I got a letter from a collection agency where they have turned a hospital bill of mine over. It's a bill that I paid off in June when we refinanced our house. I called them at that time and asked for the balance, paid that amount, and haven't heard anything until I got that letter. I called when I got the letter and the little witch was crappy with me and told me that I owed an additional $1900..    I told her she was wrong and told her about me paying it off with a balance THEY gave me. She told me that even though THEIR employee MIGHT have told me the wrong balance, I'm still responsible to pay it. How the heck do I fight them when its probably gonna be my word against theirs? She's sending me itemized bills and payment history. I'm looking for my copies. 5 days before Christmas and they want money....Merry frickin' HoHO!

You're getting the copies. Maybe they've made a mistake. If that's the case then you'll have proof of your payment to them. Typically any collections calls are recorded in your account record, so hopefully they have a record of your call to receive the pay off amount. Hindsight being 20/20, I think you should have asked for the balance in writing. Although, generally they forward the pay off info anyway. I'm crossing my fingers that it's a mistake and easily fixed. I'm sorry that you have this kind of stress right before Christmas. Jerks!

She said they have a record of me calling in in January and talking to someone about setting up payments on it, but they don't have a record of me calling in for the balance. Go figure! The check was an odd amount, meaning so many dollars, so much cents. I asked her where I would have gotten that figure from if I hadn't called in. Thats when she told me that their employee MAY have given me the wrong info.
