Title: AMERICAN IDOL - SEASON 7!
Post by: Sunny on January 27, 2008, 05:34:42 PM
Anybody in??  Hard to believe we're into ANOTHER season...Simon really needs to find some new lines, what do ya say???

"That's very cabaret"...

"Very ordinary...could find you in any love boat lounge"

"Sounds like a wedding singa..."

Regardless, has anyone caught your eye yet...kinda early in the game??

Honestly I haven't said that anyone sticks out except for the bad ones.  I was a bit surprised that the girl who said that Carrie Underwood looks like her actually had a voice.  I figured since she was so full of herself, she would be bad!

Good point, Henry. We'll have more to chat about once they get to Hollywood & knock it down to the top 20.

So now we're down to the top 24!!!

Anyone sticking out as a fave yet???

I have a few on the top of my list already...David Archleta (17 year-old, Salt Lake City, UT); Amanda Overmyer (23 year-old rocker, Mulberry, IN); Brooke White (24 year-old, folk singer, Van Nuys, CA); and   Michael Johns (29 yr-old Australian from Los Angeles).

I think I might even follow the trail this year.

Some very talented people.

Couple of drama queens.

Now is when it really gets good.

I just hope that Josiah kid didn't get too let down. He didn't appear to be too mentally strong. :-\

I'd say you've about got it pegged. Those are pretty much my favorites -- very diverse styles, too.

Man, this is going to be tough to select. I think that as it boils out, the singer with the favorite "style" of singing that will appeal to the largest segment of the audience, will win. The talent seems to be fairly equal, and, barring  some mega error or breakthrough that we haven't seen yet, it will remain an even-steven factor.

Josiah, I hate to say, seems to have a self-destruct button that he hits periodically in his life, apparently at the most inopportune times for him. Hope he heals up ok.

Post by: Sunny on February 16, 2008, 11:58:55 AM
Well said, ftw.

It will be quite interesting to see how versatile these picks can be, too...

May be a bit more difficult for Amanda to stray from the Janis Joplin/Joan Jett rocker style due to the gruffness in her voice; but Chris Daughtry managed it rather well in season 5.

Should be fun to watch!

Yeah, I felt for the little fella too........he wasn't good enough for the crowd he was in......but, I wish they would have sent him through for one more chance to prove himself.........i kinda liked the goofy Governor kid with the glasses........he really had a good voice...it would have been neat to see him develop a little further...

Oooh....can't wait until tonight, to see the girls!!!!! But, adding commentary from last night's show...

List of potentials that will go home first from the guys:

Jason Yeager
Luke Menard

Secondary list of guys that will be eliminated:

Garrett Haley
Chikezie(?)

Still on top of my list:

1. David Archuleta
2. Michael Johns

AND!!!

Adding this guy who did not gain much coverage during the audition phase. LOVED HIM LAST NIGHT!!

He's very "Jack Johnson"..."Paul Simon"...folk-but-modern (and adorable, minus the dreads):

JASON CASTRO

Jason Castro is HOT!

Who is the kid that looks like he should have been in the Partridge family?  And how did he make it to top 20?
Title: Re: AMERICAN IDOL - SEASON 7!

My favs are David Archaletia[sp], the 17 year old with the cute smile and also The guy from Australia. I think both of them have a great chance of winning. As far as the females go I like Annissa, I think her name is. Also the girl that looks like she is Oriental is good as well.
As far as the next William Hung goes, I think it should be that cry baby guy who did not make the finals at all.
Title: Re: AMERICAN IDOL - SEASON 7!

we like Michael Johns here at my house.  I was also impressed with Jason Castro.  He has some of the prettiest eyes ever.
David Archuletto was good too.

Hopefully the girls will be just as good tonight.  My favorite is Carly Smithson.

After watching the girls, not as sure about Amanda...and Brooke may not go very far, either. :-\

Adding Alaina Whitaker as one to watch.

I don't watch this but my wife has it on and I can hear it in the background. Whoever that guy just was that sang "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" made me get up out of my chair and go watch him. That dude nailed it if you ask me. I actually love that song and his cover was in my opinion almost better than the original!    8)  He left me wanting to hear more. . . which I assume is the goal for any performer.

Me too, PH! That was awesome.

Weirdly enough, I have it on now. You guys watched it 3 hours ago. LOL

I think that was David Hernandez. The only one that I wasn't entertained by was Danny Noriega.

I may have to watch this season.

Okay David Archuleta is a sweetie and he has a nice voice, but he didn't do John Lennon's song any justice...I don't care what Paula said!

