The reality is that the equipment ages and fails eventually.  The original route of the Keystone XL pipeline called for it to pass directly over the Ogallala Aquifer, one of the largest reserves of fresh water in the world which spans eight states, provides drinking water for two million people, and supports $20 billion in agriculture.
