Title: My thought of the day....
Post by: Henry Hawk on July 10, 2009, 08:28:27 AM
On March 3, 1863 while in the midst of the Civil War, the U. S. Senate requested President Abraham Lincoln to "designate and set apart a day for national prayer and humiliation" because:

"Sincerely believing that no people, however great in numbers and resources or however strong in the justice of their cause, can prosper without His favor; and at the same time deploring the national offences which have provoked His righteous judgment, yet encouraged in this day of trouble by the assurances of His word to seek Him for succor according to His appointed way through Jesus Christ, the Senate of the United States do hereby request the President of the United States, by his proclamation, to designate and set apart a day for national prayer and humiliation."......... :)

I recall Morgan submitted tons of research  on the WTH forum which showed Abe not to be the great emancipator.

Minority Broadcasters Seek Federal Aid  (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124752187967935029.html)

WTF?...........My thought of the day is ..... we got to QUIT giving money out to support something that the people do not want......IF, the people wanted, what these broadcasters are broadcasting, then there would be NO problem....spending money on something that Americans do not want....is BAD.

Just ask yourself, Henry, if hackers can get into the Pentagon, the FBI, and Dial-A-Honey databases, what do you think they are doing to these "smell signatures."

Shhhh... secret... don't tell... as we speak I am fooling around with the tantalizing aroma of bacon on a biscuit. Smothered in Velveeta cheese. Can't wait to see what the mujahadim make of that! Lester Sasquatch says it would turn a vegetarian carnivorous.

One of my best friends since childhood, has a son who is going to the State wrestling tourney tonight....He is 43-3 and ranked 10th in the State.  He is only a sophomore..and he was the first PHHS Arabian to go as a freshman...He is a great kid, and I hope and pray for him to be at his best this weekend..

He has two older brothers who both has State Wrestling experience....I think this one may very well be the best wrestler to spawn from this family.

anyway, just sharing an exciting moment, for me anyway....I am contemplating in going to fieldhouse tonight, to watch.

Wall Street Journal Sizes up Obama -

They've Got Him Figured out...a short article from the Wall Street Journal that needs to be read by every level headed American!!!

by Eddie Sessions:

"I have this theory about Barack Obama. I think he's led a kind of make-believe life in which money was provided and doors were opened because at some point early on somebody or some group took a look at this tall, good looking, half-white, half-black, young man with an exotic African/Muslim name and concluded he could be guided toward a life in politics where his facile
speaking skills could even put him in the White House.

In a very real way, he has been a young man in a very big hurry. Who else do you know has written two memoirs before the age of 45? "Dreams of My Father" was published in 1995 when he was only 34 years old. The "Audacity of Hope" followed in 2006. If, indeed, he did write them himself. There are some who think that his mentor and friend, Bill Ayers, a man who calls himself a "communist with a small 'c'" was the real author.

His political skills consisted of rarely voting on anything that might be deemed controversial. He went from a legislator in the Illinois legislature to the Senator from that state because he had the good fortune of having Mayor Daley's formidable political machine at his disposal.

He was in the U.S. Senate so briefly that his bid for the presidency was either an act of astonishing self-confidence or part of some greater game plan that had been determined before he first stepped foot in the Capital. How, many must wonder, was he selected to be a 2004 keynote speaker at the Democrat convention that nominated John Kerry when virtually no one had ever even heard of him before?

He outmaneuvered Hillary Clinton in primaries. He took Iowa by storm. A charming young man, an anomaly in the state with a very small black population, he oozed "cool" in a place where agriculture was the antithesis of cool. He dazzled the locals. And
he had an army of volunteers drawn to a charisma that hid any real substance.

And then he had the great good fortune of having the Republicans select one of the most inept candidates for the presidency since Bob Dole. And then John McCain did something crazy. He picked Sarah Palin, an unknown female governor from the very distant state of Alaska . It was a ticket that was reminiscent of 1984's Walter Mondale and Geraldine Ferraro and they went down to defeat.

The mainstream political media fell in love with him. It was a schoolgirl crush with febrile commentators like Chris Mathews swooning then and now over the man. The venom directed against McCain and, in particular, Palin, was extraordinary.

Now, nearly a full year into his first term, all of those gilded years leading up to the White House have left him unprepared to be President. Left to his own instincts, he has a talent for saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. It swiftly became a joke that he could not deliver even the briefest of statements without the ever-present Tele-Prompters.

Far worse, however, is his capacity to want to "wish away" some terrible realities, not the least of which is the Islamist intention to destroy America and enslave the West. Any student of history knows how swiftly Islam initially spread. It knocked on the doors of Europe, having gained a foothold in Spain .

The great crowds that greeted him at home or on his campaign "world tour" were no substitute for having even the slightest grasp of history and the reality of a world filled with really bad people with really bad intentions.

Oddly and perhaps even inevitably, his political experience, a cakewalk, has positioned him to destroy the Democrat Party's hold on power in Congress because in the end it was never about the Party. It was always about his communist ideology, learned at an early age from family, mentors, college professors, and extreme leftist friends and colleagues.

Obama is a man who could deliver a snap judgment about a Boston police officer who arrested an "obstreperous" Harvard professor-friend, but would warn Americans against "jumping to conclusions" about a mass murderer at Fort Hood who shouted "Allahu Akbar." The absurdity of that was lost on no one. He has since compounded this by calling the Christmas bomber "an isolated extremist" only to have to admit a day or two later that he was part of an al Qaeda plot.

He is a man who could strive to close down our detention facility at Guantanamo even though those released were known to have returned to the battlefield against America. He could even instruct his Attorney General to afford the perpetrator of 9/11 a civil trial when no one else would ever even consider such an obscenity. And he is a man who could wait three days before having anything to say about the perpetrator of yet another terrorist attack on Americans and then have to elaborate on his remarks the following day because his first statement was so lame.

The pattern repeats itself. He either blames any problem on the Bush administration or he naively seeks to wish away the truth.

Knock, knock. Anyone home? Anyone there? Barack Obama exists only as the sock puppet of his handlers, of the people who have maneuvered and manufactured this pathetic individual's life.

