Sold their stuff to other people for probably even less money and without the option for getting it back.  What don't you understand about it's a business and the owners aren't in it for a hobby?  You are always looking at only one side of the picture.  You come across like you think everything they make over what they payed for the merchandise is pure profit and it isn't.  They also don't sell everything they buy immediately and sometimes they have to take a loss because they make a bad buy and can't sell the merchandise at all.

I understand business, that 50% to 80% is a ripoff for loaning money.  How much over head does it take to be able to charge that much and have a clear conscience.  But like you, someone has to do it.

That mark up is if they sell the item not the interest charged if the person reclaims it that's more like 5% to 10% over what they gave you if you reclaim it in a certain amount of time.  The mark up only applies if you sell the item to them or don't reclaim it in the period allotted if you pawn it.  If you pawn an item and they give you $50 for it and you leave it 2 months it takes $60 to get it back but if you don't come back for it they will sell it for anywhere from $125 to $200.  They start out at the higher dollar amount and reduce it each month they can't sell it. We used to get a lot of stuff from pawn shops 'cause you can get some pretty good deals if you watch but it's usually after they've had the item for a while.  Got ripped of a couple of times too 'cause I hadn't checked around and paid new price for a used item.  Now that irritated me and I didn't go back in there for a looooong time 'cause they wouldn't make it right.

It's not quite like that, there is a fee plus interest.  If you don't redeem it within the allotted time period, you can renew it at least once, then the pawn shop owns it.

Now how they sell those articles is a little different too.  Most  pawn shops operate on the 'pawn shop principle' - that's how it was named  - which is that someone will pay any exhorbitant price for something sooner or later.  They make such a killing doing that, they don't need to sell much to make a ridiculously fat profit and also why you don't see their inventory turn over that much.  They also use auction sites and like to have a network of shops where they can send merchandise from one town to another or from state to state - EZ Pawn for example.  It allows them to acquire not quite legitimate merchandise and move it out of an area/state where it might be to warm to dispose of over the counter.  ; )

One of the local pawn shops - and prolly the one you're referring to  - used to not like me very well when I had my business(es) open because I advertised I bought pawn tickets for merchandise I was interested in.  It cut down on that pawn shop's ability to acquire primo merchandise and they didn't like it.

Now what all that really indicates about our politics, IMHO, is not much if anything.

We no longer watch anything that's not an 'on air' channel because we became tired of paying for tons of crap we had no intention of watching so we dumped pay TV, put up a mast, a high end antenna, a rotor, and a booster all totaling less than $300 and receive an amazing amount of channels - with shows we actually watch - for no charge.  ; )

But they are still a business which needs to operate at a profit much like you did and if there wasn't a demand for that type of thing it wouldn't exist.  Why fault someone for trying to earn a living?  Don't know what kind of business you had so don't know how pawn tickets would have come into play but in Troll's way of thinking that would have made you part of the "rip off" scheme getting rich off of other peoples misfortune.

Business doesn't have to rape, pillage, and plunder in order to exist.

Maybe Troll might not see me in that light since I usually paid a small premium to the holder for the pawn ticket and then I also had to pay the redemption fees and interest on the ticket to the pawn shop in order to redeem the merchandise.

I do have a question though.  Don't you have to have an ID to show that you are the one who pawned the merchandise and didn't just happen to find the ticket?

But they still have overhead and cost involved in the business so it isn't all profit and you were turning around and selling the item for probably as much as the pawn shop would have not having paid much more than the pawn shop did in the first place.  Yes, the pawn shop made less on their initial investment but you are the one who ultimately made the larger profit from the item of the person who pawned it.  You did almost the same thing to the pawn shop owner that he did to the person who pawned the merchandise to begin with, took advantage of a situation for a profit.
