Title: P!ss and Moan Time
Post by: Mr442 on March 05, 2010, 07:57:13 AM
Damned salt on the roads.  It;s suppose to be warmer, but I am not getting the bike out until we have a couple of rains to wash it away.

I had the same thought today. I had to run out to fetch a prescription and got a bad case of wanting to ride by the time I got to the truck door. . .

I have a feeling we're going to see a lot of rain here shortly. . .

I kept the bike in the garage Saturday, in spite of the nice weather.

Saturday evening when the humidity came up, the roads started getting dark as the salt absorbed the moisture in the air.  There was a lot of salt still out there.

The rain Sunday, today, and the rest of the week should take care of problem.

DST starts this weekend   Just when we were getting daylight in the mornings, we will artificially go backwards and get up earlier.  Mitch needs to pull his head out of his short little ass and stop this BS.  Hell, the entire US needs to top this BS too.

Don't blame Mitch, I don't like it either, but at least NOW, we are in sync with the rest of the nation....instead of bouncing from central to eastern....

I like the extra hour in the evenings now....I wish it would just stay that way for good.

If everyone else jumped off a cliff, would........................

Just because the rest of the country was screwed up, there was ano good reason for us to follow.  The rest should have stopped adjusting their clocks.  I still have the exact same amout of useable daylight in the evenings, Sunday through Thursday.
And I lose an hour on each of those mornings.

I used to bicycle to work a couple times a week in the summer, but not since we started DST.  Too damn dark to safely ride then.
I have to leave by 6 AM to get there on time.  Before DST it was just getting light as I left, but now it's still dark.  I've got lights, but the common sense tells me to wait a while until it gets lighter out.

well I can say that the business I have worked for has been effected because of the former way of conducting our time....many business' outside of Indiana had a difficult time, trying to figure out WHAT time it actually IS in Indiana....we had shipping deadlines NOT meant because of other companies thinking they had another hour to conduct it's business, when in acutality they did not...it may seem miniscule to some, but it was a common problem we had to face...that has been eliminated now....we are EASTERN time now, the same as NY....

and I LOVE having an extra hour in the evening to do things around the house....even though I despise it come fall when they take it away...

I'm with you on this one 442. I hated it when I lived in Illinois and loved the fact that Indiana didn't do it. Now Mitch had to be like everybody else and it sucks like it always did. There are ZERO benefits to this, and I couldn't have said it any better myself. Clock games. . . like we don't have anything more important to do than screw around with the time every spring and fall. . .

The old arguments that started all this crap are now no longer applicable. Stop it and get real why don't we?!

I am the medical rep/POA for my elderly aunt.  Glad to help her out and do what needs doing.  Yesterday she had a Dr. appointment and all went well.  Until it came time for her to return to the nursing home.  I called Yellow Cab, and told them she was ready to be picked up.  They transport her in her electric scooter, via a wheelchair van.  We have waited as long as 1 hour, but yesterday I almost called the Guinness folks.  2 hours and 15 minutes from the time I initialy called!!!  Luckily there was a snack bar on the first floor of the building we were in, so I could get her some lunch.  YC's slow response caused her to miss lunch at the nursing home, the one day they actually had someting she was looking forward to eating.

YC had the excuse that one of ther van drivers called in sick, so they were down to two vans serving the Terre Haute area..  Why someone from management couldn't/wouldn't jump in and drive was beyond me.  If you are going run that type of operation, then there should be backups available in times like this.  When the driver finally showed up, he applogized and told me they were running about 50 fares behind for the vans.  UN-F-ing_believeable.

I can't get her in and out of the truck, and don't think I really need to buy another car just for this purpose, but I'm starting to wonder.

Here in the Devil's Playground there is a handicapped-equipped Mets (Metropolitan Evansville Transit System) bus. It's about the size of a "short bus" in the school system, and has a wheelchair lift and a "Helper" (not sure about the requirements for the job) on board at all times. To use it, you call and give the dispatcher an address and time. I've seen this bus all over town, at all times of day or night.

Okay, I can hear you saying, what's the difference between this and and Mr442's Yellow Wheelchair Van? I don't know what the Terre Haute van costs to ride, but the METS bus costs the same as any other METS bus -- one lousy buck.

Pretty good deal.

The Yellow Cab/Trans Care bus is a short bus too, but they are contracted through the nursing home to provide transportation for the nursing home patients.

