The leader of the nation's largest veterans organization says he is "deeply disappointed and concerned" after a meeting with President Obama today to discuss a proposal to force private insurance companies to pay for the treatment of military veterans who have suffered service-connected disabilities and injuries. The Obama administration recently revealed a plan to require private insurance carriers to reimburse the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) in such cases.

Why would the American Legion oppose this?  It is not as if they are not going to receive coverage.

They oppose it because Obama's plan is going to effect the veterans....

Because Veteran Affairs was set up to take care of our military veterans. The insurance mafia will find ways to not pay or pay for long on these claims. We have always taken care of our veterans disabilities and wounds. Think HMO when you think about the insurance companies handling these claims.  It is a slap in the faces of the military. I do have one question though. If they do this will the President and his staff then get treatment at regular hospitals, under the rules of Insurance companies and not at the military bases??

How?

What's interesting to me is how some (Republicans particularly) are all about privatization when it suits them, but against going to the private sector to recuperate funds in this instance.  As Kimmi pointed out, and unless I missed something, this won't affect the veterans nor will it affect their coverage.

this does AFFECT the private sector.. Obama is trying to require private insurance carriers to reimburse the Department of Veterans Affairs.....so it can pay for his pet projects....this is the ONE thing that our constitution is supposed to do....is provide a Military...and along with that they should be taking care of them....our taxpayers put them in harms way.....by God, those in Washington make sure THEY are covered under the taxpayers dollar...

I may need to work on my grammer, but you need to get a clue....simply because I am not a veteran has nothing to do with my respect for them.....and I have nothing but gratitude to ALL those in the military.....

Being a veteran only does not qualify you to have an opinion when the pres is screwing up. I have generations of veterans in my family since the civil war and some that did not come home. If we don't take care of our veterans, what does that say about us? I don't even want to think about it. Whereas the pres has only been in office for a little while I think we should give him room. But, when he is tragically wrong and what he plans affects us all then I think we have a right, no a a responsibility to speak up. JMO

Really?  Because living near several military bases gives me a little more "headline news" in these areas and it seems to me we do a piss poor job of taking care of veterans.

If they were to be treated by the best we have, there would not be VA hospitals because they would be shipped to the best facilities we have as a country.  The only way they can be treated by the doctors in the finest hospitals is by having private insurance take care of them.

What world do you live in??
Can they afford this insurance for this fine and the best treatment.
If they can't afford insurance then who will treat them??
Are the insurance cos going to claim these are prior injuries or illnesses and not pay on them, or just a part of what it costs. Don't think for a minute the ins cos won't waffle on this if they can. They will.

So, what is your part of the country? I've lived on the east and west coast and I interact with veterans frequently. So maybe they should be advised to move to your city if they want help. How do you explain the high number of homeless veterans who are disabled mentally and/or physically and can't work? They all deserve much better treatment.

I don't believe it said anywhere that they would be forced to pay for insurance.  I mean the military is a great example of a working welfare system right?  They work for the country and get things like health care for free.  As long as they are in the military or retired from the military, they don't have to worry about being uninsured.

My beef is the lack of medical care they receive with their military benefits.  Wasn't there just a huge investigation into the country's military hospitals in the past year?  Why are we not sending these injured men to places like Johns Hopkins, Duke, UCLA?  They deserve the best care.  If using private insurance will give them this kind of treatment rather than the meat hacking facilities they are used to, then I'm all for it.

and THAT is the kind of treatment we ALL will have IF we let the government health care blossom... ;)

This paragraph makes a valid point against Obama's proposal.
QuoteCommander Rehbein reiterated points made last week in testimony to both House and Senate Veterans' Affairs Committees. It was stated then that The American Legion believes that the reimbursement plan would be inconsistent with the mandate that VA treat service-connected injuries and disabilities given that the United States government sends members of the armed forces into harm's way, and not private insurance companies. The proposed requirement for these companies to reimburse the VA would not only be unfair, says the Legion, but would have an adverse impact on service-connected disabled veterans and their families. The Legion argues that, depending on the severity of the medical conditions involved, maximum insurance coverage limits could be reached through treatment of the veteran's condition alone. That would leave the rest of the family without health care benefits. The Legion also points out that many health insurance companies require deductibles to be paid before any benefits are covered. Additionally, the Legion is concerned that private insurance premiums would be elevated to cover service-connected disabled veterans and their families, especially if the veterans are self-employed or employed in small businesses unable to negotiate more favorable across-the-board insurance policy pricing. The American Legion also believes that some employers, especially small businesses, would be reluctant to hire veterans with service-connected disabilities due to the negative impact their employment might have on obtaining and financing company health care benefits.
What I would actually rather see, but I know it's not going to happen, is the government pay for care for Veterans in the private sector.  I have never really had a very high opinion of Military doctors or hospitals because they have always been the pits but Obama's proposal is not right any way you look at it.

