Got to see my buddy the Hawk today! He stopped by right after we got home from the hospital!

Great to see you Henry!  8)

How did you get him there?  With a breaded tenderloin and a beer.

I know if I was fishing :fish: for catfish and Henry was a catfish, I'd use a breaded tenderloin for bait.  FISH ON!

Just got finished mowing a little bit ago. The whole time I was on the tractor, I had a Purple Martin escort!

I remember as a kid, one of my uncles owned a Purple Martin gas station. I've been curious about them ever since, but never actually saw one up close until last summer when I was mowing and a pair of them began escorting me. They did it almost every mowing last year.

Today was the first time I saw them this year, and it was 2 females. I'm actually considering putting up a house for them!

Sure would love to get some started here but they're hard to get they're so picky about their living quarters.  They do love them 'skeeters though.

I'm hearing they don't actually eat skeeters, but rather any flying insect. Then again, I also read where they rarely come close to humans, and these that I had last year and today, were flying right up to me on the tractor, and doing their dives and flybys right in front of me and along side of me. They are indeed purple martins, since the photographs I've seen of them are exactly the same birds.

They have to be nesting somewhere near here on the south end of town. I'm seriously considering putting up a house for them, in the hope they'll move in and bring their friends next year!

I know one thing, they always put a smile on my face. They are amazing birds and VERY agile and swift. They make dives and turns that would make a fighter pilot envious!

One of the past owners of our campground had a huge round Martin house about 20 ft off the ground.  It was loaded with Purple Martins and they flew all over the camp ground in the late evening 2 to 6 feet off the ground and they sure looked like they eat mosquitoes to me

He told me that he had to take it down each fall after they left for the South and clean each nest out.  He also blocked each hole until a certain day in the spring so the sparrows would take up housing.

He said that each year the Martins had scouts sent up looking for places to stay.  I don't what it is now, but he had a date when he took out the plugs.  He said the Martins don't like sparrows or dirty bird houses.

He must have been doing something right, because he had every room in his hotel full.   I don't know where they live now because the house is gone.  But we still have a lot of martins around and they set up on the power line and wait for the bugs to start flying in the late evening.

I want a teeshirt that says " I survived 2000, 6/6/6, 9/9/9, H1N1, Rapture! Bring it on 2012!" ;D

So was there any fall-out or back-stepping when no one raptured in May? I was so amused by the stupidity of it that I forgot to check. ;D
