I just read an interesting take on why low gas prices are bad for US oil companies.

It seems the Saudis are welcoming the low prices and are in no hurry to cut production and therefore raise the price. They believe that most of the new US production is in shale oil and that US companies can't continue to produce at such low prices. Shale oil is much more expensive to extract.

They think that eventually the US companies will have to dramatically raise prices or cut back in production and they will once again be the top producers.
