I agree PH and especially your synopsis about Cam Newton. He showed that as gifted as he is, he needs to learn how to be a good sport and some humility. All he showed was he was a spoiled athlete.

The Denver Broncos say that Peyton Manning will announce his retirement from the NFL, as a player, Monday March 7, 2016.

Here's alink to an article that more or less confirms it without saying so:

I believe all of that is pure speculation on the part of the media and arm-chair head coaches across the nation.

He has intended to retire all along, and the first tell was when he wished the Pats coach well and his employer (NFL) leaked it by eavesdropping on what the two of them said. . . Then let it out. . .

Well it is official. Peyton Manning has retired as a player.

I got the opportunity to finally watch the entire press conference via the Denver Broncos web-site, and what a fascinating hour it was, with Elway and company singing his praises and telling a few private tales of the recruitment and final year. I saw nothing but genuine appreciation and respect from all that spoke; except the media.

Then when Peyton spoke, and persevered through the emotional storm that threatened to overtake him several times along the way, he handled it all by thanking everyone involved, all along the way, for helping him perfect his craft and supporting him even through the rough times.

Then the Q & A came and of course one media jackhole had to try to piss all over the party; but as usual Manning handled it with class and made an open and shut statement that ended with a Forrest Gump quote, "That's all I have to say about that."

I thought I'd be sad for him but I am not. He clearly has his priorities in order and I have no doubt he will land somewhere within football operations somewhere.

And given his statement of thanks included Jim Irsay, I would not entirely rule out the Colts organization as a possible landing spot for his next endeavor.  He has said many times publicly that he loves Indianapolis, it's fans, and the city itself; so it would not surprise me to see Peyton show up not just within the ring of honor at the luke, but on the payroll somewhere within the organization.

A Colts celebration is set for March 18th, so stay tuned. . . I'm betting he shows up and if they open it to the public, watch how downtown Indy gets mobbed with Colts fans and Peyton Manning fans.

He played a lot longer than 20 years. He played in High school, college, and the pros for 18; and who know how much and where before high school? I've seen home movies of him and Eli tossing the pigskin and wearing equipment before they were ever old enough to go to school.  That is a long stretch to be exposed to CTE inducing injury as well as the usual suspects of broken bones that attract arthritis like a magnet later in life.

He's at the bare minimum going to have a great big pain in the neck until his expiration date, that is for sure. Hopefully the good karma he has generously spread all along his path will come back to him ten-fold when he needs it most.

I don't want to run this into the ground, but after some very careful consideration I've determined the thing I admire the most about Peyton Manning.

Everybody knows about his records, his achievements, his highly admirable philanthropy; I myself have posted about those things many times herein. We've all read the stories and seen the spots; especially lately. I admire those things as well, but the one thing I admire the most about him is something that has slowly crept into the publics view over the last 5 years or so.

It was hardly noticeable to most people I am sure, but I saw it. And then I watched for it and there it was, time after time, and without fail at each and every milestone moment in the last 5 years. It was there post game at super bowl 50, when his very last game was won and he clutched the coveted prize. And it was clear to me that despite his self proclaimed reverence for the game, there is indeed something that means far more to him.

It was there yesterday as he made one of the hardest choices of his life on a world-wide stage. And I suspect it will always be there.

What is it?

His two children.

What man of his stature takes his children, his 5 year old twins, along for the ride at each and every milestone moment. What man unflinchingly lets the world see the fact his children are shy and unsure of themselves, but obviously absolutely trusting of their father? What man puts aside his personal preferences and openly and willingly shares the spotlight he has earned with his children all along the path?

What man has given 2 five year old twins experiences and memories that will last them a life-time?

Peyton Manning is a father, and it is very clear to me that he puts them first and foremost within his life.

I absolutely admire him for that. Family first. We all would love to be able to do that, but few of us can, or will.

Well done sir.

😊 I don't know the Mannings, but I know a couple people who do and they have both commented on how he and his wife love and treat their children.

Indianapolis will place a statue of Peyton Manning in front of the stadium that he built; Lucas Oil Stadium.

The number 18 will never be worn by another Colt ever again, as that number is retired.

So sayeth Jim Irsay.

He stopped short of inducting him into the ring of honor. . .

But Peyton himself gave a very long speech full of memories, appreciation, and love for the teams owner, his teammates, and most of all the fans; moved near tears as he spoke of the stands filled with jerseys, "the most of any NFL stadium, in my opinion", he said. . .

He also expressed a very strong opinion that the 10 year anniversary celebration of the Colts Super Bowl Victory, which he was at the helm for, be held during a game against the Bears and involve the attendance of all his teammates on that 2006=2007 Team; including him, and he promised to attend. Live. On television. And in front of a whole bunch of Colt and Manning fans that were watching intently. (Including yours truly via my work computer at lunch).

A lot of speculation around him taking an announcer/on air personality role is out there, and rumors of he and his family house hunting near Hartford Connecticut are out there. . . But he still owns a home in the Indianapolis area too. . . so?????

Reminiscent of the Chicago Bulls and that teams acknowledgment of Michael Jordan's contribution to that teams championships.

Nice to see him back in town. And nice to see, at least in public, that he and Irsay appear to be as close as they ever were. He even wore a horseshoe on the lapel of his suit and stated he will always be a Colt. Far more of a statement of allegiance than the one he made in Denver at his retirement announcement. And you could feel that he truly meant that.
