That monument that was closed is adjacent to the side walk and people just walk up to it and there is no one in attendance there.  It was just blocked off so people couldn't go up and read the names.  You walk off the sidewalk and go past it and back on to the sidewalk.  There was no reason to close it period.

LIE! This happened today at the very site you are talking about. There was a US Park Service Ranger there to turn people away, (and there was a crowd), and this republican conservative representative openly berates this woman and attempts to blame the US Park Service for the shutdown.

However, a 30 year vet of federal service, currently out of work thanks to ass hats like this rep., steps up to the plate and calls it as he, and 800,000 out of work federal workers see it; as well as millions of other US Citizens as well.

What??????!!!!!!!  There was a park ranger there today, yes, but normally there are none there.  So where's the lie?  Why are they paying someone to keep people out when there is normally no one there when it is open?  Things would be normal if they hadn't closed it in the first place and there would be no problem.

The National World War II Memorial was funded almost entirely by private contributions, as specified in Public Law 103-32. The campaign received more than $197 million in cash and pledges. Support came from hundreds of thousands of individual Americans, hundreds of corporations and foundations, veterans groups, dozens of civic, fraternal and professional organizations, states and one territory, and students in 1,200 schools across the country.

Donated and pledged funds were used to cover the total project costs of approximately $182 million. These costs include site selection and design, construction and sculpture, a National Park Service maintenance fee required by the Commemorative Works Act, groundbreaking and dedication ceremonies, fund raising, and the 11-year administrative costs of the project from its inception in 1993 through completion in 2004.

Remaining funds are held on deposit with the U.S. Treasury in a National WWII Memorial Trust Fund. The funds will be used by the American Battle Monuments Commission solely to benefit the World War II Memorial.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said he "stands by" his claim a House Republican told President Obama "I cannot even stand to look at you" during budget talks.

Durbin -- the second-ranking Democrat in the Senate -- said on his Facebook page the Republican, who he did not name, made the disrespectful remark to Obama during negotiations with the White House during the federal budget standoff.

Asked about it during Wednesday's regular daily briefing with reporters, White House spokesman Jay Carney said, "It did not happen."

Carney said he had discussed the claim with a "participant in the meeting," The Hill reported.

"Senator Durbin stands by his comments," Durbin spokesman Max Gleischman said.

"The senator should disclose who told him this account of events, retract his reckless allegation immediately, and apologize," Buck said.

Durbin's office did not immediately respond to The Hill's request for comment.
