They say when you get really old, your taste buds are the first to go.

By any chance do you remember the beef shortage we had here in America thirty years or so, ago.  They shipped in grass fed beef from Canada, Australia, Argentina.  They sold buffalo and beefalo, beef cows breed by buffaloes and those animals were feed with nothing but grass.  You surely heard the statement, you are what you eat.  Well Brainiac, if you like to eat grass go too it.   I'll spend my money on good old American prime or grade A beef that is grain feed.

Why don't you go to the meat store and buy the worse piece of meat in the case and cook it with some grass clipping and enjoy yourself.  :haha:  :haha:

There is a guy here that raises bison and they are grass fed plus get grain and corn. They taste great! But some people just assume they are all grass fed! I bet that person doesn't realize that some cattle are done only on grass and not grain!

When my father was raising beef cattle, we would only let them have grass and other hay. He tried raising one on corn and other grains and found the beef to be very grainy and fatty, not much meat! He decided after that to go with grass fed beef only!!

I've never had bison. How does it compare to venison tastewise?

I've had a bunch of Bison in my years. The township I lived in Illinois before coming to Hoosierville had an annual "wild-west days" festival and I went every single year specifically for the Bison burgers.

Very lean meat, similar to venison, so once cooked the meat has to be kept warm in an oil bath to prevent it from drying out to the point of resembling jerky. But let me tell you that you will not consume a better burger than one made up of Bison. I would gorge on the stuff every fall.  (Between that and the fall run of salmon I would pack on some weight every damn fall - winter.)

In fact, one of the local burger / hot dog joints eventually included it on their daily menu and I always stop for a couple when I pass through there.  :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

OK! I'm convinced! I'll bite the bullet, dig into the wallet and splurge on some.

Thanks all!

You won't be disappointed.

It's so ironic that a Native American staple was nearly hunted to extinction over it's hide, and not it's meat. Especially one that is so tasty! I would guess that had their hides and heads not been so popular as trophy displays, Bison would have become an "American" staple meat culturally.

Yep!  Get you some bison Bo D.  Great burgers and healthier for you than ground beef.  There's a restaurant in Jacksonville, FL which specializes in bison.  It's called Ted's Montana Grill.  According to their website, they also have a location in Alexandria, VA, and at Crystal City in Arlington.  Those should be doable for you to try out.

There's also one in Indianapolis for any of you up that way.

I have had it.  It is okay.  Not worth the extra money, in my opinion.  But you should give it a try if you get the opportunity.

You've had bison, or went to Ted's Montana Grill?

A friend of ours went to Mounds Park today and snapped this picture. I sure would like to have it made into a picture to hang on the wall.