I spoke with the administrator yesterday and laid out my complaints, whe assured me she would look into it.  Before she had a chance to do anything, the owner of the local Yellow Cab came in to the nursing home on a good will visit.  He got his ear full from the administartor, and my aunt.  He left, assuring everyone that things would change immediately.  We will see how that goes today, as my aunt has chemo in a few hours.  The admiinistrator did say, that when there were problems in the past, the owner would take care of things very quickly.

Roadkill and DST, what a dangerous combination.  Riding to work in the dark, thanks to the time change, and I encounter a large mass of fresh meat, AKA roadkill, all over the highway.  The bad part was, I was on a two lane highway, meeting another vehicle, so my sight distance was severely limited due to the oncoming car lights.  Luckily I was able to swereve a small amount and miss the main portion of the remains.  Had I hit it, the results would not have been good.  It seemed to be too large to be a deer, so I am wondering if a calf got out and was hit.  Whatever it was, it was a huge mess, and it was laying in the left hand tire track.

Got up at 0330 hrs this morning, to go into a 0500 safety meeting.  I was the only one there   The department this applies to, had an incident yesterday, so they obviously cancelled the meeting, but failed to let me know.  This happens about once per year.

So there I was at 0515 heading back to the house for some breakfast and a nap.  Could have stayed here and got in some extra time, but I was so pissed, going home for a while seemed like a better idea.  I do feel better for it.

That is a huge danger and one that always haunts me in the darkness while riding. We have a road nearby that I call roadkill road, (The site of the groundhog incident), and I stay off it during darkness for this very reason!

Glad you were able to navigate it safely.  8) The potential for that tohave gone the other way just makes me shudder!  :spooked:

Motherf*****!!!!  I think I have a kidney stone.  I go to the Doctor later this morning to see what is going on, and what we can do about it.  Been hurting since Wednesday afternoon, and it has not let up one bit.  Yes, I'm getting cranky.

Drink tons of water and take whatever drugs the docs give you. I hate to say this but pretty much the treatments out there  only address passing the damned thing. They'll give you something for the pain and perhaps to stimulate urine production, but unless it (or they) is/are large enough to use ultrasonic waves to break them up, you're going to have to pass them/it.

Hurts like hell I know. It has dropped me a time or two, (Really, down to the ground I went the pain was so severe), before I learned to drink water all the time.

Good news and bad news.  It wasn't a kidney stone, but it was diverticulosis.  Dr. said it can have similar pain symptoms as a kidney stone, so I ended up getting a CT scan and x-ray to figure it out.  Got some nasty pills to take and the pain has pretty much subsided.  I had a colonoscopy on Monday, and knew I had some diverticula that had never bothered me.  According to the Doc, the colonoscopy likely triggered a bout of the diverticulosis.

I almost put this in the other spot, and a follow up may end up there.

I have just been told that my position is going away in a few months.  No deadline yet, and no early retirement package offered yet either.  This was an early warning from my boss, so I could have extra time to make plans.  I knew when I moved into this spot 15 years ago that it was temporary at best, so all is not doom and gloom.  A support position is always on the bubble.  Now I wait and see if a package is offered at a later date, when I am given a deadline.  Based on past history with this company, it is very likely.  If they don't, I may have to tighten my belt a tad and jump into retirement.  The only jobs open are ones in production, back on shift work, and there ain't no way in cowboy hell that I am going back to shift work.  Today marks the end of my 37th year, so the timing is ironic.

I spoke with my HR rep today, and he told me how the re-allocation process works.  What it boils down to, once I receive my notice, I will have 3 months to find a position, or I will be out the door.  However, if I don't apply for any positions, and just ride it out. I can take my retirement and get 18 months of severance along with it.   ;D

And that is why I almost put this in the other thread with happy things.

     deer!!

Took out Bambi yesterday evening with the truck.  Then Bambi took out my grille, which punctured my air conditioner condenser.  The bumper is bent a little as well, but no other damage.  I guess I should be glad I wasn't on the bike, or it would have been nasty.  Under normal conditions I should have been able to stop, but the rain on a very slick US 36 kept me from doing so.  Two years ago in an attempt to save money, the highway boys did a chip and seal.  I lost a windshield on the other truck then due to all the loose rocks.  No problem with loose rocks now, as the only thing left is the seal, and it is slicker than snot when it rains.  I was stomping the brake pedal as soon as I saw the deer, but the truck was not stopping as quick as it should have been.  I did hear the ABS system making all of it's usual noises, just like when you are on ice.

