Stephen King was conscious, alert and even cracking jokes following an operation to treat his shattered leg and collapsed lung sustained after being struck by a van while out walking.

The best-selling horror author remained in serious but stable condition Monday at Central Maine Medical Center, hospital officials said. King faced additional surgery Monday on his leg and hip, with more surgery tentatively scheduled for later in the week.

"He's been alert and he's in pretty good spirits," Chuck Gill, the hospital's vice president, said earlier.

Hospital spokesman Laird Covey said King had been talking with his wife, Tabitha, adding, "I know that he has been cracking some jokes to the staff about his condition."

Officials said King was thrown 14 feet when he was hit Saturday by a van in rural Lovell, where he owns a summer home. Lovell is about 115 miles southwest of Bangor.

Here's a link to an interview (text) that took place a few months afterward with Mr. King. It gives you a real feel for what he went through and his perspectives on the incident; as told to Dateline:

For those of you too lazy or afraid to read the above, I'll just mention the fact that Mr King bought the van that hit him in order to keep it out  of the hands of twisted individuals that might use it as a freakish side show of sorts.

The interview includes comments from his wife (Tabitha) and an eyewitness to the event. . .

I think the film makers did a real good job with Dead Zone and Dream Catcher.

Dream Catcher, (or as I like to call it the Sh!t-weasels), did a good job I agree; but even then there are always details within the prose that are often over-looked by film makers. Always disappointing but they have to cut some of it out lest we be subjected to 5 to 6 hour long movies!

I guess I just get to focused on the details in anything I read and when they convert it to movies and leave the details I focused on out of the storyline I kind of feel let down. I've always struggled with this and need to learn to wipe the slate clean before viewing a film. . . My imagination is somehow always more vivid than the movies are. . .

I read it!!!! Lazy isn't in my vocabulary.  Man, he really went through hell. He's lucky to be alive today. I watched "Creep Show" 2 times today on "Chiller" channel. I can watch his movies a million times and never get tired of them.

I know Dex, I can watch them over and over myself, but my wife gets freaked out by them and so she doesn't like to watch them. . .  :'( SO, I have to wait until she's busy with something else and then I can have a Creepshow of my own!

I like most of his movies.  I think IT is only good for the first half when they are giving the back stories of all the people.  Once they get together, it is dumb!

My hubby doesn't care much for horror movies either. They are practically the only movies that can keep my attention. If a movie is kind of dry and slow paced, I can't sit still long enough to watch it. Sometimes, I think I have ADD.  :spooked: "The Mist" was a real nailbiter.

I agree.... the ending was kind of strange, but that's what Steven King is all about.... being strange ,and thinking outside of the box.  I have a clown phobia (which is strange because I am one  :jester: )and Pennywise gave me nightmares for weeks LOL!!!  :spooked: There was something about a clown with nasty ass fangs, that was very unsettling to my psyche.  :spooked:

1. I finally got 7000 posts
2. I finally got an avatar picture!!!! Woooohoooo!!!!  :sofa:

Does anybody remember Madame? Her puppeteer was Wayland Flowers. He passed in 1988,and she's working on a comeback. I bet she'd be real funny, doing the kind of comedy, that is allowed by the censors (or lack of) by todays standards. She was considered to be one dirrrrty broad way back when. I bet she'd be a hoot today LOL!!!

Back to Stephen King.....if you watch Kingdom Hospital, and read the final book in the Dark Tower series, he used his accident in both of them.  The driver of the van being distracted by the dog(s) after his dinner that was in a cooler.  If that's true, the driver should have pulled his ass over and moved the freaking cooler out of the dogs reach.   But then, King wouldn't have had this life experience to draw from and ruin at least one good story.
Looks like I've come full circle.