I think David Archuleta just won the competition.......I think he voice is flawless...he has looks, personality, charm......and that little dude can flat out sing............Piya, I disagree with ya, I think that song could be #1 on the charts....

Simon said something I agree with. When you sing someone else's song, you're held to that standard. John Lennon did it better and I didn't like the changes he made. He does have an awesome voice. It's rich and clear for a kid so young, but I just didn't like that song on him.

Me too! LOL If I'm going to watch the daggone thing I need to rememeber who they are.

I'm pulling for the 1st girl - the Irish lady from San Diego. Is that the one you mean? But it's tough, because they're all quite good. The one w/the wierd hair didn't do so well last night, but I really like her. I didn't like the one that did the last Heart cover, "magic man". Her notes were too short.

Lennon lived the song.

Archuleta isn't old enough to find his a$$ with both hands yet, let alone understand the song well enough to give it meaning.

It may not be as good as Lennon, but, I REALLY thought he did a great job with the vocals and adding his own flavor to it........he did not butcher it by any means...I think it would be a hit, if it was released....

Henry, thanks for the link. I actually watched about 10 seconds of it before my gag reflex kicked in.

Sorry, dude. That just ain't right.

Nice dialogue going here...kinda surprised that Alaina got axed already, but that's what the show's all about -- the votes. Doesn't really matter how talented or (not) sometimes; it's who captures America's attention.

There's no doubt that David Archuletta will go to the end, unless he makes a major blunder.

Amanda, the rocker chick, would do much better on that rock talent show (if it's still around) - Rock Star SuperNova.

Seems like a guy's year to win.

Just the controversy alone has probably boosted Carly's vote count. I agree she can certainly belt out a good, hearty tune!

Brooke has been my husband's fave since the auditions.

I can't wait to see more of Jason Castro...I love his Ben Harper flavor.

Yeah, definitely not a dreads fan here either, Henry. But his eyes are enough to ignore the hair factor!

Kristy Lee has the 'sex appeal' factor going on with her low-cut shirts...and can sing. Will be interesting to hear her go after a country song next week.

And I think that David Cook may surprise us, too (rock dude) -- he's pretty good, just hasn't picked a song that showcases his talent!

The only one that I really don't care for is Kady. Her voice is good and her talent <weaving hand back and forth> is okay, but she has an attitude like she should be the only one there. I like Jason too, but I really wish he'd lose the dreads. It must be the mom in me, but I just want to wash, condition and comb the tangles out.

On spot, PIYA...Kady has attitude! Simon said it himself, "I don't think you're as good as you think you are"...(I think that was to her?). Either way, she doesn't really seem to have a confidence in who SHE is -- but is excellant in imitation.

LOL! Wash, condition, comb...now THAT's funny!

Sorry guys, I'm still not liking Archuleta. The Phil Collins song is better than last week, but I still don't think he's found "it". I didn't like the Wham song -  Luke? I didn't like Noriega either, but I loved the Lionel Richey cover and the dreadlock guy.
Title: Re: AMERICAN IDOL - SEASON 7!
Post by: bevis on March 06, 2008, 05:41:47 PM
archuleta is the only unique voice amongst all of them, sad to say.  that kady chick is an actress, not a singer, she's got a good voice, but she needs a director to tell her what to do.  i'd say that overall, this group IS, as a whole, better singers than any others, but no one really stands out even as much as a kelly clarkson (again, sad to say).  but then again, who cares?  i watch the show, and then i never pay any attention to what they do next.  except every once in a while going "wasn't that an idol person?" and sort of laughing at the whole idea. BRING ON "DANCING WITH THE STARS"!

Again, right on, Piya! Jason Castro (aka dreadlock guy) and David Cook (LR cover guy) both did an awesome job this week!

I think the deal with David Archuleta is the strain you hear in his voice. Piya, don't know if you watched the audition when he told his story? Something about having paralyzed voice chords & inability to speak?

Brook took the lead for my fave female this week.

Who cares what David did in the past. It is a talent show. That should have nothing to do with American Idol but like you said PIYA, always some scandal every year. Also what about Remille[sp], she had a pic on You tube or one of those sites with her breasts almost showing, who cares.

9. Rameile Malubay
10. Amanda Overmyer
11. Kristi Lee Cook
12. David Hernadez

Unsolicited commentary:

Chikesie's performance was pretty great this week. David Archuleta will predictably continue to get popularity votes...David Cook has taken the lead for my favorite male performer (but, most likely won't take the title). I love Brooke White & Jason Castro, too -- but fear they'll go home before they're ready.

