I have observed throughout my life, that kids who are mean to animals or rude to smaller kids, grow up to be assholes.  Kids who love animals and are sweet to smaller kids, grow up to be decent citizens.
Just an observation by the hawk. ;)
You are exactly right!

CUDJOE KEY, Fla. (AP) — A marine construction company that uses the pelican in its logo is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest in the case of injured brown pelicans in the Florida Keys.

Officials say more than a dozen brown pelicans have recently been found with their pouches slit, causing them to starve and die.

The Miami Herald reports Dock and Marine Construction Corp. is offering the reward.

In a statement company president Glen Larson said the person who inflicted such harm on the pelicans "should cut out their own tongues to understand the pain they have inflicted."

Al Sharpton Calls For Emergency Meeting To Address 'Appalling' All-White Oscar NomineesFri, Jan 16, 2015, 9:57AM EST

The Rev. Al Sharpton was left fuming mad after the Oscars revealed its all-white list of nominees for this year's Oscar awards on Thursday.

Sharpton, a critic of the lack of diversity in Hollywood, also announced he was holding an "emergency meeting" next week to address the issue.

"I have called an emergency meeting early next week in Hollywood with the task force to discuss possible action around the Academy Awards," he said.

The prestigious awards ceremony was widely criticized after its nominees for best actor, best actress, and best director were all white. In the past two decades this has happened only one other time, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Sharpton praised the Oscars for nominating the civil-rights film "Selma" for best picture, but said it was "ironic" because the film is based on Dr. Martin Luther King's marches.

Said Sharpton: "The lack of diversity in today's Oscar nominations is appalling and while it is good that Selma was nominated for 'Best Picture,' it's ironic that they nominated a story about the racial shutout around voting while there is a racial shutout around the Oscar nominations. With all of the talent in Selma and other Black movies this year, it is hard to believe that we have less diversity in the nominations today than in recent history."

Libby, with all due respect, I'm calling BS.  Millions of blacks grew up in the time frame, and adjusted quite well.  This guy is nothing more than attention whore, who has made a living off of capitalizing off of the unfortunate events.  He may have had great motives and intentions at one time, but he CLEARLY has done many things, strictly for profit of his own pocket.  He is a creep and I have ZERO respect for this jackwagon.

Palehorse

I am trying very hard not to personally repeat the deplorable actions of this nation within my personal sphere of influence, and within my personal life. I swear I am trying my hardest; but with each act of these deplorable ISIS terrorists, they make it easier and easier to give into that emotional response. In fact, they make it seem called for if you know what I mean.

They have publicly stated, several times, that the Vatican and Rome are on their list of conquests, and as much as I despise organized religion I find even the thought of such a travesty to be unbearable; in fact it is unacceptable on a level that surprises even me.

As fate, or Karma if you will, would have it, I managed to view a "documentary" about a documentary that was put together as Nazi Germany was falling. It was a series of films put together by the allies as they began liberation of the "work camps, labor camps, & extermination camps" as they came upon them. 10's of thousands of feet of film, some of it in color, were shot by military camera-men from each of the allies; and all with the purpose of documenting the war crimes they discovered as they began the liberation of these people imprisoned within them.

A lot of us saw some of the films put together back then, or at best excerpts from them, when we were in high-school; when the memories of the atrocities committed in the name of Nazi Germany were still fresh within the collective minds of this world. When the victims were still comparatively young compared to the current age of those that survived their horrendous ordeals back then.

The goal was to put together a documentary that publicly showed the atrocities to the average citizens around the world, by showing the film in movie houses before, in between, and / or after the feature films for which the patrons had paid. A lot of the footage was shown within the tribunals held for those individuals that were captured and charged with war crimes. But not all of it, and certainly not the documentary. For it was cancelled as it was nearing completion.

I was more than uncomfortable over the macabre irony I discovered within the fact that none other than Alfred Hitchcock himself participated within the production and editing of this film. Yes, he was at or near the peak of his career at that point, and his reputation as the master of suspense and horror made me more than a little uncomfortable with the fact he had a hand in the creation of this documentary.

