It snowed this morning!! So pretty!  However, it is really going to be a bad TV day at least until the Inauguration starts.  The news people will be on there to tell how horrible it is outside with our 2 inches of snow all morning.   ::)

Sweet Jeebus, it's cold around here!  It's already down to 46 degrees and it isn't even much past midnight.  :spooked:   :cold: :snowman:

You guys up north must be freezing your collective arses off if it's that cold around here.

6 below at 6 a.m.

Now an incredibly warm 9 above.

It is sunny and above freezing.  Things are melting but I need to get to Home Depot for rock salt.  All of this will freeze when the sun goes down.  My driveway is on a slant and it pools water right in front of my stairs.  I'm going to need to get that fixed this spring I guess.  For now, I have a welcome mat on top of the ice!

I'm glad I went to the Depot when I did.  I got the last unopened bag of ice melt they had!!!  :spooked:

Watch out using that stuff, especially if the concrete is newer. It will eat the concrete up!  :spooked:

I know but I can tell already that I need my driveway redone.  There are too many low spots where water pools.  The drainage is terrible.  Since I'm only using it this once and won't need it again for probably 4 or 5 years, I don't think it will hurt it too bad.

Don't fool yourself. With unseasoned concrete just one application can cause widespread spalling of the surface. I have a neighbor who used it last winter one time and his driveway was ruined by last spring.  :spooked:

Good to know but I don't know what else I can do.  The sun does not directly hit the bottom of the driveway which is where my front stairs are.

You might be better off using an anti-skid with a little calcium chloride in it, or just the anti-skid (sand, etc.) by itself. If you're having above-freezing temperatures, the darkness of the anti-skid will probably enhance whatever sunlight is available.

I use coarse sand. Works pretty well too. As FTW says it draws the sunlight creating warmth and melting the ice/snow. While it isn't as effective as salt / icemelt, it does creat traction and work over time. Then when it rains it just washes away. . .

I'm not worried about sliding in my car.  I'm just concerned with the 2 inches of ice that is at the bottom of my stairs.  The sun doesn't hit it.  I know it will melt in the coming days, but I needed it to start working today.  I don't need a slip and fall right now!
