The argument is about rights. Period. Would you deny the rights of an entire class of people based on sexual preference?

The same reason people like him denied the rights of interracial couples to marry for so long.

Why all this huge controversy over a lousy word?  Why can't it be called a civil union which comes with the same rights as a marriage, including divorce, and be done with it?  No, rather than do it the sane way some malcontent has to make a big deal out of it and want it called a marriage which it isn't as the word has always been applied.  Who gives a shit if they want to join together as one it's their business but why does it have to be called a marriage?

Because it's easier that way? All the laws referring to marriage would have to be changed to include civil unions because you just know someone would still insist on a marriage certificate because that's "the law." That would be a monumental task.

They have the same rights as everyone else does.  Other than redefining the institution of marriage, I have no problems with.  Each state should determine what is covered in marriages and domestic relationships.  In my opinion, this issue is being handled the wrong way.  As I said, why can't our laws be written as to what a domestic relationship should cover.
But, I got to admit, the institution of marriage has already been bastardized....so many people no longer place any value to it. I think that lost value is contributing to the decaying of our society.

Couldn't there be a kind of "blanket law" passed saying marriage/civil union. I would guess a civil union would need to be registered/recorded like marriage licenses are today along with divorce decrees. A lot of larger companies recognize civil unions/life partners/significant others concerning health insurance.

Agreed; why can't they use the same word to describe their vows as does everyone else?

The repugnants in Congress would say "NO" just like they do to everything else.

I don't know about that, The reason so many people say they are against gay marriage is the religious aspect of it and by making it a legal not religious thing should clear the way for them to approve it without compromising their religious feelings or those of their constituents.

I would have no problems what-so-ever, passing a bill supporting domestic partnerships or civil unions.  Principals DO matter.  Redefining a word to meet a political acheivement is wrong.

And your saying "They have the same rights as everyone else does." is just as wrong.

Why because some attorney needs to make a buck?  It's sheer stupidity and thinking like that which makes it so difficult to do anything.  No matter what happens someone is going to have their panties tied in a knot because they're offended.  This political correctness and BS wanting things changed is getting out of hand big time.  You can't do or say anything anymore without "offending" someone.  Ya, I know I went off into a rant but this craziness going on can tend to do that to a person.
