Title: 50 Shades of Crap
Post by: Sandy Eggo on February 15, 2015, 09:07:18 PM
I'm really having a difficult time with this movie. My problem has nothing to do with moral outrage. I couldn't give a fat rat's ass if someone enjoys being tied up and beaten. I couldn't even care if they also enjoy people knowing that's what they enjoy.

What bothers me is the number of women, that I respect and have believed to be intelligent who think this movie is romantic. The number of women I know who look at this upgraded adult version of Cinderella and talk about wanting to switch places with the female lead.

What?!?

They're saying that they'd sell their independence to the highest bidder. Yet, they don't see it that way. They see it as gaining the man of their dreams.

What?!?

The man of your dreams is an abusive control freak? or maybe that doesn't matter because he's rich? The same man, poor, treating a woman the same way, would be labeled an abuser and these same women would be advising their "sister" to get out of that relationship.

I think I feel betrayed. Betrayed by women that I've admired who turn out to be shallow.

Trying to get through this time of "intelligent" conversation about this book series and movie is proving to be very trying indeed. I'm using my "mental vacation" technique to keep quiet avoid alienating people that I've called friends (even though I do see them differently now).

The last time I felt this strongly about a movie was "Titanic". No, "Titanic" is NOT a romantic movie. How can anyone get past the fact that people died because they were poor to give a shit what Jack and what's-her-name did? That's not romance.

Anyway, this article is a pretty good read to take my thoughts a step farther:

I kind of figured that movie would suck and it looks like I was right.

I agree that too many young women will think that is what love is. I have no desire to read the books or see the movie. I have been told that it is not about abuse and I said that to me it is, anytime you have control, emotional and mental you have abuse. But that is just me!

I read the books. I don't normally read "romance" but our local library refused to carry them so I read them on principle. I'll choose what's appropriate not a morally righteous librarian. They are typical of the romance genre in that they're poorly written, juvenile vocabulary and fairly predictable plot. Young woman pretending to be fiercly independent begrudgenly falls in love. Seriously same old song and dance.

I give young women a pass because they don't have the life experience to know that this genre is written to the intellect level of a 12 year old. Anyone older than that should have the mental ability to dismiss it for what it is. Junk.

I'm bothered that women who are older, who know better, who have lived strong and independent lives are so easily lured into something so shallow. Now they want to have "intellectual" discussions about it. Thre is ZERO intellect involved with this series.

Sandy, from what I have learned about this book and movie, I can totally see where you are coming from.  It seemed to me like it is a vicious slam against any woman with a brain.

I think The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, would have more of an opportunity for an intellectual discussion....

At least it isn't as hateful toward women as The Bible.

I don't see the humor in old people making love. I'm getting up there myself. On a related subject, one of my friends recently retired and told me "The great thing about retirement is that my lovemaking isn't restricted to the weekend. This year I get to have sex on a Tuesday."

Ya know, this isn't War and Peace, it is a soft porn movie based on a romance novel, that is going make someone a boat load of money, or should I say, more money.  I don't think any huge social statements were intended, it just happen to add a little kink to the otherwise bland world of bodice rippers.  Mommy porn as I heard it called.  The white night that ends up with this fair maiden just happens to like whips and chains, as does she.

Would the uproar be as loud if the roles were reversed?

I agree Mr442, it's the level of importance or significance otherwise intelligent women have given it that I find annoying. Not the subject matter.

Oh and on role reversal, there was a dominatrix that introduced Mr. Grey to his sexual proclivities. His sub,  the lead female, is convinced that she took advantage of Grey and it was abuse. She is just as outraged as the bible thumpers are over this whole story. It's a sub theme throughout the book.

A University of Illinois Chicago student faces charges after he was accused of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old female student during what he said was a "50 Shades of Grey" re-enactment.

A judge set 19-year-old Mohammad Hossain's bail at $500,000 Monday after he was charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault stemming from an incident over the weekend.

Prosecutors say that around 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Hossain went to his dorm room with a woman. Once inside, he allegedly asked her to remove her clothing, which she did, keeping on her bra and underwear. The pair then began to engage in sexual activities reminiscent of those found in the "Fifty Shades of Grey" books and movie.