Keeping an updated list:

1. David Archuleta
2. David Cook
3. Carly Smithson
4. Michael Johns
5. Syesha Mercado
6. Jason Castro
7. Brooke White
8. Chikesie
9. Rameile Malubay
10. Amanda Overmyer
11. Kristi Lee Cook
12. David Hernadez

It was definitely time for Amanda to go. She does a great Janis Joplin cover, but that's where her talents seem to end. Good luck to her!

You guys ever see this site?

http://www.dialidol.com/asp/predictions/Predictions.asp

This guy makes weekly predictions on who is heading home based on monitoring of the dial in lines that people use to vote.  From what I understand, the ones with the most busy signals end up at the top, and if your line isn't ringing you land toward the bottom.

His bottom three this week are:

Chikezie Eze
Jason Castro
Ramiele Malubay

I guess we'll find out later on how he did.  ;D

Carly and David

I absolutely love David Cook.  I like the way he takes chances with songs and makes them his own.  I didn't even realize he was singing Billie Jean until the part where it goes.."Billie jean's not my lover".  Even if he doesn't win this thing....he will go far.  it might be to his advantage to Not win American Idol...then he can take more offers.

I totally agree, Smokey! That's exactly why I like him as well. I loved his take on Billie Jean and he did a Lionel Richie song that knocked my socks off. IMO much better than the original.

I have to cheer for Carley 'cause she's kinda a homegirl. She works at a pub right down the street from my work BUT if David Cook wins I won't be disappointed.

Okay, so this is supposed to be a talent contest...but, when considering the "whole package", there are some things that go into consideration besides singing ability. Although obnoxious at times, the critique Simon brings to the show typically has merit...

On that note, he told Carly last week that he didn't think she "looked" the part.

Well, this week she definitely changed that!!! She looked so much more put together than she has in former weeks...from wardrobe, to make up and hair -- she looked great!

It's also about song choice. If she picks the right songs, she definitely has the chance to win.

But, David Cook still has my vote. ;)

OK...I guess it depends on what you like. I have an extensive background in music and I was classically trained. "Show" does absolutely nothing for me. Sometimes at a concert I will even close my eyes so that I can concentrate on the music and not be distracted by some silly 'showmanship.'

Great discussion going on here!!! With Carly out of the race, the top 3 is a little uncertain for me. Really surprised that Jason Castro and Brooke White are still hanging in. Personally like them both, but they don't have much versatility to their style.

At this point, still putting all the money on David Cook to win it all.

I hope what happened to Chris Daughtry does happen to David Cook.  David Cook is too good to be under the American Idol contract for 5 years.  It has only worked out for 2 of the past winners and more people that made it in the top 5 have careers that are just as good, if not better.  He will get picked up quickly.
Title: Re: AMERICAN IDOL - SEASON 7!
Post by: smokeykat on April 26, 2008, 11:37:23 AM
I love David Cook.  I like the way he can take a song and make it completely different.....like he did with Billie Jean and then the Dolly parton Song.  he will do so much better without the contract from Idol.  he is another Daughtry...one that will be much better without the Idol contract to have to go by.

I can not stand David A.  All he ever does is stand there.  Yes he can sing...but he has no stage presence at all.  I am really surprised that Jason and  Brooke are still there.  They can also sing...but everything sounds the same anymore.

Excellant question, Piya...it was rather peculiar this week when Ryan Seacrest addressed the audience by saying, "The rumors about Paula are not true, she's part of our family, and we love her".

Ummm....it's apparent that she's struggling with SOMETHING...her glassy eyes & slurred speech are dead give aways...

Syesha's gone. I've wanted her gone since "Proud Mary".

So, we're left w/the two Davids.

I predict David Cook. :ye:

You think? I'm glad he praised him quite a bit though. 1. He deserved it, but 2. He always looks like he's going to burst into tears every time he faces the judges. I didn't watch it last night, but I noticed that Simon was very giving in compliments to young David on Tuesday night.

Personally, I think the best David won. He's the most marketable at this point, but young David will have an awesome career anyway.

I think these two guys are very talented...Cook is very original and has shown a lot of class..........will be a very good Idol winner...

David A has a very unique and glassy voice, and will be very successful, he has STILL a litte maturing to do....he has got to quite being overwhelmed by everything.

this was a good year.......i really enjoy watching these kids go from rags to riches.....Cook was tending a bar a few months ago........now, he is on top of the world....

