Unskilled labor does not deserve the same wages as skilled labor. I'm not jealous of business owners who happen to be better off than me because a lot of them started at the bottom and worked their way up so they deserve the money they make. Personally I wouldn't want the headache of being a business owner small or large. You might say I don't have an overinflated opinion of my worth and never did. That's not saying I feel like I'm not worth anything that's saying the pay should match the skill and flipping hamburgers is a level entry job and not worthy of $15 pr hour. If you want more money get into management if you have the knowledge or can be trained to do so.

Here's a bigger question for you to wrap your head around.

Who makes the determination of what someone "is worth" or what they should make in order to be able to survive?  That question applies to single people, married people, people with different lots in life either by choice or force, etc.  Who determines that?

What about a single mom, or any other such instance you can think of, where a person is on a fixed income (social security etc.), or a fixed hourly wage at a low rate, who are trying to make ends meet when inflation is driving expenses up out of their control?  What about a person who wants to work, is working, but has a 60-mile round trip back and forth, and by the time they pay for the gas over the course of a week, their ability to make ends meet falls in jeopardy?

Who makes those determinations?  Corporations are never going to make the right decision, so when and where is it appropriate for government to step in and enforce some sort of minimum standards?

That's a lot to think about, and I don't really expect any sort of sensible reply given your history, but put that in your head and spin it around a few times.  I'd be glad to hear your thoughts if you have any.

And you don't even have to address unexpected medical emergencies/situations.

Hank, I'd also like to hear your thoughts on the above.

If the minimum wage is raised by the government the price of goods and service will increase to compensate so it would be a vicious cycle which would end up with the people no better off than they were to start with and, in some cases, worse off.  Government interference is not the answer and it would hurt small business the worst.

So what is the solution?   You didn't answer even one of my questions.

A BOOMING economy is the ONLY solution.

Free Enterprise at it's best creates competition...competition makes a corporation want better employees. To get better employees during a boom, means you have to pay better wages.  If you don't pay, they can go somewhere else and get it.

Is it perfect? Nope, but it is by far the best solution available. IMO.

This is a myth.  Raising wages increases purchasing power in those households with higher propensities to spend their income.  That floods the economy with billions of dollars which is good for everyone, especially business.

The Sam's Club vs. Costco wage and benefit dichotomy disproves this.

After reviewing the labor statistical data contained at BLS.gov, it seems apparent that the market is flooded with low paying, low benefit compensating jobs, many of them part time. Meaning that each employable head accounts for multiple positions statistically. Still, the crossing of the unemployment headcount and available jobs trend points is going to force businesses to raise wage rates eventually.

The problem is a 10% increase in shit is still shit. . .

All I know for a fact is......if you want to become a journeyman electrician or telecom journeyman......they are screaming for help.  After five years of apprenticeship they are making $35 plus an hour w/benefits.  You just have to have a High School Diploma.  As our economy booms...the skilled trade industry is going to boom with nice wages.  Plumbers, carpenters, pipe-fitters, electricians, HVAC....if you are not lazy and willing to get dirty......the opportunities are there.

Say what you will...

Pay gains during Trump's first year in office best since the Great Recession

  • The Employment Cost Index, a measure of salary and benefit costs, registered a 2.6 percent gain for the full year, tied for the best since 2007.
  • That gives President Donald Trump the best wage gains since the Great Recession, easily topping any during former President Barack Obama's entire term.

Another example of positive wages during a boom....my company is so busy right now, we are bidding work at a higher than normal proposal, due to the large amount of work we already have.  We are still winning work. We are now having higher profit margins and spending more on tools, equipment, building improvements and we are receiving more on our profit sharing.  All of this improves the economy even more.

The Troll

The trouble is, that most of the jobs are held my older and senior citizens who need to work because their S.S check is too small.  I have heard of some citizens S.S. Check is $400 a month.  I bet you couldn't live on that and even own a car, let alone eat.

How many people out there thinks that the tariff that Trump put on steel and aluminum will end up with a net loss of jobs for the American Workers.

We will lose more jobs, because Trump doesn't know shit.  :trustme:

Not if they reopen or open new steel and aluminum plants here that were lost overseas due to the high tax rate.
