Unfortunatly, I too have a few memories I wish I could get rid of, but they are forever embedded in my head.  I would have a very rough time serving as an EMT, fireman or a cop.

I am NOT getting slower as I age. It's just that I have more information to process!

Older Brains Slow Due to Greater Experience, Rather Than Cognitive Decline

...new research in Topics in Cognitive Science argues that older brains may take longer to process ever increasing amounts of knowledge, and this has often been misidentified as declining capacity.

Instead of finding evidence of decline, the team discovered that most standard cognitive measures are flawed, confusing increased knowledge for declining capacity.

...slower, not because its processing capacity had declined, but because increased "experience" had caused the computer's database to grow, giving it more data to process, and that processing takes time.

I had seriously wondered that same thing because there is so much more crammed in there it only makes sense some would be stored far back in the archives.  I think if you pictured the brain with little file cabinets some people would have neatly arranged ones all proper and in place and, even though I hate to admit it, some would be like mine and have papers hanging out and stacked on top totally disorganized.  I usually know right where to go if I need something important and can clear my mind and think about it for a minute though.  ;)

My wife and I bit the bullet and decided to go straight to the grocery store after work. Despite the raging winds and having to park out where Jeebus lost his sandals, we got through it and are now sitting at home awaiting dinner to come out of the oven.

The only things I intend to go outside for until 0 dark thirty Monday morning, is to snow-blow and shovel, and let the pooch out to make ice turds and yellow snow.

   The question of the year!!!!??

We are always hearing about how Social Security is going to run out of money.

How come we never hear about Welfare running out of money?

What's interesting, the first group "worked for" their money... the second didn't!!

Arguing with Christians is like playing chess with a pigeon.  No matter how good I am at chess, the pigeon is just going to knock over the pieces, shit on the board and strut around like it's victorious.

The truth is slow, but relentless. Over time it becomes irresistible.

The Ground Rat has declared another 6 weeks of old man winter's relentless grasp upon the collective throats of the bulk of this nation, and my weather radio, in all it's neon Smurf Blue splendor, is flashing a winter storm warning message across its screen as some sort of divine validation of that vermin's message.

Even my body seems to be in full agreement with him, as I continue to battle the respiratory portion of the H1N1 virus old man winter brought my way; as a special reminder of the creeping age his partner, mother nature, is forcing upon me. Little do they both know that I do so enjoy the winter season, the snow, the frigid temperatures that force us all to huddle up inside our respective domiciles, and bundle up when life demands we do otherwise. Sure, I get frustrated when my tools to deal with the snow break down, but on the whole I wouldn't wish the winter season away; even if it appears I will have to shovel by hand for the balance of the season. It's the struggle of life that we as a species must endure, no matter what new method or means of dealing with those struggles we come up with, life will find a way to challenge us from another angle. So I just figure its best to just do what you need to to get through it, and get on with the living.

It was just one of those moments that presented me with an irony, courtesy of the big 3; Life, Old Man Winter, and Mother Nature. My Little Pup had to go outside, and I had to get up out of my chair, and from beneath the blanket that had been keeping me warm and toasty, to let him outside to do his business. He was quite insistent about it, so there was no question surrounding what it was I had to do.

So, I bundled my infirm body up, slipped on a pair of boots, and out the door we went.

It was my first time outdoors since last Friday, when I ventured out to spend a king's ransom on medical advice and a prescription with which to deal with what presently ails me. The air was crisp and the sun glistened off the surface of the snow in a vain attempt to blind me. But alas, my adaptive lenses made quick work of that, and let me breath a deep breath of fresh winter air in peace; although the exhalation process was another matter entirely.

My old friends the gravel brothers have taken up residence in my lungs, and they began to voice their disapproval of my actions in no uncertain terms. Pup was busy sniffing the snow for his favorite spots while I endured the coughing jag and phlegm balls the Gravel Brothers were slinging at me. After a couple of minutes, things quieted down and I was about to tell the pup to shorten the timeline of his jaunt, when out of the corner of my eye I caught sight of something, and my ears told me it was the ruffle of the feathers of a bird.

I turned my head expecting to see the typical murder of crows that frequent the area, but this bird seemed smaller than they do. The glare of the sun was preventing me from obtaining the detail necessary to identify this winged wonder, and it took flight as soon as I turned my head. I followed it along the short path it took, which brought it alongside 5 more of its kind, and when it landed I was taken aback at what it was I was seeing.

There, within the branches of the plumb tree I had planted with my own two hands a few years ago, perched 6 Robins. Young ones, with the mottled breasts, but Robins they were, and six of them at that.

Now, given that my weather radio, the ground rat, mother nature, old man winter, and my own damn body are all telling me it is winter, and not just winter, but a winter that has no intention what-so-ever of reducing its grip upon us anytime soon, I have to wonder just what to believe?

For me the choice was easy; the Robins. Hope springs eternal. Besides, pup was done and he was standing right next to me, looking up at me, and yapping his, "Dad, I'm done now. Lets go back in", message.

Saw the resident Madison County Sheriff make a number of trips this afternoon, to pick up children at the drop off point here in the subdivision, and provide them rides to their homes.

Of course the first one was his kid, but he came back and loaded the car up with others several times. Until there were no more.

Some might call that a waste of taxpayer money and gas, but I'd call it excellent community outreach; not to mention being one outstanding neighbor.
