I just finished authoring my appeal and putting together supporting documentation. The appeal is 10 pages long, and the supporting documentation is 3 times that. I'mma spank me some corporate A$$!  :icon_twisted: :icon_evil:

I hated the unemployment office!  When I had it you had to go there in person ALL the time.  A lot of work for $16 a week!

I would let them keep their dingleberries, just tell everyone they have them. That will be an embarrassment in itself.

Update on my former student

Wow.  A diagnosis of Schizophrenia.  Now that I'm reading about it in children, the signs were almost all there.  So much for early intervention.  He will not be allowed back in school until an evaluation is done on him this summer to see if the medication and therapy are working.  If they aren't, he will go live in a group home.

I'm not sure how I feel about all of this.  Thought you'd want an update though.

Don't take this wrong Kim, but how does it make people feel who assume that it's the parents, or that the kid just is acting out, and then find out that there was a more major underlying cause, and perhaps. the parents just didn't know how to deal with it.  Remember, this child was in therapy, and obviously that doctor/counselor couldn't diagnose the condition.

I understand what you are saying.  I have always thought that there was more to him than just childhood depression.  As his teacher I can think things but cannot legally say them in meetings.  You know how people get all bent out of shape when ADHD gets suggested by the teacher?  Imagine suggesting a serious mental disorder.  It doesn't happen because that is not my area of expertise.  My suggesting of a deeper mental issue would be like the doctor telling you that your child has phonics problems and that is why they can't read.  It is not their area of expertise!

Reading up on childhood schizophrenia, I have learned a few things.  One, if a child is diagnosed or shows signs before the age of 10, then they are likely predisposed and have some sort of neurological defect to begin with.  These children are more serious than the adult version.  And two, it is likely that his environment (home, school, peers) triggered his "meltdown" for lack of a better word.  The verbal abuse he received from his father probably started this long road 3 to 5 years ago.  Mom did the best she could with the exception of not getting him full time treatment when she had the chance.  I'm sure his other doctors and professionals would have come up with the same conclusion had he gone to therapy consistently.  He has been in the mental hospital since Wednesday night and today they gave him his diagnosis - 5 days later with him in observation 24hrs a day.  It is hard to blame his other doctors for not being able to diagnose him when he was inconsistent in coming to appointments.  That is out of his hands and is directly the responsibility of his mom.

I love his mom and want to make sure that she is doing okay with all of this.  I also worry about the youngest.  He is 11 and I have him this week in the class I'm subbing in.  I had him last year.  He is strong, funny, social, well rounded, etc... but that doesn't mean that he won't be effected by this.  He is going to need help too but in other ways.

It's shocking they didn't diagnose it sooner.  :spooked: My Mom has it, and it's is really obvious.  :spooked: She sees things that aren't there, she hears voices in her head, she talks to herself, she's completely paranoid, and she use to get violent. Those are very obvious symptoms. I can't believe nobody even suspected that. I'm glad they figured it out, and hopefully they can medicate him to the point, that can have some decent quality of life. Unfortunately, it is an incurable, and progressive mental disease.

Those are some of the symptoms that can be involved (especially in adults) but not all.  In kids it is hard to tell whether or not an "imaginary friend" is just that or if they really think someone is there.   The biggest symptoms that I saw matching was his inability to make or keep friends - he used to lash out at anyone trying to be nice to him, or when he was paranoid that people were out to get him or that they were talking about him.  We get the talking about each other thing constantly.  I knew that kids weren't, but there was no convincing him.  I had no idea that those were symptoms.