So all of you hunters, please go out and shoot every one of these forest rats you see.

At one time I had a little round thing on the fender of my car that was supposed to be a deer deterrent.  I have no idea how it worked or if you would even be able to find something on that order now.  I always wondered if it emitted a noise when driving via wind through the cylinder that maybe scared the deer off or something. Might be worth checking into.

Yeah, those things emit a high squeal that is well above human hearing. I have had several old time Wisconsin folks tell me that up there they actually seem to attract the deer instead of scare them. I took them off my truck once I realized that none of the vehicles of the "locals" had a set on them. . .

I really don't know if they work or not. . .

Soooo are you having a cookout, making chili, or what?

Just kidding...in Maryland, deers were a constant issue. In California it's the coyotes, but they won't do the damage a deer will. In Kansas, it was buffalo. I'm very glad that I never hit one of those beasts. They'd probably shake a car off like a gnat.

Sorry you're having such bad luck with the things.

I tried a set of deer whistles once, and let me tell you, I spent a lot of time standing on the brakes.  It seemed like deer were attracted to that truck.  One fell off, so I removed the other one, and the deer quit running out in front of me.

If I had given up, based on a few close calls, I'd have given up back in 1979 when I started riding.  I quickly learned to expect drivers to do stupid things, and keep myself prepared.  The only time I did give it up for a while, was due to my own inattention.

And even then, it wasn't so much what happened, but the fact that I was not enjoying riding.  The close call most likely figured in, but it was a couple months after that I sold the Harley.  A few years later when I purchased the aged Hondamatic, I found joy in riding, that I had never experienced before.  Now after upgrading from the 'matic to the beemer, and finally the Goldwing, I find myself thoroughly enjoying myself each and every time I am on two wheels.

I really cannot explain what is so different now, other than the fact that motorcyling for me is about the ride, and little else.  I may have been too concerned with the trappings of motorcyling, to actually enjoy what I was doing.

A beautiful day today, one that would be great for a M/C ride, but due to my need to keep my vacation hours earned vs. taken in check, I came to work.  I have not received my official re-allocation notice yet, so I have to watch how much vacation I take, as I don't want to have to pay back the company for any hours taken over what I have earned.  I'd rather them own me when the time comes.  So here I sit, on what is looking to be a great day to ride.

Yeah I know, should be grateful I have  job, I'll have plenty of time for riding in the near future, and any other platitudes to salve the wounds, but that ain't the point. >:(

Close call yesterday on the way home.  Hit the ramp from the 4 lane to the two lane as usual.  It does a 180 to take me to the road below.  Just past mid point of the curve, I see what appears to be spilled diesel fuel right in my path.  I had the 'wing leaned over pretty hard, and was only able to get it partway back to upright before I was in it.  The bike did a little slip and slide to the left, then all was good again.  Luckily the spill was small, and I had some room to manuver. between the spill and a guard rail.

I wish folks would secure their fuel caps better to prevent fuel from sloshing out in a turn.

That's some scary crap there. I was riding 135 in Brown county, and came to a hairpin curve with sand all over my line of travel. The bike fishtailed right, toward the shoulder and I downshifted and cracked the throttle which brought me right out of it. . . But not before it scared the hell out of me!  :spooked:

Got the floor fixed.  Replaced a 24 X 32 section, new flange for the toilet to sit on, and mucho swearing and sweating, bit I got the damn thing done.  Had to call son #2 to come over and help me reset the crapper, so I didn't screw up the new wax ring.  I also added a shut off valve for the water supply.  Damn floor was 1.5 inches thick , so I ended up doing some layering of OSB to get it where I needed it.  Going to lay some tile in there in a week or so and make it all plum purdyful

The reason I ask, about two years ago I sold my dad's house.  He had really keep it up.  But being 91 when he passed he had let a few small thing get away from him.

The person who appraised it for us said, when I asked him about fixing it up.  He said that it would be a waste of money and my time to do it.

We are freshening up the bathroom, to make it more appealing to the eye.  Last time anything was done, was back in the late 50's, and it needed some changes.  The Marlite paneling just did not cut it any more.  While preparing the floor for a quick upgrade as well, I discovered the floor was rotted under the toilet.  Turns out the flange had rusted out, and water was getting to the wood every time we flushed.  The few dollars I spend now, will make a huge difference when it comes time to sell.  That whole initial impression thing you know.