When anyone else would quickly and easily produce a birth certificate, this man has spent over a million dollars to deny access to his. Most other documents, the paper trail we all leave in our wake, have been sequestered from review. He has lived a make-believe life whose true facts remain hidden.

We laugh at the ventriloquist's dummy, but what do you do when the dummy is President of the United States of America.

An oldie for any plumbers in the audience....Troll, you might like this one...

"This lawn supervisor was out on a sprinkler maintenance job and he started working on a Findlay sprinkler head with a Langstrom 7″ gangly wrench. Just then, this little apprentice leaned over and said, "You can't work on a Findlay sprinkler head with a Langstrom 7″ wrench." Well this infuriated the supervisor, so he went and got Volume 14 of the Kinsley manual, and he reads to him and says, "The Langstrom 7″ wrench can be used with the Findlay sprocket." Just then, the little apprentice leaned over and said, "It says sprocket not socket!"

;D .....plumbing humor is a lost art....

I just took a break, walked out back of the building at which I work.  It is freakin gorgous outside right now!!  The combination of sunshine and the gentle breeze paralyzed me....it shook up the gray matter in the confines of my cranium...and for a brief moment I was 10 years old again and ready to start my day with my buddies, heading down the road to build a fort in a woods that was my home away from home every summer.....we would spend countless hours in that woods....the smells, the carefree happiness that it provided for me had almost been forgotten until moments like I just had, every so often, when the temperature is just right and the sunshine hits my face in a certain way, I take that brief journey to the day that I cherish with all of my heart....I was so blessed to have a wonderful childhood...and I got to give thanks to God, for allowing me to have experienced those days and moments like I just had.....

despite the turmoil that politics have had on me....THIS is going to be a great day!!..

Don't wait Henry. . . Seriously. Start small and with something you can afford now! Save yourself a lot of frustration by providing yourself a decompression chamber! Get a used one, and I know someone who is selling one at a good price. . . (And so do you!)

Had a time line in place before Bush left office too and it has passed because it wasn't practical, as Obama found out when he took office, that's why Code Pink is protesting.  That and the fact that Obama expanded the war by sending troops to another country too.

Maybe the media I read didn't cover these protests, as you say. All I could find regarding Code Pink actions recently (2009 & 2010)were some stunts demanding BP be held accountable for the oil spill damage, a condolence call at the Turkish embassy in DC and a bit of street theater in San Francisco following the attack on the relief ships to Gaza, and an ongoing campaign to show up at Karl Rove book signings.

Please share with us all the details of their anti-war protests that you are so fortunate to have facts about. Only those that took place in 2009 and 2010, please, since you insist they are still protesting deployment.

And for the record, the media outlets where I found the oil spill, Gaza convoy, and author Rove stories are ABC, CNN, CBS, UPI, the Washington Post, the LA Time, SF Chronicle and a bunch of local newspapers and broadcast outlets.

So once again this is a case where the POTUS is damned if he does, and damned if he doesn't. If he had not sent in the reinforcements requested by the operations leadership, he'd have been castigated, and was despite sending them.

He chose to err on the side of caution and demonstrate the support for the men and women actively risking their lives every second of every day. I applaud him for that.

Moreover, his actions did nothing more than re-deploy headcount toward the initiative from which they were diverted in order to address the Iraqi oil campaign put into place by the Shrub. . .

How can it be smoke and mirrors if no one knew they were protesting if the lamestream media didn't cover it?  They sure didn't hesitate to cover any and all protests about Bush.  Why is it different now?

C'mon, me, I asked for coverage on war protest demonstrations. You gave me a position statement, and a bunch of calendar entries for proposed events. Where is the coverage of a war protest demonstration that actually took place?

I'm sure you'll tell me the main stream media did not cover any of them. So where are the stories from World Net Daily?

And I still think it is odd that the main stream media did cover the anti-BP demonstrations, Gaza convoy support events, and all those hilarious Rove book-signings, but somehow missed all the anti-war demonstrations.

My thought of the day has to do with my personal attitude...........I have a desire to elaborate on my views on God and Christ...........I want to be clear that I have nothing but a strong faith in my personal relationship with God, and I have accepted that Christ is the Son of God, exactly, as noted in the Holy Bible....I realize that to some folks, a certain behaviour is not always a positive reflectance of Christianity...and I may very well be a poor example of what Christ WANTS as a Representative...and to most folks on here, really don't give a rat's behind how I act, nor do they really care if I or themselves are offending God or Christ....for most folks on here have no faith nor belief in such.  I have, over the years, come to the conclusion, that I am at my most peace, when I am being myself.  I at one time believed that you had to become something other than what you are, to be accepted by my peers of the Christian family.
I think THAT is where Christians make a huge mistake....that is where the word "hypocrite" becomes such a lethal weapon among those who are looking for excuses to NOT take that walk of faith with Christ....for me, I have found that reading the word, especially that of the New Testament offers some real guidance and comfort to me, and has layed a very good general guideline to raising my children, my marriage and overall, LIFE itself.
I'm not going to preach or even remotely try to impose any of my beliefs, but rather I just felt compelled to remind myself and others who care, that I am very much a believer and make no bones about it.....and I also realize that I have NO animosity toward those who do NOT believe....I have my own life to live....and though I STILL struggle with issues such as abortions, and I will always have a sense of urgency to protect those little ones who may never get a chance....I honestly DO understand and respect those who believe there is no urgency....it is simply a choice.....because until you have a faith in God, as is in the Holy Bible, you cannot begin to fathom, the LOVE that has been given to us.

enough said, but I have said what was on my mind....and THAT is MY thought of the day.

The Tool

Since the beginning of time religion has struggled for control of the people with those who would lead them; from the healers of prehistoric times to tribal leaders, kings, queens, and presidents, the leaders of every religion have wrestled with them for control. During the times before the emergence of Christ and Christianity, the oracles and fortune tellers / astronomers would utilize naturally occurring and predictable astronomical events as signs to the leaders that something they personally wanted done needed to happen. This same methodology was utilized as a means with which to turn the kings and queens of the world into mere puppets of those with the "secret knowledge" they disguised as the ability to hold counsel with the creator. And they took advantage of it to amass personal wealth and power as a means to increase their station in life.

