL, I would NOT have been happy IF Reagan won it, basicly 12 days AFTER he won office.  But, when the cold war ended, after years of Reagan's policies was in place and American Pride was restored.....THEN, I think it would have been appropriate.  Honestly, Obama has only TALKED a big game.....he has done NOTHING, to invoke peace in the world.  He has abandoned Israel, in their eyes.  He has screwed over Poland and surrounding countries....He has ignored his own appointed Military advisor, who has requested 40,000 more troops, to secure us from LOSING in Afghanistan.  The Olympic committee has shunned him...AFTER he flew over there to make his PITCH......at the least they should have given him another year to prove himself, before they GAVE him this award.....at least that is the way I clearly see it.

For the haters...

A transcript of Nobel Committee chairman Thorbjorn Jagland's announcement of Obama as Peace Prize winner: The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Committee has attached special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.

Obama has as President created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. Thanks to Obama's initiative, the USA is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.

Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future. His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population.

For 108 years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to stimulate precisely that international policy and those attitudes for which Obama is now the world's leading spokesman. The Committee endorses Obama's appeal that "Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges."

At what point did it become acceptable to the average US citizen, to go off half cocked when it comes to global diplomacy? We finally get a POTUS who understands that and the doom and gloom crowd cranks up the propaganda machine and feeds the parrot heads, who seem to eat it by the truckload.

Nothing is gained via the killing of human beings; only through dialog is progress obtained. If most of you had served in a military action consisting of hostile initiatives, you would better understand this.

"Somebody explain this to me: The president of the United States wins the Nobel Peace Prize and Rush Limbaugh joins with the Taliban in bitterly denouncing the award?

Why, oh why, do conservatives hate America so?

Okay, I know, it's just some conservatives who've been exhibiting what they, in a different context, surely would describe as "Hanoi Jane" behavior.

Let the rejectionists fulminate and sputter until they wear their vocal cords out. Politically, they're only bashing themselves. As Republican leaders -- except RNC Chairman Michael Steele -- are beginning to realize, "I'm With the Taliban Against America" is not likely to be a winning slogan.
