I find it interesting that someone would attempt to support belief as "common sense", when believing in without proof that it exists, doesn't pass the common sense test. If you wanna believe based on faith or whatever it is that you cite, then fine, but it's definitely not common sense.  I've seen extremely despicable and vile acts from some very people who "love" God. I know, I know, they're not real Christians, but emotionally, they "love" God. I don't think the proof is there.

I like the original question in this thread. Why is it that people attribute what's considered good to God, but ignore the fact that if there is a God then he's obviously allowing bad things to happen? Why is that? Where are the prayers of gratitude when a hurricane wipes out half a state? Or do they think that all bad is a product of evil? That would mean that evil is stronger than God since he should have the power to trump that. It seems like there's a lot to reconcile w/that question and not enough reasonable answers...

But then, on the other hand, I "believe" in String Theory.

Now if you have ever studied some of the principles of that, you will certainly question the "common sense" of it all. Indeed! Some of it is downright insane!

Sorry, off topic, but I think common sense is overrated.

No longer involved? I would venture there are millions of people that would disagree wholeheartedly with that statement. You start a thread titled "God Sucks" and you don't expect Christians to take offense at it? You go start a thread like that in the middle east if you have the balls and say Allah sucks, if you survive, come back and let us know how it all worked out.

What is there to ponder? You are being a trolling prick with someone's faith, not a lot to ponder there.

LMAO!!  More name calling offered up in the stead of cogent rebuttal.  Since you don't put much stock in book learnin', you'll probably not put much stock in the fallacy of Appeal to Popularity

The Appeal to Popularity has the following form:

   1. Most people approve of X (have favorable emotions towards X).
   2. Therefore X is true.

The basic idea is that a claim is accepted as being true simply because most people are favorably inclined towards the claim. More formally, the fact that most people have favorable emotions associated with the claim is substituted in place of actual evidence for the claim. A person falls prey to this fallacy if he accepts a claim as being true simply because most other people approve of the claim.

Sorry lex, but your name calling and emotions don't hold water here.  And don't think I didn't notice the swipe at Islam there as well.  You're all to willing to paint them and their beliefs as foolish while ignoring the fact that based on evidence, your beliefs are just as foolish as theirs.

What I hate about college grads over the years I have had to deal with them is the complete lack of common sense a lot of them display. I put NO faith in degrees and I judge people by their skills and talents. I have been to college, I am NOT impressed. They pass retards through it, and they have retards teaching it.

If you want to use "book learning" as your basis to bash kooks, then you are in trouble. Quantum Physicists are at the higher end of the food chain and they are "the snake handling Pentecostals of the science community. Have you ever heard some of the insane bullshit that comes out of their lectures and of their work?

They are a prime example of what happens when you got eggheads in a university trying to come up with new reasons to bullshit ignorant facility into justifying their tenure and giving them any form of money.

"Bob is going to microwave a burrito while singing Christmas Carols in French and we will formulate just how he's effecting the subatomic particles of the cheese in the burrito with his cheery thought waves."

*points to white board with mathematical scrawling from a drunken lab chimp*

"BRAVO!! You cheeky fellows will put our University on the map with your cheesy burrito caroling. Here's a check boys...see you at the next budget hearing!"

Expulsion from ignorance? More like plumbing new depths of it via arrogance.

Wow!  No faith in, or respect for, college, it professors, and it's graduates, eh?  Well I guess there's no hope of you ever seeing past an omnipotent being that simply farted out the universe and still is actively engaged in the lives of his people, regardless of the fact that if you used some real common sense, you'd see that the god you supposedly believe in is the real prick based on some of things cited earlier in this thread.

You'll also continue to go through life believing in the scribblings of ancient men, the determinations of men as to what eventually landed in the bible by The Council of Nicea, things that go bump in the night, yada, yada.

They're typically taught in logic classes.  Where I went to school, they were under the auspices of the philosophy department.