However, it didn't take too long before some of the leadership back then began to figure things out for themselves, by holding counsel with those who possessed new ideas and theories and educating themselves surrounding these things. The old tricks were not what they used to be and these individuals began to lose their grip on the reins of power; and a new way needed to be identified as a means to save themselves.

Along came Jesus Christ and this new idea of Christianity. Now just suppose for a moment, (and I hope you can free up your mind/thought process for long enough to give this some thought) Jesus was nothing more than a man. A man divinely inspired by the creator even works for me. His thoughts and actions, his words, were so revolutionary for the times in which he lived, (Remember, humanity burned "witches" many centuries later and this was after "civilization" had supposedly took hold of the worlds populations), that he was perceived as a threat, an aberration even, by the people of his time. (Some of them anyway. Remember, he did end up on the cross and died at the hands of the "justice" of the times). Yet, amongst the population he struck a chord with many. Some were inspired to follow him, and humanity being humanity, and writers being writers and taking literary license as they usually do, began writing down some of his actions and recording them in the methods of the times.

No doubt some believed so strongly in the things that this man was doing, that they felt compelled to try to bring the point across within the words they placed to "paper", much like the great novelists of the American Wild West days, exaggerating some points to retain the attention of their readers, and hopefully drive home their intended message; that Jesus was onto something here and his teachings were worth passing onto the generations to come.

Eventually the powers that were in control deemed this man enough of a threat to trump up some charges against him that would enable them to sentence him to his death, and so it was that it came to pass. Only problem was that by the time they had got around to executing him he had developed quite the following, and to make matters worse those within his inner circle had written letters outlining some of his deeds, and lot of his messages. They found themselves unable to quell the movement, much less control those with the information. (Certainly no one back then could even fathom that later generations would take their tales so literally, certainly to the extreme that some do today. And they certainly never could have imagined that science would one day have the ability to identify remains 2,000 years old and even millions of years old.)

As the years passed on the humanity within them came to the forefront, as those within the movement jousted for control of it; greed. That hunger for wealth and power rose to the top and with it began the scheming against each other. Of course after some time those with allegiances to the leaders of the people had infiltrated the movement and someone decided that all this documentation had to be assembled in one place, in order for everyone to better understand the message this man had for humanity.

Thus came about the effort to assemble the books of the "bible" through the editing of the writings of humanity from the times. What a power play this would have been for them. Determine what goes in, what stays out, and make the messages so subjective as to be able to make them say whatever you wish, thus control the people, the power, the wealth for themselves. The "gospels" are only "gospels" because they were deemed as such by the very individuals who edited and assembled them way back in the day. Do I believe there is some truth / value to be had within them, sure I do. But I do not agree with the subjective interpretations and incomplete record that this whole process of editing has left them to be. It gives me reason to doubt, to question, and that is enough.

From my days spent in a Christian University, it is clear that the bible was assembled from a collection of "letters" written by followers of the Christian faith. Parables, they were written by human beings, assembled by other human beings much later on, and magically these same human beings doing the assembly felt they had the authority to exclude anything they felt wasn't in keeping with their personal ideas of what the Christian faith is supposed to mean.

Each of these "letters were written by key figures within the circle of trust that was maintained by Jesus; including a key woman that history has shown was unfairly ostracized within later society and made out to be a whore. The reason for this is clearly obvious if one reads her letters, for they document a relationship with this man Jesus, painting a portrait of him that opposed the path the religion needed to take in order to render to those who assembled these works the personal wealth and power they desired. Moreover, even portions of those letters authored by those included within the completed text contained large portions of such information, and if they were included it would undermine the whole purpose behind this activity! So in their infinite "wisdom" these men that lived centuries after these authors had died, took it upon themselves to edit out everything that went against what they personally felt was the path this religion and its followers were to follow.

What provided them this right to undertake such a ludicrous action? How could they know or understand the true meaning and intention of the writers so many years later, much less know something more than they did surrounding the subject of said writings? They took it upon themselves to decide for humanity the path of the religion moving forward, because the true purpose of this whole activity was to create the new tool required to seize back the control lost when the leadership of the time became enlightened.

The book was assembled to purposely be vague and subjective in interpretation, to allow those who obtain positions of power within the church to wield power over the flock, to bend them to their will, and to allow them to accumulate personal wealth and power over the masses. As it has been utilized throughout history and continues to be. So certainly when empirical evidence is discovered there will be no limit to what can and will be done to obscure it; for it threatens their livelihood!

Throughout the subsequent centuries the leadership of Christianity has waffled upon interpretation of passages, providing explanations that best served their purpose at each time the questions arose; in each instance taking the stance that they are only passing along that which God has provided only to them, by speaking only to them. Placing themselves above all others amongst them and in the position to control and decide what is right and what is wrong.  After all, does not the book clearly document the divine power provided to a man by God, and since it is God he can provide this same power to those chosen by him for eternity!

It is no wonder then that all these centuries later humankind struggles to understand why it is so contradictory, and just how it is that a man can sit down and write a set of letters on the very same subject matter, but have the continuity broken up by the fact that others much later adjudicate certain portions of that writing as incorrect.  How can a man be divinely inspired one moment but not so in the next? Human greed is the answer. To exclude "letters" that document the fact that this same man married, that he had children, and when he was crucified his body was secreted away by those who loved him most, to be later laid to rest within a family tomb, only serve to further cast doubt upon the whole business.

Is it any more of a wonder that centuries after the completion of this book, when physical evidence providing empirical proof that a key foundational element of this book is wrong, is categorically denied and dismissed after a decade of it being hidden away from the world?

Peoples Temple was founded in 1955 in Indy. In 1965 it moved to California, and in 1977 to Guyana (part of it anyway.) Congressman Ryan of California led the trip to investigate concerns from families of members that they had been brainwashed, or were being held against their will. Since Ryan was Californian, it is a logical assumption the families who asked for the investigation were from California. But Jimmy Jones himself was indisputably Hoosier.

http://www.infoplease.com/spot/jonestown1.html

My younger child (who wasn't born until 1986) once was chastised by paternal family members because she stopped going to Mass. She told them she had joined a new church ... although some people called it a cult... and next Sunday it was her turn to bring the Kool-Aid. So I doubt that either California or Indiana can lay sole claim to the legend. It has turned in to an archetype!

