I've worked in, and later supported, the same department for a little over 30 years.  And now as I prepare to retire, these folks want to have a small celebration for me.  While that is nice and all, I was really hoping to avoid this type of thing, so that I didn't appear all mushy.  I understand them, and appreciate what they are doing, as I've been on the other side of that fence many times myself.  I wanted to just slide out fairly unnoticed, with my manliness intact.  Well, it looks as if that idea is shot to hell.  Guess I should have pissed everyone off at the last minute.

This was all going so easy, but now these damned emotions are getting in the way.

I've worked in, and later supported, the same department for a little over 30 years.  And now as I prepare to retire, these folks want to have a small celebration for me.  While that is nice and all, I was really hoping to avoid this type of thing, so that I didn't appear all mushy.  I understand them, and appreciate what they are doing, as I've been on the other side of that fence many times myself.  I wanted to just slide out fairly unnoticed, with my manliness intact.  Well, it looks as if that idea is shot to hell.  Guess I should have pissed everyone off at the last minute.

This was all going so easy, but now these damned emotions are getting in the way.

  Look at this way 442.  There may be some real friends who really liked you and will miss you.  Have you ever thought how hard is for some of the people who work with you, to come right out and say how much they really liked working with you.  Hell man, let then show you a little love.  Forget the "Man" bullshit.  This only happens once in your life.

  Also just think how this will make the people who truly dislike you feel.  Knowing they probably won't get the same nice treatment.

  Just think after 30 years being around your miserable ass, good and bad days, someone thinks enough of you to throw you a party.

  I know it felt good, after 38 years a Ford, they got me up in front of all of the skilled trade on the day shift, 80 to 100 men and handed me a Golden Toilet Plunger and a going away check of $680.  How sweet it was.  I also know there were some there that hated me and were chewing their tongue.   

  An electrician who retired a week before I did, got a $47 going away check.  I told the person taking up his money, the the only reason I was giving a $1 was to see him go and if he didn't go,  I wanted my money back.

Man up dude! It's the only way they have of demonstrating their respect, love, and admiration without getting all mushy themselves. Besides, its another way to get out of work if only for half an hour or so.

We all "want" to ride off quietly into the sunset, but rare is the man who actually gets to do so. And in those cases they are largely hated. . . You are not. Revel in it, bawl a lil bit, and take it like the human being and man that you are. Have a good time if you can. You'll fondly recall the event later on! 

Congrats and here's to yah my man!

Oh I know, you guys are right, I just have to suck it up and go along with everything.  But it ain't gonna be easy.  I'd have likely been dissapointed if some of them hadn't done something, but it would have made leaving them behind all that much easier.

We had a guy retire in the middle of the afternoon last year.  He went to break, and didn't come back.  He later called his supervisor to tell him he was gone.  The friend he was working with, and who was waiting on him to come back from break was devastated.  They had been pretty close, and for this guy to leave and not to tell anyone was a rotten thing to do.  Everyone was pissed at that point.  I sure don't want to go out on those terms, but I was hoping for some middle ground.  Guess there isn't any to be found.

But hey, thanks for letting me vent, and thanks for the confirmation on what I knew to be the right thing to do.  I just needed to hear it.

  Let me tell you it no big deal, it only in your head.  I guarantee that it will feel damn good.

  We had a supervisor in purchasing who was give the choice of being fired or quitting.  Some dumbass woman claimed that he had verbally sexually harassed her.  A she said, he said.  Nobody up in the front office thought he was guilty, knowing her.  If he had been in our Union he wouldn't have had to make the choice.

  Well, they had a party for him, the people filled the big room he was in.  Several people got up and said good things about him and they had a good time.  Just before it was over, he got up and said he was wronged by the upper management at Ford and thanked everyone who supported.  As he close his little speech he said, "For you people who supported me, thank you from the bottom of my heart."  He then took off his tie and  tore open his white shirt exposing the white Tee shirt under it.  He said "and this is for you who didn't."  The T shirt said, FUCK YOU.  It brought down the house.