Sorry kiddo, these people I would imagine have had experiences that have lead them to believe. I know you would like to believe that Christians are all just a bunch of ignorant idiots and you dig elevating yourself and your petty "book learning" up above them. This arrogant bigotry really shows a lot about your character and indeed calls into question the quality of this "book learning" you hold so dear.

Again, I am sorry God can't be measured or exposed with our primitive science tools so that it can be shown to people to include the truly dim, but the whole thing is about faith, or perhaps a more simplistic explanation, trust. Without it, you will never see him, or even know where to look.

As far as why "shit happens" you been given reasonable explanations by me repeatedly, but you ignore them, which goes back to my saying, this really just a bash Christians thread. It started off trying to bait HH and you didn't get much satisfaction from him.

Insulting Islam? More reading comprehension problems, and digging desperately for some ammo to boot, tsk tsk.

People have all sorts of experiences all the time.  It doesn't go any farther to support the reality of a deity.  The human mind is a powerful thing.  You get a bunch of people together who all think they've experienced something similar, and one can convince themselves that just about anything is true regardless of evidence to the contrary.

That's why I'm fact based, and not faith based.  I'm unwilling to disengage a large portion of my brain in order to conform to what the majority believes in.  If everyone were to disengage their brains, we would still believe that the earth is flat.

But your explanations aren't reasonable.  This thread is replete with examples of people of faith getting the middle finger from their god.  It happens over and over again.  My question remains unanswered.

You'd better go back and read the thread again and cite one place where I called anyone a name.  I don't think the name calling started until you showed up.   I used general terms, but I didn't call any member a name.

Then you must have had a different educational experience than I did.  I busted my rear end to get through college and the curriculum was very rigorous.

Why do we get the middle finger from God? If you are wanting a spiritual explanation here it is, again. It's the truth as I know it, from what I have gleaned over the years, mostly from asking God "WTF?".

First and foremost, this is a spiritual battlefield and it's enemy territory. God's will isn't always done here by us, most obviously. The planet pretty much runs on it's on set of preset rules and if we are retarded and get in it's way, we get crushed by nature.

It's all a testing grounds for us, and a battlefield for both us and the spirit realm. But it's all just a fraction of a blink of an eye in the scheme of eternity, if you get greased in some screwy way though it, it's no big deal you will be judged accordingly.

Frankly in the scheme of things in the big picture our existence is small potatoes, so FFS get it right if you can at least try. Give it a hearty swing, fight till the very end and die satisfied.

We are a fallen race, we are rotten at our core from the fall. We trash each other and all of creation around us as we spread like vermin. There is a purity to God that restricts him from handling us, we have to be cleansed of our evil and he's put forth measures to do this. We don't cooperate with these measures with a damn.

Miracles? I have seen them, bonafided according to Hoyle miracles, and yet too, I have asked for one and got *crickets*, the answer was not no...but Fuck No!! Yeah, it pissed me off and I bitched to high heaven about it. But in the end, I trusted the driving to the Lord. I am not God, I can't see the big picture of things.

In the end, stuff happens and there are so many reasons or lack there of for it, and sometimes it doesn't make an ounce of sense and I just want to scream. But nobody promised me a perfect world, and though I wish it was, who am I to bitch that it isn't?

I know who I am though, and what side I am on. I'm not forgetting what I have seen, nor am I forgetting what I know. I don't have the time nor inclination to bullshit someone, I have enough on my plate to worry about.

On thing to ponder, in the old testament some prophet called upon the Lord for some help and sat down by a river for 30 days until he got the help he wanted. I believe it was an Arch Angel that showed up at last and the prophet was sort of bitch about how long it took for him to get there.

The angel replied that he was dispatched the moment he started praying, but he was battling with the Prince of Persia and it took him that long to get away from him. AND, he had to help this prophet and get back to fighting him. ...So don't dick around dude...lol..wtf do you want of me...(there I go paraphrasing horribly again).

30 days? For a main prophet? Hmm...How's that fit in with our Fast Food Jesus concepts?
