One of the reasons I switched to Dish Network.

I wish I could switch to Dish...when they first became available in our area I called them, they came out and there's no way I would be able to recept the satellite because of stands of trees that surround my property... :(

That really sucks. Know what you mean about the trees, though.

I'm lucky because the direction that needs to be clear to receive the signal is wide open.  Whew.

The magistrate could answer this better, but IIRC, you need to send them a copy of the death certificate and they will have to file a claim against the estate for their balance.  Next time they call, tell them the person is deceased and find out where to send the copy to.  Then they can file a claim with the court.

I have sent them a copy of the death certificate. I have also sent them a certified letter from the courthouse stating that there was no estate opened in my father's death.  The only thing that they had that is of any value is their house trailer and 2 vehicles. All three things are titled in both names. According to the attorney we talked to, Indiana law states that if something is duelly titled, the second party on the title has rights of survivorship and creditors cannot touch it for estate purposes. As of right now, the only thing left is the trailer that mom is living in. She can't drive, so both cars are now gone. When I talked to this CC company before, they said it was no problem, the balance would be written off and we would not hear from them again. Then Mom gets a letter yesterday from a collection agency demanding the balance. When I called them to find out what was up, this lady was a royal *itch! She said they would take Mom's trailer to satisfy the balance. We're talking about a $500 balance here. I told them what our attorney said about the rights of survivorship and they said it wouldn't matter. She said we will see them in court.
My mom is all upset about this and I told her not to worry about it. Once we get the paperwork from them, we'll let the attorney handle it. The whole thing just p's me off because the lady didn't have to be so nasty about it.

My EX sister-in-law is giving my home number out to what I can only assume are her creditors.  So, now I'm getting calls from people asking for her and where she's at now.    Well, I called her to give her the numbers of those who called for her (because I didn't give out her current information-I SHOULD have) and she was like, 'I'd NEVER give anyone your number as my contact number'.

PA-LEASE!!!  Why else would they call me, we don't even have the same last name anymore???

Letting your attorney handle it is the best bet.  Collection agencys buy debts at a discount and anything they can collect over what they paid is how they earn money.   They have no morals and will do anything to intimidate someone into paying them money.  Tell mom to hang up when they call, or better yet get caller ID and just ignore the SOB's.  They can't eat ya!

I have one of those...only it's a current brother-in-law! And he has admitted to putting our name/numbers down!

A current one?  That should make for interesting reunions!   I feel your pain.

Don't understestimate the power of a credit card debt collector.  They will find the phone numbers and addresses of anyone remotely related to the person they're trying to collect from and they will call these people...thinking that the person they're trying to collect from will become totally embarrassed that a debt collector is calling relatives that they'll pay up or in some cases the relatives will even chip in and pay the debt...debt collectors are worse than ambulance chasing attorneys.

We would have to clear to the south, but we're talking about 50 to 100 foot tall Virgin maples...and that just isn't going to happen. I'll stick with whining and complaining about cable before I'd clear those trees.
