My truck is in the shop, so I can't. . .

Lately I have been experiencing a condition with my truck known as "hard start". I took it to Ed Martin this morning, but I am fairly certain I know what the hell it is. . . the injectors!  :spooked: Cold starting is no problem for the truck, but once it reaches operating temperature it is hard as hell to start!

GM extended the warranty on the injectors to 200,000 miles or 7 years, whichever comes first, because of the cracked injector bodies and other problems associated with the injectors. My truck has 107,000 miles on it and has run like a champ to this point. Now I am sweating though.

The dealership was on the phone with GM when I went back a little while ago. They are not sure what to do. (My truck passed the 7 year mark just 5 days ago).

Lets see where GM falls. . .

Ph, I don't know about GM diesels, but on my Ford diesel, when the glow pugs went bad the was hard as hell to start and in the winter with bad glow pugs it was a no go.  Never had injector problems.

Glo plugs are fine. This is a KNOWN problem with Duramax Diesels due to the cheap injector components used in building them during their earlier years. The problem is that there is not enough lubrication within the low sulphur diesel and the GM filtration system doesn't filter out enough of the particulates in diesel. Result- in the former the seals on the injector tips dry out, and in the latter the injector tips plug up; both situations resulting in increased pressure due to the common rail system and cracked injector bodies and high return line rates.

I've been noticing decreased economy and increasingly harder starts when the engine is at operating temperatures for awhile. Its why I made the appointment in the first place, because I knew it was probably a bad injector or two.

GM increased the standard warranty of 3 years - 36k miles (on the 2001-2004 model years of this vehicle), to 7 years or 200k miles, because of a class action suit brought against them over the failures.

The vehicle has been a good one thus far, and while initially I had some bugs to get worked out of it, after that it has been great. Until now.

If I could I'd trade it in on a brand new one just like it. . .

Boy all that diesel trouble makes me glad I've got gas.  Well, not me, the truck.  Yeah the truck, it runs on gas. ;)

Well, I had a Ford E350 6.3 diesel box truck for 11 years.  In that time I put brake on it once. 1 universal joint. I replaced the other one just to be safe.  Two radiator hoses. Antifreeze change.

A set of tires.  I found this guy who was changing the tires on his big motor coach, the tires had around 20K miles, he was changing them for new so he could take his coach to Alaska, I bought them for $20 each. 6 tires.  16 glow plugs.  Probably could have cheaped it out on the plugs.  When one when bad I replace all of them.  Why screw around with a possible 16 trips to the garage.  Also it got as good gas mileage as some of my big pickups  Very happy with my diesel.  If I was working, I would buy one again.  The retired Troll  :seeya2:

I love my diesel and do not regret purchasing it. After this problem is remediated I will be looking into a proper after market filtration unit in order to eliminate the potential for injector plugging. As for the seals drying out, the replacements no longer have the issue so that one is not a problem any longer.

My historical fuel economy on the road is typically around 22 - 24 MPG, and 18 MPG city. On my last trip I noticed my road mileage had fallen to 18 MPG and that raised a red flag for me. Then the hard starts began. . .

Since the vehicle was fine starting cold, it clearly indicated to me that the engine had at least one cracked injector body, and probably more. When cold the fuel viscosity is substantially changed, enough to allow the injector pump to easily maintain fuel pressures despite the leaks, and everything else in the engine is tight. Once it reaches operating temps though the viscosity drops and things loosen up, and while the engine and pump are running fine to sustain operation, if you shut it off the pump has problems achieving pressure because of all the leaking of fuel into the crankcase and return lines. . .

This is just a thought. If you are a small business owner in your community or if you know one pass this along...customer service counts. Don't expect that people will return b/c you're there.

I try to patronize small locally owned businesses more often than not and I've obsreved that after they get to know you, they're super! But when they don't...lukewarm. It's the new customers that you want to entice to come back. The regulars have already gotten to know you.
