I nominate Elizabeth Warren, Sr. U.S. Senator, Massachusetts. Yes, she's a Democrat, and, unless somebody comes up with something bad about her, she is as close as possible to being what this country desperately needs without being declared a Saint.  But she said yesterday that she will NOT be running.

Hint: she's a lawyer with a heart. She grew up poor.

This isn't my vent, but I'd damn sure be venting had this happened to me:

Quote
IRS seizes woman's entire savings because she deposits less than $10,000 at a time

An Iowa woman named Carole Hinders saw her bank balance go from $33,000 to zero thanks to IRS confiscation. Hinders, who owns a small, cash-only Mexican restaurant, has not been charged with any crime and is not suspected of tax fraud. The IRS says they took her money solely because she deposited too little of it at a time, and the agency claims she did so to avoid the required reporting of any bank transaction over $10,000. She says she just thought it was helpful to save the bank paperwork.

Though the $10,000 rule is ostensibly designed to help catch terrorists and drug dealers, it is far more often used on regular citizens who are unlikely to ever see their money returned. "I don't think [the IRS is] really interested in anything," said a lawyer representing another seizure case. "They just want the money."

To keep her restaurant afloat following the confiscation of her savings, Hinders has had to take out a second mortgage and max out her credit cards. "How can this happen?" she asks. "Who takes your money before they prove that you've done anything wrong with it?"

Now when I first saw this, I thought it was satire, but there's nothing in the description of The Week magazine that indicates it's satirical in nature.  So my question for the group is this:  If this woman was depositing less than $10,000.00 at a time, thus not triggering the compulsory CTR (Currency Transaction Report) to the IRS, then how did the IRS find out she was depositing less than $10,000.00 at a time if there was no CTR?

This story appears to be legit.  Here's another link to it.

QuoteThe New York Times introduces us to Carole Hinders, an Iowa woman who owns a small, cash-only restaurant. Last year she had her checking account, all $33,000 of it, seized by the IRS. Not because she didn't pay taxes on her business (she did), and not because she was suspected of any crime (she wasn't), but because "she had deposited less than $10,000 at a time, which they viewed as an attempt to avoid triggering a required government report."

I would still like to know how the IRS found out that she was making these deposits sans the required CTR for over $10,000.00 cash deposits.

Another reason to get rid of the IRS and implement the fair tax system.

I guess, just like anything else with them or the gov....guilty until proven innocent.

Without getting into the pros and cons of the fair tax, do you really think the abolition of the IRS would stop this sort of government action against potentially innocent people?  I think these sorts of actions would likely be taken over by other agencies should the IRS ever go away (which it isn't).

I agree, it will never go away.......but it would be a great start of a form of government action against innocent people, to go away.

I love the idea of the fair tax.  I also love the idea of reducing government waste, and I think the IRS has a great deal of waste generated by that dept.

The fair tax will let the rich pay less tax. Go to Google and put in Pros and cons of the fair tax law.  Bunky you're not rich, sure can't see where it would do you any good.  Who knows where Henry's brain is.  What a joke.  :haha:

There is no way of know this troll.  Sure, there may be a few, who rich folks who may beat this system.  But, the vast majority will pay more than the do now.  There would be no more loopholes.  No more tax shelters to hide behind.  There more you buy the more you pay.  Statistically, the rich buy more expensive items, thus they will pay MORE than the average citizen.

Sure, tight asses like your self, could get by without paying much taxes.  But, it is supposed to be a free country, and every citizen should have that right.  If you want to pursue happiness, there is a price to pay, but it is the only FAIR way to do it.

When you say it's the fair way, means nothing but a break for the rich.  And Bunky you will never be rich.  How much money you got save back in your IRA.  I'll bet it won't last until you're 80 years old.  So keep healthily and keep on working Bunky,   65  years is coming soon.

So, I assume you think the current way is fair?  Or we would be better off if we taxed the rich a whole lot more?

Troll, not that it is any of your business, but my employer has set me up very well.

No tax system can be considered fair that rewards people for having children at the expense of those who choose not to.  It is a choice...you choose it, you pay for it.

Only a government could be so arrogant as to create a law that forces it's citizens to change the time on their clocks back and forth twice a year, and validate it by saying it creates a longer day. . .

If I cut a foot off the end of a blanket, then sew that foot onto the bottom of the same blanket, it is still the same length.

The sun will rise and set as the seasonal orbit dictates, and try as you might, you cannot change it. Ever.

And the asshats that say it gives us more daylight just need to get their ass up out of the rack an hour earlier every day in the summer months, and let the rest of the nation maintain its natural sleeping rhythm!

I fucking detest these clock games!