Hold on, Sandy. The 1955 Peoples Temple was a very different critter from the Jonestown zombie farm.

On April 4, 1955, Jones and the members of his new congregation, which numbered at around20, founded the Wings of Deliverance. This group was looking for an early expansion and the doorwas left opened for other congregations as affiliates. The Wings of Deliverance had just gotten started when it changed its name. With its interracial followers, his "healing powers" and the widepread Pentecostal use of the world temple, they called the group The People's Temple. With a choir, a youth group, room for 700 people and Jone's reputation for his healing ministry, it did not take long for large crowds to come and fill the place up.

The People's Temple then founded social services all over the city which gave the new church a chance to promote its liberal idea of a social gospel and to help reopen the eyes of the city and possibly even more to the problem of poverty. In 1959, Jones set up an orphanage adoption fund to closely mimic his own "rainbow family". Jim and his Marceline adopted children of different races and culture as their own children. Another social service provided by The People's Temple was a free restaurant and social service center in the Temple's basement. The restaurant opened its doors on February 24, 1960 and it became a fast success, known to give out thousands of meals per month to the homeless.

Your perspective depends on where you are standing ... and when. Remember, the Black Panther Party organized community programs ranging from free breakfast for children, to free health clinics, to rent strikes resulting  in tenant ownership of their buildings, to Liberation School for grade-schoolers, to free clothing drives, to campaigns for community control of schools, community control of police, and campaigns to stop drugs, crime, and police murder and brutality in the various Black colonies across America. For these reasons, and others, the influence of the BPP spread far beyond its actual membership. Not only did the BPP programs teach self-reliance, but years later the government established similar programs such as free school lunch, expanded medicare and day care facilities, and liberalized court procedures for tenant takeovers of poorly maintained housing, partly if not primarily in order to snuff out the memory of previous similar BPP programs and the principle of self-reliance.

We know from the Scriptures that persons without authority will use the name of Jesus Christ to work what seem to be miracles. The Savior taught that as part of the Final Judgment many would say, "Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in Thy name have cast out devils? and in Thy name done many wonderful works?" (Matt. 7:22)...these pretenders were rejected by the Lord (see Matt. 7:23).

Not every manifestation or miracle comes from God or from mortal deception. The adversary has great powers to deceive, and he will use these to give his corrupted copy of the genuine miracles worked by the power of God. It is not desirable to say much about the powers of the evil one. It is sufficient for us to know that his power exists, and that we have been warned against it ... see Rev. 13:11–14; D&C 28:11; D&C 50:1–3

It's amazing how organizations begin w/great intentions, inspired by an opportunity to make a difference in some way and end up being hurtful.

Since I'm on a Shakespeare binge: The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves. Julius Caesar, Act I, scene 2

We've all seen it often. As you say, "organizations begin w/great intentions, inspired by an opportunity to make a difference in some way and end up being hurtful." I don't know why it happens, but I know how. We lose sight of the goal (or worse, we achieve the goal) and then arbitrarily define a new objective -- often a self-serving one. I've seen it in the women's movement, the unions, both political parties ... the only group that didn't fall victim was the yips. When it stopped being fun, we just freakin' quit.

QuoteI absolutely love your youngest response! I imagine she got quite a few hung jaws on that one. ;D

Nah, they didn't get it. But her father and I damned near wet our pants!

Title: Just one of many documented miracles
Post by: JANADELE on June 14, 2010, 08:58:40 PM
During an attempted military coup to overthrow the government of Philippine president Corazon Aquino in December 1989  many persons were killed in nearly a week of heavy fighting between rebel and loyal government troops. A principal site of this fighting was Camp Aguinaldo, which adjoins The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Temple in Manila.

During the first day of the attempted coup, gunfire and bombing could be heard from our Temple. That night the road in front of the Temple was occupied by rebel armored vehicles, trucks, and many soldiers. With the coming of daylight on Saturday, these rebel forces exchanged gunfire with the loyal government troops in Camp Aguinaldo. Opposing aircraft fired rockets and dropped bombs.

At about 3:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon, the rebel soldiers breached the gate of the Temple and occupied our Temple grounds. At this time we had five Philippine employees there: three security men and two custodians. Our Temple president, Floyd H. Hogan, instructed them by phone not to resist the soldiers entering the Temple grounds or the Temple annex, which housed auxiliary facilities like name processing, but to secure the Temple and take cover there. The man in charge, Brother Espi, later wrote that he worked to develop a good relationship with the rebel soldiers to convince them that even though they wanted to get access to the Temple, "because of the sacred nature of the Temple, they should not try to enter."

Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning there were almost continuous exchanges of gunfire between the government troops in Camp Aguinaldo and the rebels around the camp, including those occupying our Temple grounds. Brother Espi later wrote: "We all thought that we are on our own but still asked our Heavenly Father to strengthen each one of us and to spare the Temple from being desecrated."

Others were praying too. In his later report, Area President George I. Cannon wrote: "The Sunday when the rebellion was going on was fast Sunday. Throughout the Philippines the members were praying and fasting for The temple, for the members, and for the missionaries."

Sunday morning a government helicopter gunship appeared and strafed the vicinity of the Temple, but retreated because of stiff resistance from the rebels' 50-caliber machine guns. About noon that day an air force plane dropped several bombs that hit the residence house near the Temple. Bomb fragments broke windows in the Temple annex.

Sunday evening Manila radio reported that the LDS Temple was in rebel hands but that a government force was moving in to drive them out. At that report, President Hogan, the Temple president and a retired colonel in the U.S. military, went into action himself. He made the dangerous walk from the Temple president's home to the assembling government troops. There he found that their commander had given the rebels one hour to surrender and planned to attack them at 11:00 p.m. His force included armored personnel carriers, heavy mortars, and at least 150 soldiers, who believed they outnumbered and could easily defeat the rebel force in the Temple annex. But their attack would obviously employ extensive heavy weapons and rifle fire and would cause great damage to the Temple facilities. President Hogan argued with the commanding officer that if he would only wait until daylight, the rebels might abandon the Temple grounds and no attack would be necessary. The commander insisted that he had to follow his orders, and President Hogan was not able to contact the general who had given the order to see if he would rescind it.