I liked it this year, by letting them play instruments...I liked the variety of artist/mentors this year.  I would like to see more weeks of hollywood, with real talented kids and less of the audition process....

I think it is a good, quality family program....me and the little hawks had a fun time watching this year.

American Idol is just another shovelful of dirt on an era.  for most of our lives, music was supposed to express something deep and meaningful about ourselves.  that's why the songwriters became such important figures and the performers who wrote their own songs are the icons of our generation.  idol is about technical proficiency and smarmy "show busy" performances that comfort the audiences rather than challenge them in any way.  bill murray's lounge singer would have good shot at idol.

Agreed.  It's about 'entertainment' rather than creative/expressive art and talent, but it's also been that way since businesses/corporations discovered that homogenized 'entertainment' was a far more 'marketable/packageable' than actual art/talent and could easily be created by manipulation of the public 'taste'.

Take hip-hop, rap, new R&B, whatever you want to call it.  It's the lowest common denominator, usually nothing more than grade school jumprope and playground songs and limerickal, set to highly amplified versions of the heartbeat, and 'performed' by the untalented and inept.

The industry loves it because it's a highly commercial marketable product - it takes little to no effort/investment to produce and the faces and output are highly interchangeable, one falls out of favor with the public or the industry, just insert the next same face with the same output.

In the end the public is merely a 'consumer' and a tool of corporate/Madison Ave. manipulation.

The market gets what the market wants.  POP music is labeled popular because it is popular and it doesn't matter that ALL the pop charts have ALL been driven by 13 year old little girls since music started being sold in one form or another.

Now there is also SMART music.   Not for the masses.  Only a few get it.  It takes intellect, or a "soulful" connection to the music or the poetry of the lyrics (the music still has to be good or the lyrics just won't matter and vice versa, some music is so good, it doesn't matter what they are singing which is why large numbers of people get the lyrics wrong for decades for some very popular songs).

I am not a big jazz fan, but I do like some of it because it is SMART music.  Most people will never "get" jazz.  It isn't intended to be popular and never can be.  If it IS popular (i.e., chuck mancioni, et al), then it AIN'T jazz, period.

There is SMART music in every genre, but one has to seek it out in most cases as, you got it, if it AIN'T popular, it doesn't get the air time.  I do like some rap music, which many times is more or less reggae style rap, or WORLD music rap.  Try this one; if it's the lyrics in rap you don't like - Vekhi Lagdi - Apache Indian & Hard Kaur.mp3  It is Reggae, World Rap, in my opinion.  I think some SMART rap is: Tupac & Dr Dre - California love.mp3.  And there are tons of "white" rap that comes to mind, including a few songs by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

I can tell you there is almost zero songs that I like from the "POP" charts.  I really think all that music is for the NASCAR crowd, and the fact that American Addle (and So You Want to be a Dance Star?, and So You Want to Marry a Millionaire?, and, and, and) is even on the air demonstrates that the masses are easily amused and just don't have anything better to do with their brains.

So, don't confuse popularity with taste.  They are usually diametrically opposed.

I'm not certain you see what I'm saying.

My position is that there is creative/expressive art and talent, and then there is 'product' - that the industry markets, packages, and sells.

Through the marketing strategy of 'cool', the industry uses the media - through advertisements, videos, and shows on the order of 'Idol' - to manipulate the public into liking, and then buying, what they're selling - all the while duping the masses into thinking it's their 'taste' rather than the industry's machinations.

I think music is just entertainment....nothing more...nothing less............I certainly don't need Bob Dylan to tell me that times are a changin.....John Lennon was a great song writer...but he did nothing to make my life any better other than giving me some entertainment...

I do not like most pop music or rap........it does not entertain me.......but, it DOES entertain millions of others...and that is okay...

American Idol, is just another form of entertainment......my family and I, enjoyed watching these young kids...some that are truly talented...just needed a break......AI, is one of the few shows that are on, that a family can sit together for an hour or two and not worry about explicit language being used or any violence....just watching some of these kids on AI grow and mature over the course of a few weeks....being groomed and trained.

and I have NOT have had any urges to drink "Coke" or go out and buy a "Ford" because they were big sponsers of AI.....though I agree with Y, it IS absolutly a "marketing" tool...the bottom line is..."MONEY"....and Coke and Ford pay BIG MONEY to show thier product to the "masses".......

Sorry, but I got exactly what you mean.  The marketing and product is for the masses because they can be duped (e.g. religion).  They do manipulate the public and convince them what is popular.  As I said, 13 yr old little girls dictate the POP charts which is the fuel for the marketing approach to the "masses".

