Title: EARTHQUAKES 2013
Post by: Palehorse on January 05, 2013, 11:49:42 AM
A tsunami warning was canceled early Saturday for portions of British Columbia, Canada, and southeastern Alaska.

The warning was issued following a 7.5-magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Alaska 63 miles west of Craig, a town on Prince of Wales Island, and 208 miles south of the capital of Juneau.

An 8.0-magnitude earthquake struck off the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific on Wednesday, triggering a tsunami that killed five people.

You dump crap from your convoluted thought process wherever you go, without respecting the thread.

I have yet to see you post an original thought, yet you criticize posters who have given hours of thought to the thousands of posts on this forum.

You seem to think you can just blithely make a comment and we are to take it as carved in stone.

The Sea of Okhotsk is an arm of the Pacific formed by the Kamchatka peninsula, a zone of legendary seismic activity. An earthquake struck about 250 miles northwest of the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, and registered either 8.0 (according to Russian monitors) or 8.2 (say the Americans) on the Richter scale. It was reported to have occurred 375 miles under the sea bed, which could account for its being felt so far away.

It was felt in Moscow!  :spooked:

Moscow is 4,000 miles from the epicenter. That's like an earthquake in Anchorage being felt in Miami.  :spooked:

Three dozen earthquakes over the past week in central Arkansas shook shelves, rattled nerves and prompted speculation about their cause.
"Are they being being triggered or are they natural? That's something we don't know," Arkansas Geological Survey scientist Scott Ausbrook said Sunday.
The chances of so many temblors in the region in such a short time are "Powerball kind of odds," Ausbrook said. "What was unusual was to have four different areas in the state to be active in the same week."
More than two dozen quakes recorded since Wednesday have been centered north of Morrilton, Arkansas. The strongest, on Wednesday and Thursday nights, had reported magnitudes of 3.5 and 3.4.

Disturbing how a lot of obscure fault lines are rumbling but very little out of the ordinary coming from the New Madrid Fault line.

Going on 201 years since it's last shaker in 1812.

This was the last in a series of four of these that started on 12/16/1811 at 2:15 am, and averaged between 7.0 and 8.6 in magnitude:

February 7, 1812, 0945 UTC (4:45 a.m.); (M ~7.4 – 8.6) epicenter near New Madrid, Missouri. New Madrid was destroyed. At St. Louis, Missouri, many houses were severely damaged, and their chimneys were toppled. This shock was definitively attributed to the Reelfoot Fault by Johnston and Schweig. It was uplift along this reverse fault segment, in this event, that created waterfalls on the Mississippi River, disrupted the Mississippi River at Kentucky Bend, created a wave that propagated upstream and caused the formation of Reelfoot Lake.

The earthquakes were felt as far away as New York City and Boston, Massachusetts, where ground motion caused church bells to ring.

Hundreds of aftershocks followed over a period of several years. Aftershocks strong enough to be felt occurred until the year 1817. The largest earthquakes to have occurred since then were on January 4, 1843, and October 31, 1895, with magnitude estimates of 6.0 and 6.6 respectively.

For the second time in less than a month, a small earthquake jangled nerves early Sunday when it struck on the west side of Los Angeles. No damage or injuries were reported.

The quake measured 3.9 on the Richter Scale and was centered near the communities of View Park and Windsor Hills, adjoining neighborhoods in the Baldwin Hills, a mostly unincorporated area near Inglewood and Culver City, Calif., the U.S. Geological Service reported. It struck at 4:07 a.m. PT.

I was thinking more along the lines of what happened on 2/7/1812 near island 10 of the Mississippi River near the New Madrid fault line. A severe thrust uplift caused the river to flow in reverse for several hours.

It has happened twice that I am aware of in that exact spot, once in 1811 and then again in 1812.  :spooked:

That would take some MAJOR forces to drive a river as large as the Mississippi backwards.

Here's a page that illustrates what took place back then: http://www.showme.net/~fkeller/quake/mississippi_river_ran_backward.htm (http://www.showme.net/~fkeller/quake/mississippi_river_ran_backward.htm)

And you did.

TMI!!!!

(and TMI does not stand from Too Much Information )

Yep.  Three Mile Island!  Not far from where I live.  TMI had the partial meltdown when I was a kid.  My parents sent my older brother and I to my aunt and uncle's home about 30 miles away and over the mountain.  I remember sitting in school and seeing parents come in and pull their children out. My parents waited until we got home and then drove us to my aunt's place.  Mom and dad were worried about looters and decided to stay at the house and planned to get out if it was going to get worse.  I never realized how serious the situation was until I was older; my parents wouldn't tell us much so we wouldn't worry.

The covert preparations being made within government would have given most of the public the drizzles if they had known. . .

Can you give examples? Or if, like my son would tell me when I asked a 'sensitive' question, I could tell you but then I would have to kill you. 😊 PH, I am just curious, not challenging your statement.

No can do. The oath doesn't stop once you leave Uncle Sam's employ. . .  :(

There's a lot of truth to that saying your son uses. . .

I was in the area one time and took the following pictures.  Here is the Number 2 reactor and the eerie cooling towers which are no longer in use.

That's right along the Cascadia Subduction Zone that one day is going to deliver a disastrous quake.

It looks like this isn't likely to happen at least for another 50 years at best according to "experts".....I actually, don't believe they have a clue as to when these can happen..but

I think Exterminator posted this a bit ago, and I had already read it at the time, but I think it's worth posting again.  It's quite a compelling read.  I especially like the last line where the author is in Cannon Beach, Oregon, and he writes this:

All day long, just out of sight, the ocean rises up and collapses, spilling foamy overlapping ovals onto the shore. Eighty miles farther out, ten thousand feet below the surface of the sea, the hand of a geological clock is somewhere in its slow sweep. All across the region, seismologists are looking at their watches, wondering how long we have, and what we will do, before geological time catches up to our own.  :spooked:

That is kind of funny, I just saw this article as I was googling this this morning.  I didn't read it all, but I was skimming through it.

A magnitude-7.8 earthquake hit close to the Solomon Islands early Friday, forecasters said.

The earthquake hit less than 30 kilometers (19 miles) off the island of Makira -- and 70 kilometers (43 miles) southwest of the island's city of Kirakira -- about 4:38 a.m. local time Friday (12:38 p.m. ET Thursday), the US Geological Survey said.

My thinking might be wrong, but if it didn't hurt anyone else and I and wife and cat wasn't home.  I think I would like for my house to be shaken off it's foundation.  I think I would like a new $220.000 house with new furniture.
