The Troll

Remember the big refinery we had near Indianapolis, called Rock Island.  It's gone just another way to raise the price of gas.

the reason they closed is because they was getting fined everytime they tried to do business because of the extermely stiff regulations...it no longer became profitable, so they closed it down.

Certainly you're not suggesting that Rock Island should have simply been allowed to continue to pollute an entire corner of the city?  It was and, despite years of remediation, still is a toxic waste site.

They left because they did what big corporations like Marathon do.  They bought an aging refinery, ran the piss out of it while spending the bare minimum necessary to keep it running but not enough to insure that it wasn't polluting the environment around it, then more or less abandoned it after they had exploited it for as long as they could without getting caught.  This is the sort of behavior you seem to support...and then have the audacity to suggest that it's the government's fault for having overly restrictive environmental regulations.

Your right EX, I worked with two pipefitter who worked for Rock Island.  They said they were one of the poorest companies for preventive maintainace and wanted to fix everything with bailing wire so it would work until the next shift.  They said it was one of the most dangerous refinery in the country and oftened wondered why it never blew up.  What was so bad the next shift did the same thing.  They never fixed anything until is totally broke down and quit working and stop production.

How long did you work at Rock Island Hawk.  Just asking, you always seem to be in on everything.

the key word is overly restrictive......that seems to be the problem the way I understand it.

Again, I think there needs to be some common ground......I know there has to be some environmental regulations, there are too much politics and the lack of common sense on both sides.

Troll, I did know a person who worked there too, and THAT is why they said they closed it down...the fines and the cost to bring it to the enviromental codes was too much and no longer practical to try to keep it open.

I live in Zionsville so I drive by the place several times a week; go there sometime and let me know if the feds were being, "overly restrictive."  I doubt your buddy that worked there has the credentials to determine why they closed it down but I would suggest that Marathon never intended to keep it open from the time they bought it...just use it up and walk away.

Big corporations have a long history of doing this...look at the mess GM left behind in Anderson.

I won't agrue with you, you could be right, I just know what my "friend" told me....he had worked there for several years...

I would think Marathon would have been aware of upcoming costs and issues, but it does not seem unreasonable that my friend could be correct on this too.

I'm sure Marathon was aware of those costs and issues...just didn't care because they weren't in it for the long term.

If they weren't in it for the long term...why do you think they call themselves Marathon?....