The masses will never get the SMART, artful music.  Hank is a good example.  He sees music as "entertainment" and nothing more.  The perfect sentiments of someone that would never understand the "intelligence" or the "art" in the music (play, poem, book, movie, documentary (vice Am Addled), painting, architecture, or any other form of non-entertainment he would ignore).

I will take a look at something different and evaluate it for its intelligence or art.  So, I don't just reject the POP stuff, off hand.  But, if it has POP appeal, it doesn't hold my interest very long (Coldplay, newer Green Day, et al)

and I DO appreciate THOSE that have the talent to express it.........my son is a very good musician, or at least one in the making........he was named musician of the year at his high school last week.........he and I have a great time talking music together and listening to music...he likes classical to classic rock n  roll.........he plays in a worship band at his church.........he is helping to write a percussion line for another high schools marching band........I actually DO have a pretty good understanding of music...........I play "feebly" on guitar.........took lessons when I was a teenager.........I never really had the confidence thing worked out..........I can play still a little when it's just me and the kids around...never could muster up enough confidence to play in front of others.........

Why would you say such a thing Bo D?  I know musicians who think that music is nothing more than entertainment.  Although I couldn't express it I understood music before I had any formal training in it.  The thing is different people feel and listen to music differently whether they're trained or not and that don't make their opinion of it wrong just different.  I also feel and listen to different music in different ways.  There is music which is strictly entertaining and music which is art.  Each person feels and hears music differently even each song is listened to differently IMO.  I don't approach music any differently now than I did before I was trained I just know more about why I feel the way about it that I do and listen to it differently.
Have you ever listened to the difference between a musician who plays by ear and one who is formally trained, even in college, who plays strictly by the notes?  The trained one might have a better understanding of whats going on but as far as knowing more about music and understand it as an art form IMO the one with no training wins hands down.  That might not make sense to you but its the only way I know how to explain why your comment, IMO, is wrong.

I'm sorry I guess I should have said I disagree with your opinion which is actuallly what I meant.  It just seems to me that most musicians have the opinion that they know more and can appreciate music better than someone who isn't a musician or isn't trained in music and that rubs me the wrong way.  Kind of musician snobbery is what I call it.

I also agree with me.  There are studio musicians on some high-level work from artists.  They are all TECHNICALLY correct in their presentation of the music, but couldn't tell you anything about what the music really is, as they have no real APPRECIATION of it.

You know, Loc, I've been a pretty devoted follower since the 2nd season...and I agree with you 99%. This season has about 1% of the talent in comparison to previous years.

Bowersox is getting my vote at this point because she clearly has raw talent, but I'm not completely convinced that she has the star power to be an "American Idol".

it is early, I think many of these kids will develop as the weeks pass by...and by the time the finals get here, there will be an obvious American Idol....that is the fun for me to watch is ..... watching these kids be groomed and developed into tomorrows star...

many of the AI kids from the past are doing very well in the music industry...I enjoy following some of these kids, even though I may not be a fan of their 'style' of music...

Okay, so I've gotta comment on this...even though the 'talent' doesn't appear to be comparable to former years, the addition of Ellen has been a definite improvement over Paula Abdul. Not that I watch the show for the "reality tv" aspect or drama of it all, but Ellen cracks some pretty good jokes & one-liners.

Someone that did well this past week & stood out to me as one to watch is Aaron Kelly (and he's from PA!). I think they are slightly over-emphasizing Siobhan Magnus. She has a good voice, but I'm curious if they're trying to replicate Adam Lambert from last season?

My take: AMEX Adle reflects the popular choice of most americans and most americans have the taste of lemmings.  Pop music charts reflect that (usually based on record sales to 13yr old little girls) and AMEX Adle is no different, or  perhaps even worse.

Crystal Bowersox & Casey James have the most natural talent this season.

If it's popularity, then Michael Lynch/Tim Urban will continue to stick around.

Andrew Garcia or Katie Stevens will be the next 2 to go home, IMO.

Not too sure what the bag pipes were all about, but Lee Dewyze has a very current voice.

What I enoy about this show is seeing a kid who was selling hot dogs at a root beer stand....get a chance of a lifetime.  Seeing how they take some of these goofy kids and transform them into a star.......and a few has honestly done a great job.

such as Carrie Underwood and Chris Daughtry...both of them have won grammy's and all sorts of awards, and are selling out venues all across this country.

It is a good family time for my kids, wife and I....with all of the other crap on TV....this is a nice quality time for us to watch the tube together and talk.
