Chickens.   A chicken has a craw, believe that stones end up there when they are pecking at the ground for their feed, and they get a small stone or pebble instead. But don't quote me, I was only raised up around the chickens, I didn't study them. ;)

Yep, Pariann--a "craw" is the same thing as a crop or gizzard.
Birds don't pick up gravel by accident, though---it's purposefull because they need them to grind up the seeds etc. that they feed on.
      They don't have gastric juices like we do, so the gizzard repeatedly clenches the gravel and grain together to aid in digestion.
That's one of the reasons why ice storms that leave a thick and long-lasting covering on the ground are so devastating to bird populations. Even if they can get to a food source, they can literally starve with a full belly, as it were.
       There ya go--that info and .89 and you're in the coffee business.

I think I've shared this before but I'll do it again. . .    When I was still married to my husband, being an officer's wife I attended a lot of functions where a covered dish was necessary.  So I had purchased some 'high speed' pyrex dishes with handy blue covers.   After on holiday gathering, I realized after I was in my car and leaving the parking lot, that I had forgotten my empty dish.    Then I spotted a group just leaving the building and thought I'd sucker on of them into running back in and getting it for me.  So, I roll down my window and asked if someone wouldn't mind running back in and grabbing my playtex casserole.    After an awkward silence, I realized what I had said.
