I think both of you are very correct on your views. I would really like to see more thorough background checks done for mental illness when people apply for guns but wonder if it would violate HIPPA laws.

I really don't think we are very far apart at all on this issue. We have just expressed it in different terms. He may well have gotten the gun illegally, we shall see. We can't pass any laws to stop that. But a system that checks more thoroughly and allows accurate communications among all departments involved would go a long way to at least begin to cut back on these incidents. Dylann Roof's drug use admission never made it into the background check database - partially because of human error - partially because disparate systems don't communicate.

But it seems as if the NRA has taken a hardline stance against background checks and I think that is entirely wrong. They should push background checks as a means to protect the right of every law-abiding, responsible citizen to own a gun. What does a law-abiding, responsible citizen fear from a background check?

If the media is to be believed, a report I saw a little bit ago said he had indeed purchased the firearm himself "legally".

Yet another epic, systemic failure of the laws already in place. Why, for the exact reasons you stated; failure to communicate. . .

So law enforcement fails and once again the masses will call for stronger firearm legislation. Why do we constantly do this when it is blatantly apparent the laws we already have in place are not being adequately enforced?

One problem is that people who want guns for whatever reasons find a way. My boss at one time was a high level person with a reputation :lipsrsealed2:. He asked me one day to sign a form indicating that I wanted to buy some kind of gun. Said he was a collector and too many questions would be asked of him.  Against my better judgment I signed. Found out later that he asked at least one other person in the office to do the same. (Wonder what kind of gun I bought?)

According to documents, his ex wife had gotten rid of the guns that he bought legally and didn't know if he had any or not. So did he get this gun legally or illegally?

The gun Houser used, a Hi-Point .40-caliber semiautomatic pistol, was legally purchased in February 2014 from a shop in Phenix City, Alabama, Craft said, citing the the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Drew Griffin, a senior investigative correspondent for CNN, said it appears Houser was cleared to buy the gun because he didn't have any convictions for serious crimes.

"He just didn't show up on any of the instant background checks," Griffin said.

Why on earth would you want to kill an old lion.  You bait him up and stand back and shoot him with a bow and arrow.  Then you follow him for 40 hours and then kill him with a gun. :puke:  I think these animal rights groups should picket his office and drive him out of business so he won't have the money to kill some old lion.  What a HERO.  :knife:   :behead:
