As a confirmed geezer, it will come as no surprise to anyone that I keep my truck's radio tuned to one of the local "oldies" stations (50's, 60's, and some 70's music). As a rule, that guarantees me a pretty eclectic mix of songs I grew up with, and still enjoy today. But life seems to want to ensure that I don't overdose on my listening pleasure, so the DJ's, if they still call them that, throw in a song from time to time that's sure to evoke a disgusted snort from this old curmudgeon. I know, some of you may LOVE some of these nauseating ditties, but these are some songs likely to have me reaching for the radio dial:

#4: "In the Summertime", Mungo Jerry, 1970. Brain-rotting tripe.

#3: "The Night Chicago Died", Paper Lace, 1974. Pi$$ poor lyrics in a "bubble gum" song based on a preposterous non-event. An all-out shooting war between the Chicago Police and Al Capone's gunmen? "About a hundred cops... dead"? Hell, even the Great Fire and decades of crooked politicos couldn't kill that burg.

#2: "In the Year 2525", Zager & Evans, 1969. A decent musical score ruined by lyrics obviously written by someone's unbalanced 11-year-old kid. On crack.
"Yeah, yeah, whatever. As long as the words rhyme."

#1: "They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa", Napoleon IV, 1966. The musical equivalent of fingernails on a chalkboard.

Feel free to throw a few logs of your own on the fire.

When Boy George asked, "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?", I think the resounding answer was "Oh yeah, I really do."
