Depression and sickness is a terrible thing to face as we age.  When you are sick and tired of being sick and tired, it's time to go.   :yes:

  What the problem is that you have to do it alone in hotel room or by yourself at home alone.  I think the right to die and have the help of a doctor or doctors should be a law.  By going to a doctor to commit suicide lets the doctor have to time to deal with your problems where you might see the light that suicide is not the solution.

I rarely understand why someone kills themself. I can understand if you are terminally ill and cannot get relief from pain or are in a hopeless situation with abuse. The rest I think is just selfish. Someone has to clean up after you, you Rob someone of you wisdom or experience and probably Mark someone for the rest of their lives. My grandfather hung himself and both an uncle and my sister have thought about it. I have two friends who lost children to suicide, one a teenager and the other a young adult with two small children. Drugs were not an issue in any of these situations. No one was ever the same.

A letter from Charles Krauthammer:

I have been uncharacteristically silent these past ten months. I had thought that silence would soon be coming to an end, but I'm afraid I must tell you now that fate has decided on a different course for me.

In August of last year, I underwent surgery to remove a cancerous tumor in my abdomen. That operation was thought to have been a success, but it caused a cascade of secondary complications – which I have been fighting in hospital ever since. It was a long and hard fight with many setbacks, but I was steadily, if slowly, overcoming each obstacle along the way and gradually making my way back to health.

However, recent tests have revealed that the cancer has returned. There was no sign of it as recently as a month ago, which means it is aggressive and spreading rapidly. My doctors tell me their best estimate is that I have only a few weeks left to live. This is the final verdict. My fight is over.

I wish to thank my doctors and caregivers, whose efforts have been magnificent. My dear friends, who have given me a lifetime of memories and whose support has sustained me through these difficult months. And all of my partners at The Washington Post, Fox News, and Crown Publishing.

Lastly, I thank my colleagues, my readers, and my viewers, who have made my career possible and given consequence to my life's work. I believe that the pursuit of truth and right ideas through honest debate and rigorous argument is a noble undertaking. I am grateful to have played a small role in the conversations that have helped guide this extraordinary nation's destiny.

I leave this life with no regrets. It was a wonderful life – full and complete with the great loves and great endeavors that make it worth living. I am sad to leave, but I leave with the knowledge that I lived the life that I intended.

I don't think anyone is ever the same after someone close to them dies, either by their own hand or otherwise.  I can't possibly imagine someone wanting to take their own life either; especially someone who has an 11-year-old daughter like Bourdain. 

However, I also know that I could never have an understanding being unable to "walk a mile in their shoes," as the old saying goes.

I kind of agree, even from a religious aspect, my opinion is that is between them and God.  I don't think it should be promoted by the government.

Someone deep in depression isn't killing themselves to be selfish. Someone with severe depression doesn't think logically, they can only see what they believe is their own unworthiness and believe people around them would be better off if they were no longer there.  They are desperate and feel they have no choice.  To be that deep in the pit of depression is unimaginable by those who have never felt it.

I know, that is exactly what my sister said when we talked about it. She said the only thing that stopped her was she thought her kids would be hurt by her action.

I agree, you are never the same after a loved one dies. I think k it is worse when they die out of order and I think it would be even harder if they killed themself. I would think the anger and guilt would be so magnified.

Having lost several friends via suicide, I couldn't agree more with what you've stated.

The saddest part about it is those living every day with depression, with no end in sight as far as they can see. And the fear it instills in those of us that love them; that one day they will do the same. I have a number of friends and a couple of relatives in that situation right now. . .  :'(