We, OK I, am still on the fence for kitchen upgrades.  The wife wants to replace the counter tops, but we really should replace the cabinets too, so I don't know where that will lead.  There are some Amish cabinet outlets not too far away, where some good deals can be found, so I may have to check it out.

Truthfully, we have spent too much time getting along with what was here, instead of upgrading things as we went along.  It was all serviceable as it was, just dated as hell and showing wear.  To make a decent sale, some things need attention.  Doing it myself saves a lot of money, and I do have the time.

You need to get a good appraiser to tell you what your house is worth.  Ask him about the repairs you want to make and if their worth the work and money.  I think you might be suprised what your house is worth.  It will probably scare you.

And don't do what some of my fellow workers did, they sold their paid off houses and bought a new one with house payments and then they got sick and the payments were to much.  Think about it.

We have already had it appraised and discussed things with a Realtor, so I know where I am heading with limited upgrades.  I'm not dumping a lot of money in it, mainly a lot of my time, but I work slow when it comes to home repair.

Selling and moving is going/needs to happen, so continuing house payments are in my future.  But I'm not buying the Taj-Mahal either.  Taking advantage of low interest rated to keep payments low.

Motherf*****!!!!  I think I have a kidney stone.  I go to the Doctor later this morning to see what is going on, and what we can do about it.  Been hurting since Wednesday afternoon, and it has not let up one bit.  Yes, I'm getting cranky.

Let a old man give you a hint on how to get medical help.  I had two doctors tell me this.  Go to emergency and tell you are in pain to the point of passing out and swoon a little bit.  If it hurting make your mind think it killing you and put on an act.  You will get help.  Kidney stones are like a leak in a pipe, they are going to get worse.  I had a friend to had attack in the middle of the night.  He had to go to emergency.  He told me, he thought it worse than his wife having a baby.  It hurt so bad.

I've been to emergency three times, one time cutting my finger with a chainsaw.  They fiddled fucked around until I stated screaming I wanted some damn help.  But the last time I had fell and really hurt my back, this one day it was hurting so bad the pain was running down my arms.  I walked into emergency and told them I thought I might be having a heart attack.

I felt a pressure against the back of my legs, it was a nurse with a wheel chair and off we went she was almost runninng into the room we went,  in came 4 nurses who started working of me.  A minute later in came the doctor and they checked me from head to toe.

They found no heart problems, but the doctor told me anytime you think your having a heart problem come to emergency it could save your life.  They gave me muscle relaxents and painkillers  and I got better right away.

If you have pain and need a doctor go to emergency.  The Illegals do and it works.

There is a primer I think it's call Kile.  I will prevent bleed through if you have a spot on a wall that will not take paint.  But I found out that covering a light color with a dark color is pretty easy.  Let it dry a little bit and touch it up with some more  paint.

But covering a dark color with a light color is hard.  Just count on two coats.  If you paint with primer first, you still are painting with two coats.  Also there are paints that have primer in them.

But I did find out one thing, cheap paints are not a good bargain and the last paint I bought from Lowes, I was not happy with.  Good luck.

Three coats did the trick, now I have started on the other half of the room.  Moved furniture and painted, then moved it all again to get to the other half.  Only have to move some of it back this time.  I am painting the walls a very neutral off white, over a nice shade of dark green.

Should be able to get a second coat on this afternoon.  Didn't want to bother with primer, since all it would have likely done is eliminate one coat of paint.  No gain there as i still would have been smearing paint three times.  Got to get some more paint after lunch.

   !@#$%&*!!!! water leaks!!!!!!!!!!
Got a call last week from the kind folks at the Dana water dept.  I had used 15,000 gallons of water, with nobody at home!  The meter was turning as they stood there, so they shut the water off.  I went down last Friday to find and fix the leak, and finally got it finished on Sunday.  Someone previous to me had T'd into the main line between the meter and the house to install an outdoor hydrant.  Sure enough, one of the fittings had sprung a leak under the ground.

I tried digging it out by hand, but finally gave up and called in a back hoe to dig a decent hole I could get down into and work.  After a few trips to the store for parts and pieces, I eventually I had it repaired.  I had to do some "adjusting" to get things to fit right and not leak.  It took some time, but it should be good for many years to come, or at least until I get it sold.

We spent a couple more days there doing some things that needed done.  Got rid of the dog door in the porch wall, and closed up the hole.  Replaced a piece of vinyl fascia on the garage that had blown off last summer, while I had some help.  Did some more sorting and hauled off another load of trash (aka, stuff we had kept too damn long)

All in all we had a fairly productive few days, but I sure hated that leak.

