It was called Horehound and named after the herb from which it was made. http://www.internetconnections.org/horehound.htm

My dad used to eat the all the time and I always thought it was gross...

Mine, too.

He also ate countless "Spanish Bar Cakes" with endless cups of coffee.

Wow.

Sorry. Haven't been back to this thread for a while. My bad.

Spanish Bar Cake was a molasses/spice/raisin cake that was frosted with some generic white goo and packaged as a loaf.

Don't remember who made it, but my father (who dunked EVERYTHING in his coffee) ate it by the pound.

We all looked on in horror when he attacked a virgin bar cake at breakfast. The thing would last two, maybe three, breakfasts.

He also ate it for dessert. Wow.

Sounds like it would be really rich.

Dolly Madison, I'm not sure they're even around anymore, used to make a cake that was oval.  It was chocolate with a layer of some kind of white filling on the top covered in chocolate icing and had a walnut on top.  It was really good.  Whatever that cream filling was it had the cream filling in Twinkies and Hostess cup cakes beat all the way around.  It was really good...

I went to a local grocery store yesterday that just changed ownership and guess what?  They have a lot of these old candies that they sell in bulk!
$3.79 a pound!
I noticed those caramel rounds with the creamy inside circle that I used to love when I was a kid.
Yup--I'm $4.00 broker now  LOL