The film sat for decades, locked in the bowels of some dark building, and eventually was discovered; and the team that discovered it felt it needed completion. And complete it they did. They peppered the earlier work with segments of survivors, in present day, making commentary upon what they went through, what was being depicted within the footage shown, and in a number of cases footage that showed the person speaking on the day of their liberation.

It was a piece of work that stirred a lot of thoughts within me, and among them was the admiration of those individuals that chose to take part in the completion of a documentary within which they were the victims. The horrors they related weren't anything new to me for the most part, for I had the great fortune of growing up amongst a number of survivors of these camps, from Poland and other European nations, as they were the parents of my good friends.

I broke bread with these families, was welcomed into their homes, and as I grew up several of these parents would tell me of their experiences within these places, how they escaped, and what they endured. Likely not good things for the average adolescent boy to be hearing, but with the benefit of hindsight I view this as priceless information as well as experiences. Priceless in that, in some small way their horrific experiences have served to ensure that someone on this planet remembered. And I do.

I had the great honor of carrying two of these survivors to their final resting places for my good friends. I did it equally in honor of my friends as well as their parents; and I was honored to carry them the final distance to their eternal rest. The individuals that still bore tattoo marks that likely served as a source of deep pain and distress for them until their final breath. And I think of them each time the subject of the extermination comes up in conversation or within something I see, read, or hear within the media. It is the source for my deeply engrained disgust and yes, hate, for Nazi Germany, though my family was spared its horrors and tortures.

It was the source for my deep distrust of anyone German for many years, until I found myself working closely with German citizens some years later; and discovered the deep seated emotional burden the average German citizen of today carries over the atrocities committed by those who did so many, many years before they were even a twinkle within their parents eyes. And at that point I laid down my unreasonable hate, and decided that the world needed to remember the lessons that were to be taken from what happened in Nazi Germany,on all sides of the incident, and to never forget them. But it would seem that forget them the population of this world has.

As I viewed the skeletal remains of the victims on my HD screen, some of them in color, I heard not only the stories of the victims within the film itself, but those of the parents of my friends as well. As I saw the hundreds, if not thousands of maimed corpses flash across the screen, (Most of them never seen before on film by this poster), I saw that my knowledge base had been woefully lacking in providing a true measure of the scope of the horrors these people had been subjected to. And I began thinking of the events we, as a planet, are being subjected to today; and I felt that old mistress awakening and stoking the fires of emotional hatred that I had forgotten about.

That the perpetrators of this terrorism are allowed to carry on one more second is an affront to all that is good and fair in this life. That millions of people across this globe are living in constant fear and horror, at potentially becoming the next victims of these Hitler-esq people that egregiously violate each and every law of humankind, and brashly thumb their noses at life itself, is a travesty and miscarriage of justice that moves beyond all else that is evil in this world today.

That we as humanity, find ourselves frustrated over our collective inability to not just squelch these evil terrorists, but bring them to justice for the crimes against humanity that they continue to commit with impunity, is a key indication that we as a species continue to fail to learn the lessons such events are meant to impart upon us; that life itself is priceless above all else, that our differences within life are what we should be celebrating, instead of killing over. That our differences are what bring flavor and variety to each of our lives. That life is something we all should be sharing with each other, instead of fighting over.

Unless we as a species make an overt choice to join together in our differences, to unite globally against those that would inflict such horrors upon any one of us, and do so consistently and as one, we will be doomed to endure such atrocities in an endless cycle of lessons we fail to learn. And doing so is key to the survival of the species.

Yes, we can each have our customs, our beliefs, our laws, and our religions (if you must), but there can be no crime against humanity that does not threaten ALL of humanity. Oppression of one group is oppression of all, mass killings committed are committed against all. And the punishments for such transgressions must be swift, just, and executed with extreme prejudice against all that commit such atrocities.

