A good friend of mine just sold his Harley because of this rain and the idiots who text while driving. He said he has had so many close calls this year he just doesn't want to risk it any longer; and it rains every time he has plans for a ride. . .

Sounds like he was ready for a change.  Sometimes you need to step away.

  :rant:deer!!!

I hit another deer a little bit ago, a little spotted fawn.  I tried within reason to miss it, but it was determined to die.  Luckily for me, no damage to the truck.  2 deer in 18 days WTF????????

At one time I had a little round thing on the fender of my car that was supposed to be a deer deterrent.  I have no idea how it worked or if you would even be able to find something on that order now.  I always wondered if it emitted a noise when driving via wind through the cylinder that maybe scared the deer off or something. Might be worth checking into.

Yeah, those things emit a high squeal that is well above human hearing. I have had several old time Wisconsin folks tell me that up there they actually seem to attract the deer instead of scare them. I took them off my truck once I realized that none of the vehicles of the "locals" had a set on them. . .

I really don't know if they work or not. . .

Here's a link to the newest version though:

Soooo are you having a cookout, making chili, or what?

Just kidding...in Maryland, deers were a constant issue. In California it's the coyotes, but they won't do the damage a deer will. In Kansas, it was buffalo. I'm very glad that I never hit one of those beasts. They'd probably shake a car off like a gnat.

Sorry you're having such bad luck with the things.

I tried a set of deer whistles once, and let me tell you, I spent a lot of time standing on the brakes.  It seemed like deer were attracted to that truck.  One fell off, so I removed the other one, and the deer quit running out in front of me.

Maybe the ones that were on my car had been disabled or I was just lucky.

That's why I gave mine up, really liked it.  But 3 close calls of people pulling out in front of me and saying they were sorry, but they just didn't see me.  And me with that big headlight turned on plus blowing the horn.

Mr442

If I had given up, based on a few close calls, I'd have given up back in 1979 when I started riding.  I quickly learned to expect drivers to do stupid things, and keep myself prepared.  The only time I did give it up for a while, was due to my own inattention.

And even then, it wasn't so much what happened, but the fact that I was not enjoying riding.  The close call most likely figured in, but it was a couple months after that I sold the Harley.  A few years later when I purchased the aged Hondamatic, I found joy in riding, that I had never experienced before.  Now after upgrading from the 'matic to the beemer, and finally the Goldwing, I find myself thoroughly enjoying myself each and every time I am on two wheels.

I really cannot explain what is so different now, other than the fact that motorcyling for me is about the ride, and little else.  I may have been too concerned with the trappings of motorcyling, to actually enjoy what I was doing.