During this time I was the member of the Quorum of the Twelve whom the Philippines Area President contacted for help at headquarters. Thirty minutes before the 11:00 p.m. Manila deadline, Area President George I. Cannon phoned me to report that our Temple annex and grounds were the last remaining rebel stronghold in Manila and the army had massed artillery and troops for an assault at any moment. He said he had done all he could through the Philippine government and the American ambassador to discourage the attack, but without success. It was then 7:30 a.m. Sunday in Salt Lake City.

By a remarkable coincidence—one of those happenings that cannot be coincidental—the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles had scheduled an unusual meeting that Sunday morning. At 8:00 a.m., 3 December, just 30 minutes after I received that alarming report from Manila, the assembled First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve bowed in prayer and pleaded with the Lord to intervene to protect His house. Elder Marvin J. Ashton led our prayer. As we prayed, it was 11:00 p.m. Sunday evening in Manila, the exact hour appointed for the assault.

The attack never came. Twenty minutes after our prayer, President Cannon phoned Church headquarters to report that the military commander had unexpectedly decided against a night assault. Early the next morning, Philippine time, President Hogan phoned to say that the rebels had melted away during the night. I recorded in my journal, "I consider this a miracle of divine intervention no less impressive than many recorded in holy writ."

On Monday morning President Hogan inspected the Temple annex. It had shrapnel marks and many broken windows on the north side, but inside, none of its locked rooms had been entered. The Temple itself had not been entered and was not damaged. A total of six mortar or rocket shells had exploded inside the Temple grounds. From their trajectory, President Hogan concluded that some of these shells had to have passed between the spires of the Temple. The patron housing building under construction nearby had been hit by four or five rockets and had sustained extensive damage. The Manila Temple opened for normal sessions the next day.

A week later I received a letter from the Philippine ambassador to the United States, Emmanuel Pelaez, whom I had recently hosted at Church headquarters. His letter explained how he had worked behind the scenes, as soon as he learned that our Temple was threatened, to urge the Philippine military to "do everything possible" to spare this sacred building from damage. After the fighting was over, they had reported to him that "they were careful in their counter-shelling, so as not to cause damage" to the Temple. I concluded that the Lord had worked behind the scenes through these government servants to save His house.

When I was in the Philippines a few months later, I personally inspected the Temple and grounds and found that despite all of the shelling and exchanges of gunfire within a few feet of this sacred edifice, it was completely unmarked by any shell fire except for one bullet hole, apparently a single stray rifle shot, at the top of the highest steeple. As President and Sister Donald L. Hilton of the Philippines Manila Mission wrote in a letter sent to their missionaries, "an unseen army of angels assisted faithful Temple guards that the Temple was not desecrated."

Is U.S. Now On Slippery Slope To Tyranny?
By Thomas Sowell

When Adolf Hitler was building up the Nazi movement in the 1920s, leading up to his taking power in the 1930s, he deliberately sought to activate people who did not normally pay much attention to politics.
Such people were a valuable addition to his political base, since they were particularly susceptible to Hitler's rhetoric and had far less basis for questioning his assumptions or his conclusions.

"Useful idiots" was the term supposedly coined by V.I. Lenin to describe similarly unthinking supporters of his dictatorship in the Soviet Union.

Put differently, a democracy needs informed citizens if it is to thrive, or ultimately even survive.
In our times, American democracy is being dismantled, piece by piece, before our very eyes by the current administration in Washington, and few people seem to be concerned about it.

The president's poll numbers are going down because increasing numbers of people disagree with particular policies of his, but the damage being done to the fundamental structure of this nation goes far beyond particular counterproductive policies.

Just where in the Constitution of the United States does it say that a president has the authority to extract vast sums of money from a private enterprise and distribute it as he sees fit to whomever he deems worthy of compensation? Nowhere.

And yet that is precisely what is happening with a $20 billion fund to be provided by BP to compensate people harmed by their oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Many among the public and in the media may think that the issue is simply whether BP's oil spill has damaged many people, who ought to be compensated.

But our government is supposed to be "a government of laws and not of men."

If our laws and our institutions determine that BP ought to pay $20 billion — or $50 billion or $100 billion — then so be it.

But the Constitution says that private property is not to be confiscated by the government without "due process of law."

Technically, it has not been confiscated by Barack Obama, but that is a distinction without a difference.
With vastly expanded powers of government available at the discretion of politicians and bureaucrats, private individuals and organizations can be forced into accepting the imposition of powers that were never granted to the government by the Constitution.

If you believe that the end justifies the means, then you don't believe in constitutional government.
And, without constitutional government, freedom cannot endure. There will always be a "crisis" — which, as the president's chief of staff has said, cannot be allowed to "go to waste" as an opportunity to expand the government's power.

That power will of course not be confined to BP or to the particular period of crisis that gave rise to the use of that power, much less to the particular issues.

When Franklin D. Roosevelt arbitrarily took the United States off the gold standard, he cited a law passed during the First World War to prevent trading with the country's wartime enemies. But there was no war when FDR ended the gold standard's restrictions on the printing of money.

At about the same time, during the worldwide Great Depression, the German Reichstag passed a law "for the relief of the German people."

That law gave Hitler dictatorial powers that were used for things going far beyond the relief of the German people — indeed, powers that ultimately brought a rain of destruction down on the German people and on others.
If the agreement with BP was an isolated event, perhaps we might hope that it would not be a precedent. But there is nothing isolated about it.

The man appointed by President Obama to dispense BP's money as the administration sees fit, to whomever it sees fit, is only the latest in a long line of presidentially appointed "czars" controlling different parts of the economy, without even having to be confirmed by the Senate, as Cabinet members are.

Those who cannot see beyond the immediate events to the issues of arbitrary power — vs. the rule of law and the preservation of freedom — are the "useful idiots" of our time. But useful to whom?

There is no need to spin this FTW...it never said he was a Nazi.....this is a typical rhetoric response to a very well written opinion piece....try reading this without a closed, liberal mind, and try to see the big picture that as Sowell paints..... the immediate events to the issues of arbitrary power — vs. the rule of law and the preservation of freedom

First of all, it's not your thought, it's Thomas Sowell's and second of all his opinion means nothing. If Obama hadn't held their feet to the fire then his opinion would have been exactly the opposite.