There are those that scoff at the like of the museums that document the stories of those who survived the atrocities of Nazi Germany. They even go so far as to say it never happened. They lie. They lie based upon an emotional reaction called jealousy, that in itself is a sickness; for who amongst us would want to have endured such a thing? And who amongst us would have anyone else endure such a thing today, tomorrow, or any other time in the future?

Unless we keep the painful memories of what transpires during such events within the forefront of all who follow, we as a species will forget what happened, never see the warning signs to enable ourselves to take the steps necessary to stop it, and we today will fail to break the cycle and doom those who follow us to repeat history yet again. (as we are seeing this day with ISIS).

Our history lessons MUST include detailed information and documentation surrounding WW II, and all world events that have transpired since, including the true facts surrounding how the United States itself was formed, and the atrocities it as a nation imposed upon the indigent peoples of the lands. Not as a means to rip away at the foundations of those countries that were involved within the events, but as a means to teach our species the lessons necessary to ensure that they are armed with the knowledge needed to implement actions that stop such things much earlier in the process.

We cannot continue to gloss over such incidents and present them in some nicely wrapped package that imparts none of the horror and relegates such things to the status of watching a movie. Doing so dooms us to repeating these things, not within our lifetime perhaps, but certainly within those of our children and grandchildren. This is absolutely not what I want for my family, nor yours. Nor any family on this planet.

I see, slowly, the acts of ISIS driving a unification of enemies toward the elimination of these miscreants, which is in itself a good thing, for it is what is necessary for the elimination of this serious threat and danger to every single person on this planet. It will be another case of the irony surrounding the acts of the evil doers driving the solution that ensures their eventual failure. But it has been far too slow in coming, and once we overcome this latest human tragedy , it is my sincere hope that humanity learns the lessons necessary to ensure we enact educational programs that assure our future generations know exactly what transpired, exactly what the victims across this planet endured, and the price we as a species paid in order to eliminate the threat.

Robert E. Lee is said to have stated, "It is well that war is so horrible-lest we grow too fond of it." (Paraphrased and likely not to have ever been said by him). And I couldn't agree any stronger with those words. Our failure has always been, as a species, within our steadfast belief that via sparing our children the dirty details of such events as the American Civil War, we are doing them a favor; but I say we are doing not just our children, but the entirety of humanity, a great injustice in doing so.

As modern warfare has enabled humankind to increasingly sit further and further away from the "tip of the spear", as our weapons impose death and maiming upon others of our species, we are increasingly isolating ourselves from the horrors of war and the lesson to be learned within such. The motivators to work three times harder to avoid it, and the fear of having it waged upon us becoming increasingly non- existent. And with each advance, we enable fondness of war to germinate within the human soul. What horrors will we as a species engage within or endure next?

Wow, Palehorse, That is quite a story! Very interesting. I read every word. It has special meaning for me, on several levels.

First of all, I want to say to Palehorse, something I have told him numerous times before, that he is missing the boat with his life calling.  It should be putting his thoughts to word as he just displayed.  Now, I on many occasions I find that I may disagree with his opinions, but I will NEVER, EVER be put off with his way of communicating his emotions on any given subject.

Sir, you nailed once again!  You made me feel your hurt and frustrations of what is going in this world right now with ISIS, even though, I too feel much as you do.  I think so many of our kids and younger generations, have no clue to what is truly going no right now, they are have been desensitized to evil that is lurking among us.  They have never been taught in school, the enormous amounts of inequity that ravaged our earth before and during WWII.  Even as you mentioned, that most of our very own generation didn't fully grasp it.  Unless you were there are actually knew first hand of those who were there, I'm sure we could never feel the horrors that captivated the people of Europe who lived through that nightmare.

I hope the political side of this topic can stay civil, and we as Americans, can and will figure out exactly HOW we need to approach this.

Again, thanks for sharing and you should find post this on facebook, or in a letter to the editor in some local papers.