After being in the water condition business and have had schooling on the water table and how water percolates down though the various rock strata.  Nothing that you put on your lawn will get in you well, unless your well has not been properly sealed in.

If your well has not been installed right, you are more indangered from your septic tank and animal waste and ecoli bacteria.  As far as weed killer getting into you well, you have to worry about the farmers miles away and what herbicides they are putting on their fields.  Their chemicals are really polluting our waters, our wells and streams and lakes.

I think it's to late to stop it, but I wouldn't be surprised that some day all of the people with wells and towns and cities will have to have OR (reverse osmosis) systems on their wells.

Hey what is the best water softner I can get?.....Are those salt free devices that are being advertised any good?

Most of all of the brand name water softeners are good.  All of the softening resin inside of them is the same chemical mix.  The last time I check they were only 4 companies that made the special plastic resin beads.  The resin and salt is what softens the water, the rest of it is a valve and a couple of plastic tanks.

But the main thing I think is important is getting the best price.  SHOP around.  Culligan is good but is way way over priced, somebody has to pay for all of that advertising, the owner, the service manager, the secretary, the salesman who makes a good commission for selling it and the service man who installs it.

Look for a local plumbing company that has been around for a good time and is well recommended.  I don't care what water softener you buy they all will have some problems with the timer motor or the valve, the resin bead are usually a life time thing.  Then the most important is having a good company with good service someone who know how to work on the softener they sell and  the parts in stock to fix them.

Also I wouldn't by one that is all electronic.  I just can't see, is salt, water, water vapor and electronics that you put under one cover on one water softener.  The only thing these electronic wizards will tell the owner is, Your Out of Salt or Call for Service.  the only thing on my units had was one electric motor.  The head was made by Auto-Toll.

I sold over 150 softeners at my full time job Ford Motor and had no unhappy customers.  You know what would have happen if is sold bad units to my fellow workers.  :hanged:

The electric units that use magnets, electricity are all a fraud, some states have banned selling them.  If they worked these units would use to soften the water on big boilers.  They claim to keep the hardness in suspension and will not stick to your  pipes or water heater.  I don't know about that.  But I do know they don't remove the hardness (limestone) Iron from you water.  The frauds will not soften  your water.

Soft water will cut the soap in your washer over 50%.  Give you a great shave, great for washing your hair and shower.  Make  your clothes last longer and your plumbing, your dish washer, your water heater last longer.  The only thing you can't do is water your plants or lawn with it.  it's to expensive and will kill the plants slowly.  But, I wouldn't get rid of mine just because of the wonderful shower and shave I get.

So Henery, shop and if you have any question post me and I tell you what I think.  I haven't sold any water softeners for the last 4 years, except some manual I put together for the RV trailers up at my campground.  You don't need a manual for you trailer do you?   I have always believed that when you bought one of my softeners you bought me and my service.  Good Luck.  I will say if you don't have a softener, your wife will love it and so will you.

What is up with the evil alliance between UPS and USPS?  Earlier this year I ordered an item on line, paid for it, and waited for delivery.  After a while I check on-line tracking and see a statement that I had refused delivery, so the item was returned to the vendor.  UPS had handed the item off to USPS (the post office) for final delivery.  The damn package never made it out of one of the Indy post offices, they just sent it back!

This morning I go on-line to check on another order and see that UPS has handed it off to USPS, and USPS claims they were unable to deliver, so they left a notice for me.  Let me tell you, there was no such attempt made, nor was there any notice left.  I go to the local post office to see what the hell is going on, but they were unable to tell me anything, because all rural mail delivery for Jamestown now comes through Brownsburg.  The girl did give the Brownsburg phone number, so I called them and explained what had happened so far.  The lady there did call the carrier and confirm the package was in his vehicle, and would be delivered today.

Now I sit and wait.

Hum, wonder if Fed Ex is doing that too 'cause I ordered something for mom online and it shipped Fed Ex and mom said USPS delivered it.

Apparently FedEx and UPS are so overwhelmed with packages this time of year, that they farm out their work to the USPS, who needs the work. . .

And I can understand WHY they need the work   There are better choices for package delivery than USPS.

I did get the package yesterday BTW.

I can't count the times I've had my meds delivered by them, yet I paid extra to have fedex deliver them. It really pisses me off. . .
