The deceased wife of a North Carolina senator is being criticized by a radical church group for declining to recognize faith in God throughout the difficulties she's faced in her life.

Elizabeth Edwards, 61, died Dec. 7 after battling cancer for six years. During that time, she accepted her condition, and talked about it openly, even writing letters to her children based on the letters from Aurora Greenway to her daughter in the 1983 film, "Terms of Endearment," according to an Associated Press article.

The wife of North Carolina Senator John Edwards, Elizabeth wrote a note of farewell that was posted on Facebook in the days before her death. It began: "You all know that I have been sustained throughout my life by three saving graces—my family, my friends, and a faith in the power of resilience and hope."

Edwards' funeral will take place Saturday at Edenton Street United Methodist Church in Raleigh. The Westboro Baptist Church, known for their anti-homosexual protests at funerals, will be protesting 45 minutes before the funeral, according to a statement from the group. Their reasoning: her definance of God throughout her struggles, including the death of her son, Wade, who died in a car crash when he was 16, and her six-year battle with cancer.

"WBC will picket a respectful distance from the funeral of Elizabeth Edwards who split hell wide open on December 7, 2010," the note said.

I hope the Edwards Family contacts the Patriot Guar Rider Chapter in their locality. We'll keep those jackasses away from the family and away from the funeral, and crack their fuggin skulls if they try anything!!!!

If it were warmer, I'd ride down and join the local chapter too!

Thanks for the info Pale.  I sent them an email just now.  I'm sure they already know about the situation, but just in case they don't!  If I were to be around on Saturday, I would go counter protest them for sure!

This was the response I got.

The Patriot Guard Riders are not a counter protest group.  We have a very specific mission statement that focuses on our Fallen Heroes that have served our country and citizens.  As much as we would wish that no family would suffer the attentions of these protests, what we do has little to do with protesters.

We understand the sorrow the Edwards family is experiencing and offer our condolences in their loss and hopes that no protesters will attempt to twist their pain for some media exposure.  The best way to prevent these folks from attending funerals is to deny them media coverage and attention.  That is the only reason they would be there.

The family of the deceased has to request the PGR's to attend. I've never known them to take on a mission without that.

A Kansas church infamous for its protests at funerals plans to protest at the Saturday funeral of Elizabeth Edwards.

The Westboro church plans to protest for 45 minutes before the funeral set for 1 p.m. at Edenton Street United Methodist Church in downtown Raleigh, according to the church's website.

Let's create a human buffer between Elizabeth Edwards and the Westboro church

• This will be a powerful and peaceful gathering.
• Remain on city property.
• Do not under any circumstance touch any member of the WBC.
• Do not say or chant anything that acknowledge WBC's presence.
• Police officer(s) will most likely stand between us and WBC to ensure peace.
• Anyone making a physical threat can be arrested for disturbing the peace.

We respectfully request that the media keep cameras and microphones off of the WBC group and report on the funeral and the outpouring of the community's support.
