Yep, bunch of morons making something out of nothing.  >:(  Would it have kicked up a fuss if they were to write in calligraphy "Jesus is the son of God"?  Of course not!  Their faith and the faith of their children must be very weak if they think they will be converted and indoctrinated by writing such a simple statement.

They're also guilty of something Ex and I discussed on another thread.   They're all scared to death of just about EVERYTHING.

Just food for thought here. Why is it everyone, or most everyone, comes unhinged at the anyone mentioning this countries religion or wanting anyone to learn about the Bible when they see nothing wrong with teaching about another countries religion or their bible? Seems as though there is a little bit of a two face thing going on here. You be ashamed of being a Christian but if you can accept Islam or learn about it you're great. How can you sit back and bash one religion and not another which also has a God. Do both God's not suck equally and, if not, why not?

The only people coming 'unhinged' are the Christians in this example.  It seems that's it's just fine as long as it's Christianity, or the Bible, being taught in the schools, but lo and behold, look what happens when it's Islam.  There is also a huge difference in education about different religions, and proselytizing.  I certainly saw nothing in this assignment that was any attempt to indoctrinate or convert the students.

I'm trying to find verification of this, but some sites are reporting that this teacher had already had studies on Judaism and Christianity prior to this lesson on Islam.  If that's indeed the case, then I don't understand what the problem is/was with this particular assignment.

1.  I bash all religions equally.  Religion is one of the vilest memes ever put forth against humanity and the problems that the scourge of religion causes are readily available for all to see.

2.  The Christian and Muslim 'gods' are the same god, although some willfully ignorant Christians will argue that point with you until they're blue in the face.  The God of Judaism = The God of Christianity = The God of Islam.

So yes, the thread title covers all three.

The fact is you have it wrong in your question and nobody really wanted to point that out to you.

It all comes down to "separation of church and state". Period.

The "lesson" in this case was calligraphy, which has many styles, among them Arabic and other middle-eastern.

Yeah, I went back and read her question again.  She's really missing the point right here:

This country doesn't have a single religion, let alone an official one.

Here's the verification:

"LaPorte's lesson was part of a survey of different religions. When students study a different part of the world, they also learn about that region's culture, religion and political systems. Students had studied Christianity and Judaism then had moved on to Islam. They will also learn about Hinduism and Buddhism. Comparative religions is part of every world geography students' required standards for Standards of Learning tests."

^^

That right there shows you that this group of militant Christians let their ignorance, and primarily their fear, shut down an entire school system over nothing.  This is from an article on CNN with pretty much describes exactly what happened there:

The threat in Augusta County, Virginia, is very real. But the threat there is not a homework assignment about Islam. It's ignorance. Ignorance shut down the schools. Ignorance breeds fear. Fear breeds hate. Hate breeds violence. And violence is presumably what was feared as schools were closed on the recommendation of law enforcement following the flood of "hateful" and "profane" calls, emails.

How sad.

Then why not use our letters and numbers rather than what they were doing, or just normal language rather than a religious passage?
