No, it is because standards have changed. In 1960 the standard was one yard of material was 36 inches long and 36 inches wide. The current standard is now 36 inches long and 45 inches wide.

I tried to check that out and couldn't come up with anything which made me wonder if it was a trick question.  I haven't done any buying fabric or sewing in decades so I didn't have a clue that bolts had increased in width.

An aside:  Where I went to school, boys had to take Home Economics - which besides cooking etc., included sewing - and girls had to take Shop.  I still think that's a good idea.

Law of Logical Argument - Anything is possible if you don't know what you are talking about.  ;)

"You've probably noticed that opinion pollsters go out of their way to include as many morons as possible in surveys ... I think it's dangerous to inform morons about what their fellow morons are thinking. It only reinforces their opinions. And the one thing worse than a moron with an opinion is lots of them." -- Scott Adams

In other words: Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.  ;)

"It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends upon his not understanding it." -- Upton Sinclair

"Hitler is gone, but if the majority of our fellow citizens are more susceptible to the slogans of fear and race hatred than to those of peaceful accommodation and mutual respect among human beings, our political liberties remain at the mercy of any eloquent and unscrupulous demagogue." -- S. I. Hayakawa

I don't know why or exactly when it changed, maybe just because bigger is better. Some fabric even come 54 inches wide now, mostly upholstery fabrics. You can also get muslin and some quilt backing 108 inches wide. Your fabric lesson for the day.  :)

Ya, and you'd gladly fork over 90% of your earnings if you were in that situation. How the hell can any company have money stashed for hard times paying that kind of a tax on their earnings genius?

My #2 son, is now part of the United States Navy.  He has enlisted.  He finished with a 91 on his test and has his pick on his job placement.  He heads for Great Lakes Illinois for boot camp later this fall, then has one-year of classes, before he disembarks on his career for at least the next five years.

This is something he has been thinking about for a few years now. He has been in and out of school, working different jobs and finally decided that he is ready to take this path.

He is a great young man and I am extremely proud of him.

Outstanding!

I want to encourage you to attend his graduation ceremony there. It is an awesome sight to behold,(And there is a nice hotel close by along with a Bass Pro Shop store). It is an emotional time for the recruits and that day is one they remember the rest of their lives.

Encourage him to get his body into early (as in 0-dark-thirty) rise and to start running and working himself up toward 3-5 miles BEFORE boot. That will help him a ton if he can get that cycle established well beforehand.

And tell him to think of a nice name for his "brick". (He will understand that at some point early in his time at Great Lakes.)

If I am not mistaken this will be child number 2 active in the military?

Thanks PH, my oldest son has got out of the Military and is now in New Zealand (has been for the last year) and heading for Australia.

I am looking forward to his boot camp ceremony. I have heard cool things about it.

He has already began to run and work out. He is 25 years old and said he felt like an old man next to the 18 year old kids.....He seems as happy as I have seen him in a long time.....

I have 2 friends that are retired USN, one is a Lt. Cmdr. and the other is a Sr. Chief Petty Officer. I have a cousin who is a Jr. Grade Lt. I believe. Not sure of his rank!

wow, four more years and he can collect a retirement pension! That is awesome! How many people get to claim that statement by the time they are 40? Very cool!

I've had the honor and privilege of working with a number of retired veterans throughout my career; as they began their 2nd careers. Always a pleasure to work with individuals like them, and each and every single one of them became friends that I remain in weekly / daily contact with.

I've also had the honor of hiring a large number of veterans, some peace-time and a number of them from each and every conflict since the Vietnam conflict. Even today I count 7 combat veterans among those I hired for my current employer; and every single one of them remain members of my team despite the fact I moved to a different department 2 years ago. They all bid for and successfully obtained offers to fill openings that took place in my new department within that time frame. 3 of them are veterans of the current conflicts in the middle east- 2 of those 3 are disabled.

These men and women know the meaning of teamwork, dedication, and commitment; and you will not find a more motivated-driven team when it counts a veteran amongst its membership. I am deeply honored that these men chose to continue to remain members of my team. And I mean that with total sincerity.

I hope your son finds it as fulfilling as my own son has; and that he remains safe and sound within whatever length of time he serves our country and wherever he may be deployed.

I also salute you and your family, for I know all too well the sacrifices and stress being a military family can bring. It is never easy.  8)