Nothing positive comes from hate.

How about the freedom of those trying to earn a living which is directly related to the well being of their families who have been impacted by the spill. Who protects their feedom?

I never said it was MY thought....my thought IS, however, how much I enjoy Thomas Sowell and his opinions...secondly, it is typical for you to say that his opinion would be the exact opposite IF.....

I'm not saying that it is not a good thing that BP is going to put $20 Billion up for these folks, but that does not undermind the question that Sowell asked....."where in the Constitution of the United States does it say that a president has the authority to extract vast sums of money from a private enterprise and distribute it as he sees fit to whomever he deems worthy of compensation?"

Of course I would b/c I like to point out the obvious and of course he would have said the opposite. He's in business to sell advertising and make his sponor (and himself) richer. The readership wouldn't continue to read if he ever supported something a Democrat does.

So you're basing your hate on the fact that Dubby was scorned? How mature of you.

If the government didn't step in and hold BP, the corporation, financially responsible, wouldn't that serve the corp rather than the people? Wouldn't that be the antithesis of protecting the rights/freedoms of Americans? Shouldn't our government's main priority those negatively impacted and not the corporation?

My thought of the day has to do with this story...............

GM donates $41,000 to lawmakers' pet projects

Now, the people of this country GAVE GM the money to keep from going bankrupt........and these bitches have the freakin GALL to 'give' some of this money to "their favorite" charity?

it kind of goes with the first lady taking a NICE vacations to Spain on the taxpayers dollar, when we have nearly 10% unemployed right now?.............I mean wtf?....................is it THAT important that she HAD to go to Spain?...and to stay in a five-star hotel on the chic Costa del Sol in southern Spain with 40 of her 'closest friends,'"?....wth?  sure it may very well be a "private" trip....but, her being on a plane that is labeled as "Air Force Two"...it operates at a Department of Defense reimbursement rate of $11,351 per hour.

So a 6.5 hour flight to Spain would run $73,781.50.....double for the round trip....this is NOT including the Secret Service expenses....

during times of hardship like we are currently under, it would seem like the WISE thing to do, is that our POTUS, set examples of restraint and lead by example.....no body put a gun to anyones head and made them take this job....if we had a booming economy, maybe this would not seem like a big deal....but we don't have that luxury right now...

my point to posting this "thought of the day".....is just that common sense is GONE right now in our leadership.....and we have got to bring back that common sense if we EVER expect to have prosperous times again in this country....just MY thoughts.. ;)

Texas is a lot closer to DC than Spain and Bush's ranch didn't cost us a dime in lodging.  It does seem a little hypocritical to ask us to conserve and then go on an extravagant vacation like that any way you look at it so quit excusing it.  That do as I say and not as I do routine is getting a little old IMHO.  If they are asking all of us to conserve they, the Obama's should be too.  After all it is our money they are spending.  If the money isn't there for us why should it be there for them?

Not only what HH said but 2 people is a lot different than 40.

Are you naive enough to think that they didn't have an entourage of secret service and assistants?

QuoteGeorge W. Bush is today making his final visit to Camp David as president.

He will likely miss the place: According to CBS News White House Correspondent Mark Knoller, today's trip marks Mr. Bush's 149th visit to the presidential retreat. The planned three-day stay, during which the president is being joined by family and former and current aides, will bring his total time spent at Camp David to all or part of 487 days.

Yes, that's 487 days. And Camp David is not even where the president has spent the most time when not at the White House: Knoller reports that Mr. Bush has made 77 visits to his ranch in Crawford during his presidency, and spent all or part of 490 days there

Total: 977 days

That's more than 2 1/2 years on vacation. This figure doesn't count the amount of time spent on vacations away from these two places. That's a lot of vacation time, even considering two terms.

She says in a snotty way, "Well, Texas is a lot closer than Spain."  Well, ain't that precious.

Let's see Washington DC to Spain is 8386 miles round trip.  Washington DC  to Texas is 2800 miles round trip.  Now let's multiply 2800 miles times the 77 trips in the 747 Air Force #1, which cost more, that George W. his wife and 2 kids took to Texas is 215,600 miles.  Divided by 4 people equals 53,900 miles for each person.

Now let's take 8,386 miles in a smaller jet, divided by 40 friends, that equals 8,386 miles for each person.  Look like a good deal.   And did you know the President's wife has no choice how she travels.  The Secret Service decides how she travels and how many agents go on that trip.

Also about all of the unemployment, 10% so they say, caused by the greedy Republican Party taking care of the rich and the corporations they own.

Obama is employed and he has done quite well, in money, in the books he has written and sold.  So why in hell can his wife take the kids and some friends on a trip.  I know if I ever won the lottery, I would gather some of my friends and we would go take a nice cruise, eventho we're almost in a Republican Depression.  You would not be on my trip.  You could stay home and cry for some more tax cuts for the Super Rich.

215,000 miles for Texas trips, by George W. & family         4 people  =  53,900 miles per person

8,386 miles for Spain trip and 40 people and Mrs, Obama's  43 people = 195 miles per person

The truth of the matter is that if you held the previous president to the same standard, he'd fail miserably.

It's called hipocrisy. The purpose Dubby serves now is to point out just how far your hipocrisy goes.

IT is my DAMN business, they work for me, and you and ALL people who pay taxes....Listen, I don't give a crap what they do on their own dime....but, they need to realize that all of America has their eyes on them, and taking a "lavish" and expensive vacation during a 10% unemployment is stupid, and the polls that Sandy is talking about backs up this statement, his numbers are down near W's...below 40% who support him......I think it is his arrogance, that I personally don't like....and this was about as arrogant as it gets......poor little Michelle could have took the girls alot of places here in the states and there would not have been a word mentioned about it.

I think he is a huge, liberal with a too strong of Socialistic agenda.....that is just the way many of us see him....and PLEASE, it has not ONE thing to do with his skin color, so PLEASE, do not accuse me of being a racist....it would not have liked Hillary much either.....as a mater of fact, I wish there would be ONE Democrat who would run that had SOME, conservative values, such as keeping the size of Government down, and LESS spending......I tell you, Obama makes me miss Bill Clinton....at least Clinton, along with Newt, made for a half way decent ran government....

