Hate to say this but the teacher should not have shamed the class or made the comments on FB.  She could have handled it differently.

A Wake County middle school teacher has been suspended following complaints about disparaging comments she made about her class, Christianity and Southern culture on her Facebook page.

Melissa Hussain, an eighth-grade teacher at West Lake Middle School in Apex, wrote on her Facebook page that it was a "hate crime" that students left a Bible on her desk and how she "was able to shame her kids" over the incident. Her Facebook page included comments from friends saying that the parents of Hussain's students were "bigoted, stupid and uncaring."

Some parents were angry that she was allowed to stay in the classroom, leading them to complain to school board members on Friday. Hussain was later told to leave her classroom on Friday and is not back at the school.

Greg Thomas, a Wake schools' spokesman, said Hussain has been suspended with pay. But he said he couldn't discuss the reason for the suspension because of employee confidentiality rules. School administrators say they are still investigating the situation.

Hussain could not be immediately reached for comment today.

Why should she not have shamed the class?  From reading further on this, it appears that the only comment she made on facebook was that it was a hate crime and she shamed the class.  Most of the anti-xtian, offensive comments were made by her friends.

Moreover, what I think is in play here is an outright setup of this teacher by the students which was encouraged by their fundie, ignorant ass parents.  These children were being disruptive to the class by asking questions about "God" during evolution lessons (again probably encouraged by their parents), reading the Bible instead of doing their schoolwork, etc.  When do we stop catering to dumbasses in this country who have God on the brain?

Here's more on the story from another article:

Quote
Parents said the situation escalated after a student put a postcard of Jesus on Hussain's desk that the teacher threw in the trash. Parents also said Hussain sent to the office students who, during a lesson about evolution, asked about the role of God in creation.

On her Facebook page, Hussain wrote about students spreading rumors that she was a Jesus hater. She complained about her students wearing Jesus T-shirts and singing "Jesus Loves Me." She objected to students reading the Bible instead of doing class work.

But Annette Balint, whose daughter is in Hussain's class, said the students have the right to wear those shirts and sing "Jesus Loves Me," a long-time Sunday School staple. She said the students were reading the Bible during free time in class.

"She doesn't have to be a professing Christian to be in the classroom," Balint said. "But she can't go the other way and not allow God to be mentioned."

Still think she wasn't targeted by a bunch of ignorant rednecks?

Imagine what would have happened if she had brought several copies of the Koran to the classroom and left them on her students' desks.

Wouldn't you think the parents should have taught their children religious tolerance, being x-tian and compassionate and all?

Exactly.  These same retrograde retards would have been just as up in arms, if not more so.  I'm constantly hearing that these aren't the "real Christians" when things like this are pointed out, and that "real Christians wouldn't do that", etc.  Bullshit!  Real Christians do this kind of shit every day in this country.

That's the point.  They're not tolerant.  This is why religion has been, is, and continues to be one of the most vile memes ever.  Ignorance begets ignorance begets ignorance.

IMHO both sides were in the wrong and it still should have been dealt with differently.  Knowing how news reporting like is it's hard telling what has been left out of the story or embellished so without actually having first hand knowledge of what went on who can really say where the fault lies?

being "politically correct" and "tolerant" is just a couple of reasons WHY we are in the shape we are in today...

Wasn't there something about compassion, etc. that was the big difference between the old testament and the new testament?

Or am I just dreaming about the idea that jesus said to "Turn the other cheek" and all that there kind of stuff?

That's an idea I got from sunday school, originally.

don't get me wrong compassion and tolerance is very important, and I was saying that a little tounge and cheek, but being tolerant to God's word can be very conflicting to being tolerant in today's world.

I think sometimes we need to be a little more Intolerant to what is being demanded by today's politically correct crowd.....as a goal, we ALL should try to be intolerant to sin....or not accept what we KNOW to be wrong, just to satisfy others as to not offend anyone....

for me there is right and there is wrong....and toting a fine line of being tolerant and intolerant is always a task...

sorry, I'm rambling and taking this off track, but the bottom line is GOD does NOT suck!!!...we just don't have to tolerate certain things.

I believe that was Jesus. Something about "he who is without sin casting the first stone," capisce?

Doesn't that depend on which version of the bible you read?

Yea, those nasty negroes have really gotten out of control and gays wanting the same rights are driving millions of christian couples to become homosexuals...

Of course, all tongue in cheek, but I think that we have been way too tolerant of the religious nutjobs who "preach tolerance", but have no idea what it is.

Okay I will post my two cents now.  My elementary school students can choose to go to this particular middle school and most do.  This school used to be an "application" school so they basically could tell you no if they didn't like your address.  The parent mentality has not changed.

My coworker has a child in one of her classes and received the emails in question.  Number 1, she is the THIRD teacher in that class this year.  Coincidence?  My coworker's son also said she is the only one who has taught them anything.  She stays after school for tutoring, comes in early for tutoring, etc...  She is a model teacher.   She was doing her job!  She wasn't teaching evolution because she thought in her opinion she should.  She was teaching curriculum.

The mob mentality of these parents and children began before the Facebook remark was made.  The Got Jesus? t-shirts and the yelling out in class had already begun.  All of this being fueled by the parents as you can tell by the quote made from one of the ignorant bunch.  The reason it escalated was 1.  She sent out an email to all 120 of her student's parents letting them know that she had recently posted new grades on her online grade book so they could check it out.   She didn't hide the email addresses like she should have of all those parents and one jack ass thought it would be great to email all of these parents and start a religious war with the teacher.   2.  The facebook remark said something to the tune of "Can't wait to meet with Christ boy and his parents tomorrow."  Her acquaintances responses were seemingly worse than her original posting.  Why she doesn't have full privacy on her facebook is beyond me.

Also one of the arguments later starting from this parent was the next unit was based on Global Warming.   So basically they are pissed because she's muslim, pissed because she is doing her job, and pissed that they are repubs and hate science.  It is all bullshit!

If I were that teacher and I was permanently let go, I would press slander suits on those families and discrimination suits on the school system and the administration of the school because they let this go on.    I would not stop until I was heard!
Take time to smell the roses.

Thanks for posting that Kimmi.  Makes me wonder if this would have happened if she had been of American heritage as bad as that sounds.
