Israel cannot allow ships to go directly to Gaza for security reasons. Innocent Israeli families are threatened daily with missile attacks launched from Gaza, and Israel must make sure weapons are not being smuggled into Gaza in "humanitarian" cargoes.  Israel offered to offload all humanitarian supplies on board this ship and deliver them to Gaza.

the organization behind this flotilla belongs to the Union of Good, which was created for the specific purpose of transferring tens of millions of dollars a year to Hamas-controlled entities in the Gaza Strip and whose leaders have been designated by our State Department as Specially Designated Global Terrorists.

I am just starting to hear about this story...I am not saying this is the truth, but it is what I have learned so far....

Exactly my point surrounding the smoke and mirrors thing. BOTH sides are not above out right lying, so it's hard to tell what is truth. . . I've seen video supporting both sides of this argument, but when an Israeli government official gets on the record saying these military personnel were utilizing paint ball guns, I have to call bullshit loud and clear.

Mossad, Metsada, Aman, or Shin Bet, all use live rounds any time they are armed. . . And I cannot believe ANYONE would go into a forced boarding initiative carrying anything but a loaded firearm, or be so stupid as to carry anything less. . . Does Israel really think anyone is going to buy that bullshit?  Just the fact they put it out there is indicative of someone screwing the pooch big time!

I've also heard the extremes on both sides of this argument, including the accusations of the flotilla being operated/funded by known terrorist organizations. . . and the reverse as well.

One thing's sure though, Egypt has opened up their border with Gaza now and the supplies and arms will once again begin to flow freely into the area.

Anyway you look at this, gasoline just got poured onto a smoldering fire, so let the games begin anew. . .

The soldiers had been told to avoid violence and were armed with paintball guns. The army said they had orders to use their handguns only under extreme circumstances.

"I was armed with a paint gun and had no other weapons. It was a civilian paintball gun that any 12-year-old can play with," one of the men, quoted by the AFP news agency, said.

"We didn't come for war, we just came to tell please stop, move the vessel back."

Aerial footage released by Israel appears to show commandos being attacked as they abseil onto the deck of the ship. Some Israeli commentators asked why commanders put troops into a position where they were cornered.

But the Israeli military puts the blame for the deaths on the organisers of the aid flotilla, saying its soldiers were attacked by a lynch mob, some of whom were armed with clubs and knives.

I agree, I think a governments military is there for ONE reason....to kill any enemey that is bringing harm to it's country....NOT, to put a bruise on them.....I think Israel is walking a tight rope, between flipping the bird and ALL of it's enemies and blowing the hell out of them and playing politics and TRYING to keep others happy.

Israel has enjoyed decades of protection and other countries running interference for them in international incidents. They have become arrogant and cock sure, and their arrogance now threatens the international reputation and relationships of this country as well as its other allies.

Personally I believe Israel has become an international liability to everyone, and their actions incur the risk of being set adrift by those who have formally supported them historically.

The time has come to hold Israel accountable to the policies everyone else is expected to conduct themselves within. . .

for like the third time in a month....we agree!!....I think Israel has shown GREAT restraint TRYING to keep peace.....but, they are growing thin on patience and the U.S. should fully support them....

I never said such a thing, what I am saying is thus far the actions of Israel on that flotilla appear to be no different than what those pirates in Somalia have done and are doing; attacking ships in international waters.

They killed at least 9 people and I submit that if the military forces executing this initiative were indeed only carrying paintball guns, then they did so to evoke hostile reaction from those aboard the watercraft they had targeted.