Your so full of Bullshit, your teeth are brown.  The racists bit, you're still under a cloud with me, on Obama.

All the wasted prayers.  You and I know they don't work and never have, it for the sheeple to calm them and keep they in shame and servitude to their preachers and anyone else that uses God for their own purpose.

Name one body part that has been replaced by prayer.  Why all of those poor cripple children I see every week, are never healed by prayer.  I know why, all of the Republican leader push prayer, it doesn't cost them any money.  The cheap ass bastards.  They will use anything to keep the sheeple under their wing "Right Wing?"  and do anything to remain in power.

All of the crimes you have accursed Obama, are absolutely a lousy statement of your abuse of the President of the United States.  That man has not done one thing to you personally.  He has not hurt the United States  and most certainly has not committed any crime.

If he wasn't the President, he could sue your balls off for slander.  But then, why would he sue you.  You probably don't have much money in the bank and the house you live in, is owned by the bank and your car or cars are not worth much.  In other words, you're sue proof.  You can't get blood out of a turnip or a tightass Republican.  Isn't it amazing that I can't say a damn thing about you vacation, but you can condem the President wife vacation.  Likis said, just pure bullshit.

But I got to say one thing about you.  You sure write checks your ass can't cash.

:bsflag: talk about bullshit, dude you are the epitome of bullshit!!...you have me laughin my butt off right now... :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Troll you can say ALL your little heart contends about me and my vacations.....you can call me whatever you want....and YOU do. ;)

are you trying to tell me that Obama does not believe in PRAYER? :preach: .. :spooked: .. WOW!! not even to his Muslim God?.. :spooked: :spooked: ...double WOW!!

Name ONE crime I said that Obama committed..... ........go ahead and I will wait...... :nono:

:piano: do, do, do, do, do do do......do, do, do, do, do do do.....do, do, do, do, do do do..... :piano:

like I said, we live in a free country to say what we want... .....and I can honestly say, with ALL  my heart....I think that this POTUS is BAD for the Country.....and I think he is arrogant and pompous....and his wife is too, or she would NOT have dashed off to Spain, with 40 friends and lived like a queen, while 10% of here employers are without work and losing homes and looking for their next meal......

now, another question for you that you probably won't answer........name ONE Check that my ass can't cash....... :piano: do, do, do, do, do do do......do, do, do, do, do do do.....do, do, do, do, do do do..... :piano:

I can say ONE thing about you Troll.....you always make me laugh....

YES, I do condemn Obama on almost everything, because I do not trust him, I think he is the most pompous, most arrogant, and must crooked president we have had in decades...I do not like him.....and I probable will NEVER like him....

I taking the that "must" means "most" crooked.  In my book crooked means a criminal act., a crime.

"arrogant"  is that like uppity "N" word.

"pompous" is that like uppity "N" word.

I did have to laugh when I seen you didn't call him uneducated or stupid.  But then again you did vote for George W. twice and John McCain and Sara Palin.  And you would say "What ever".  :rotfl: :rotfl:

But I got to say one thing.  From the first post I read of yours, I sure could see your were a  FRIGGING CLOWN :jester: (don't change, your the laugh :rotfl: in my life)  Religious Right wingnut.  Your are a joke.  :pink: :pink:  :pink:

I'll tell you, when my friend come over, I take them into my computer room and bring up the Unknown Zone and let them read your posts.

It just like going to a Comedy club in Carmel.  They absolutely laugh off their ass.  They will say who in hell it that nut.  Or, I can't believe anyone it that nuts.  When I tell them that you're a electrical engineer and your only 50 years old, they just shake their heads and say that a real shame.  One old friend said, he hasn't been weened yet, hell he's probably still on the tit.

One more thing, old George W. and his band of thieves surly have screwed you real good.  I'll bet you under water :ouch:.  You owe more on your house that it worth or it's worth less less than what you paid for it and it going to take years and years, if ever to be worth what you paid for it. :dam:

Oh the really kills me :rotfl: :rotfl:  :rotfl:  :rotfl:  Damn I can't catch my breath.  Stop you killing me.  God surly loves these Republican Party thieves.  Did you write a thank you note to George W. for deregulating the banks and stockmarket.

Well kid, if I am as Lucky as I have been over the years.  I will live fairly good until that time comes to go.  Everything I have (rent) in paid for in full.  Don't owe a dime.  I wish the interest rate on my bank accounts were higher.  I can live a long, long time on my saving alone.  Not like the kids of today.  Two check from being homeless.  But you, your going to see some really bad shit, if your let the Republican Party and the Super Rick and the corporations run this county.  Your going to be 65 to 70 years old with no Social Security, Medicare and a 401K that doesn't have any thing in it or stolen by the Stock Marketeers.

Why, because the Republican Party and the Super Rich doesn't want the middle to have a safety net.  They want a bunch of blank eyed, starving slave to rule.  Fat slave fight back.

Don't lose any sleep over this, just keep me laughing.  :rotfl: :rotfl:  :rotfl:  :rotfl:

Well you and your old fart buddies keep on laughin.....THAT is why I stick around....because I know all too well, that you and your buddies are like the proverbial frog in a pot of water, with the water slowly coming to a boil.......you will just sit there until it is too late, your dinner.

THAT is what the Obama followers remind me off.....laughing it up at the party, until you realize that YOU ARE the party....and everything comes crashing in on you.....

the good news Troll, is that there is a great chance that the republicans WILL win back control of the house, and possibly the senate, and can stop this out of control spending train wreck we are on....and turn things around so that maybe, some day, I too, can retire off of MY hard work, based upon MY investments...and NOT depend on some shirt and ties spittin out a measly paycheck for me to live on, and tell me WHAT docs I can see, and what food I can eat, and where to set my thermostat, a what car I can drive, and when I can travel......our freedoms is slowly being takin away, and you just keep laughin it up....

one of these days, we will have that tenderloin sandwich you promised me, and you can tell me then, how much I was right.....