No it isn't. Unless one considers the possibilities it leaves the door open for criticism surrounding that failure.

I actually admire the fact that the new POTUS is performing due diligence in considering many options before making a decision on the path moving forward.

As with the stimulus bill, they just assume he thought it up overnight and pushed it through. Most forget that once he was elected he went right to work on it, 60 days or so before he even went onto the payroll!

The problem is that most of his critics are preconditioned by the Chimp method of having a brain fart and running with it before it is given any consideration. So, they create things like this article and end up looking like chicken little!

I guess they could be keeping all of their planning/ idea sessions a secret from the public like 99% of all politicians do.  I guess you would be better with that or would he then be an ass for not sharing enough with the average joe?

At this point I am more down on Congress than I am Obama but this idea was his so of course it would appear that I am down on him.  Congress is not making his job easy by any means, in fact, they are making it more difficult. Congress would like nothing more than to keep things they are putting in those bills they are having him sign secret, even from him.

Tear the wheels off the "Down With Obama" bandwagon!

Somebody HAS to lead this country out of the morass it's fallen into; the populace has charged Obama with the job. Let's hope he is up to the challenge. Some of his ideas will pan out and some won't. But we can't trust our vaunted legislators to get us out of this mess -- they've proven too many times that they're only interested in their own little agendas. Barack has the reins firmly in hand; it's his chance to be a statesman, not a politician.

In my opinion, he blew his PERFECT opportunity to show his statesmanship, if he would have rejected the porkulus bill........his very own words while campaigning was that he was NOT going to allow bills loaded with pork....and the very first bill he gets is loaded and he RUSHED it through....

had he put the brakes on that bill and told congress to get 'even SOME of the pork out' he would have gotten some respect by millions of Americans...I know I WOULD have greatly admired THAT move....

but he did not.....

You all realize that he's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. Right?

Had he stopped Porkie 1 and the country/economy collapsed, the same people trashing him now would be trashing him then.

He did the right thing, acted in the best interests of the country in his best judgment, and the critics can go screw the pooch. I am sure he has done what he feels to be truly the right thing to this point.

He knows better than the rest of us that his every action is not just under the short sighted microscopes of the citizens of this country, but the long-sighted microscope of history as well. He is well aware of the real and historic ramifications of his every move and has acknowledged it many times.

I believe it to be a very good thing, because it will help keep him honest and his decisions true to the greater good of the American people and this country; despite the temptation that may come with holding a position of such power and responsibility.

I believe that the things he accomplishes in office will not be recognized by the masses in his day and time; but cherished by the few who are capable of seeing the bigger picture in his time, and by the unblinking and critical eye of history.

I believe he will not betray the oath he took, and awakes each day reminding himself of the importance of remaining true to that oath every second of every day.

I believe all of this until he stops believing it himself. And if he ever does we will all know it.

You can take your exact words and use them for Bush and the war....re-read this with THAT thought....

Plagiarizing and manipulation of another's words to utilize in a fashion that is directly against what the originating poster's position is. . . How low of you!

Never would have thought I'd ever see you stoop to such a low!

Ex:" I need to know what your inside source is that you know what Bush is thinking and what his motives are. WOW

It's nowhere near as presumptuous as those of you who seem to think you know what your god is thinking and what his motivations are.

THAT is the way I see him....this country is divided...between basicly the way things YOU see them and the way things I see them....to put it in a nutshell.....people HATE Bush....people HATE Obama...

The difference between the two groups is that those of us who dislike Bush simply wanted a president who we consider our intellectual equal.  Those of you who dislike Obama already had one.  ;)

No. . . when have I "blasted you" prior to this?

Moreover, what you did was cheap, low, and lazy. I simply called you on it and now you've got your feathers all ruffled over it. Get over it yourself.

Never would have thought I'd ever see you stoop to such a low!

In brief discussion with Henry, and internal review, of my posting above I have reached a decision point.

My response to Henry was an over reaction driven by various factors, the least of which involved Henry's response to the original posting.

I publicly apologise to Henry for this!

Yeah, Pa...I do!!

PH is one of THE classiest person that I have ever had the priviledge to have met, let alone correspond with.
I myself, overacted to his posts, and I do appreciate PH's generous apology.

Thanks PH!