On a much more serious note, with all kidding aside.... despite the dems and despite the repubs....I hope that we get a real grip on things real soon....and IF the dems really have a better way, they better start convincing Americans their way is going to work....because right now, things are getting worse....we have lost several thousand jobs since the stimulus bill.........and the economy is on the verge of taking another swing for the worse.....we need the bickering to stop....and real solutions put in place.

But, I do disagree with what the poster posted.  I disagree 100% about what he says about the Republican Party is going to save this country.  After they destroyed it with their greed and lust for power at any cost to the people of America.  These Republican Party leaders have a really easy and over paid jobs.  Their are doing nothing, but causing trouble for America and pain for the unemployed.

I also disagree with the mean and untrue things he says about the President of the United State of America.

So therefore, I choose to attack the poster and the main thing is, it none of you business. :stirthepot:

But you still work under that illusion of "If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, you baffle them with bull shit and snow them with things from Fox News or some Republican think tank or blog.

Henry, I noticed that you said, "I not going to have to have some shirt and tie tell what doctor I can see.  Well, I hope your are able to put a lot of money back, after all of expenses of that family of your and your life style.  Your going to need it.   You do realize that you have less than 15 years, just, 15 short years to build up all that big nest egg your going to need to retire.  You going to put all of your money in the stock market.  Good luck if it is a Republican stock trader.

Some friends of ours, some 40 years back, kid got a abscess in the middle of her brain.  She laid in Critical care for 8 weeks at St. Johns.

The couple Jack and Carol kept tract of the medical bills up to  $200,000 then they gave up on it.  They ask the head nurse why they had not said anything to them about the medical cost.  She said, "Now this is not me, but accounting.  They think when people who work at the factory, Ford.  Any bill over $50,000 mean bankruptcy."

All that money and investments can go right down the medical hole on one big sickness.  A broken leg (crack) today, will cost you over $1,500 alone.  Anything with the brain, bankruptcy.

Tonight I want you to set down and figure just how much you think you need to retire.  Figure how much you have to put back in cash, in savings and secure investments not just a gamble.  Each week and guess how long your going to live, according to your healt and genes.  I bet it scares you.  It did me.  When lake time is over and you haven't looked me up and tried to kill me.  You still might get that Tenderloin and a beer.  You and your wife at post 212.

that's okay me, I understand he has a hard time with the fact that the liberal's are screwing things up, and he continues to blame bush....but, the facts are coming out now...it has been since 2006, since the republicans lost control of things, and nearly two years since Obama started with his agenda, and nothing but bad news is coming out of Washington.....every day, the more bad news about the economy, the war, immigration, and on and on....and they have no one to blame but themselves.....and yet they continue to say things like the republicans are not playing fair, and Bush left things in worse mess than they thought so it is going to take longer than expected....and yet they continue to grow our deficit at a record rate....passing a hc bill that the vast majority is against.....

My attitude is to stick to my guns, and things I know that is right....and roll with the punches and have fun.....I know deep inside of ol troll is a great guy....and he and I WILL have a tenderloin together and drink a cold one someday....and will just agree to disagree.  ;)

I don't know WHERE you are getting your information from, but my lifestyle is about as conservative as they come.....I live in a nice, but modest ranch home...I have three vehicles, and my newest is a 2003....the one I drive has 225,000 plus miles on it and it looks like death...but, it runs like the dickens....

We buy clothes for the kids when they are on sale, they don't get fancy designer stuff....we don't take vacations, but rarely.....we have been scraping and saving for a trip to florida, MAYBE this fall, but not until I got the green stuff in hand to pay for it.....I have a retirement, and a profit sharing program....and I don't expect to retire until I hit the 70's, God willing.

I don't plan on putting much money into the stock market, but if I do, I will choose on what is best for me and my family, I do not plan on any money being there for me by the gov.....and I don't expect or want the gov to give me anything other than what I have contributed.....I just want, to make the best of MY situation by MY self...without the gov telling me I have to do this or HAVE to do that.

I want a conservative approach to my country's interest...not a liberal, socialistic approach....and I am going to fight, scratching and clawing, win or lose....that is just the way I am....until the opposing party proves to me that they CAN make things better for us as a country THAT is the way I will fight...it is that simple.

Your a big boy and you can do anything you want with your money.  You know what GM did to their workers and your employer can do it to you.  As far as your life style, I know having 5 kid to raise and feed and educate, your plate is sure damn full.

But, I live on a pension, Social Security, Medicare and Ford's medicine plan and dental plan and eye glasses plan and hearing plan and lawyer plan.  And I haven't been pressure by the government at all.  But the insurance plans, every day, a change in benifits and copays, question on everthing, telling you what drugs you can have.  Plus the benifits go down every day.  The government sure hasn't been my enemy, but the insurance companies sure have.  And those white shirt and tie SOB's sure are heartless.

So Henry, do what your doing, but please promise one thing.  If you get down and out and with no money or anyone to care.  Don't ask the Government for help or aid.  Just die and get out of the way.

My thought of the day has nothing to do with politics or religion.  Last night, I got to witness one of the greatest bands of all time perform.  There is NO duplication or reasonable facsimile of the sounds that are produced by Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Timothy B. Schmit and Joe Walsh.  I was awestruck when they opened the night with "Seven Bridges Road".  Those vocals combined together...ARE...the Eagles.  I had seen these guys back in 1980, when the bickering was at it's peak, right before the breakup...it was obvious then, that their hearts was not in the proper place to perform.  Last night, every song was performed with passion.  You can see the pride that all of them had while the sung and played.  They perfomed from 8:15 to 11:30, with a 20 minute break.  They mixed old with new perfectly and ended it all with a powerful version of "Desperado"....Henley sung it as if it was his last time to do so....They added some small talk to the crowd on occassions, and threw in a little humor from time to time....My wife and I, along with my son and his girlfriend and her parents, all truly enjoyed the evening.  In this day and time, the way prices are on such events, normally leaves you feeling ripped off. It was clearly not the case with this fantastic few hours I was able to spend, having one of best times I have had in a long time.

Glad you got to see them Hank! My wife and I saw them last year at Conseco. They were one of the very few bands who know how to get the sound right for Conseco. And my wife an I came away from that show with the very same experience you relate here. It was a great time and is a great band with a TON of history behind them. They sounded great back in the day and they sound just as good today. Glad you enjoyed yourselves!  8)
