We didn't get a chance to buy any this year. Usually, a lady comes in to KFC and we order them, but I didn't see her this year.  No GS cookies for Dex this year.

It feels good to not be selling them this year, but I did order quite a few. I like the Thin Mints,Tag a longs, Allabouts, and Do Si Dos. I'm sick of Samoas.

That's how they do it here.  Also, quite a bit of the time, the parents sell them for the kids, which is cheating IMO.

Oh my Dex! If you really like them and want to help out a troop, then I'd just call the regional GS office. You can find it by looking at http://www.girlscouts.org/ and I know they'll be able to get you in touch w/a troop and some cookies.

I was involved w/GS as a leader for a few years and I love and believe in that organization very much. They do a lot of positive programs for the girls and the money earned through cookie sales pays for programming, scholarships, and the individual troop goals. I can't say enough positive things about GS and the cookie sales is about the only fundraiser that I'd wholeheartedly endorse.

For quite a while, GS wasn't allowed to go door-to-door, because parents aren't the most responsible in some cases and would send girls out selling alone. I don't have to tell you the risks of that. So, to protect the girls, they eliminated that as an option. When I left Maryland, that was the rule. Here in California, we could sell door to door, but we had to do it as a troop. If the troop decided against door-to-door sales then it was prohibited. Although, unspoken, that if the parents decided to sell to neighbors, that was on them.

Cookie sales can be just like anything else that parents perceive to be competitive. They try to out do each other and yes, they cheat and ruin the entire concept and fun for the kids. It all depends on the troop leader. I never made it a competition w/other troops. I invited troops to sell at our booths with us, if they were all taken in the lottery. I bought cookies from kids who's parents didn't want to participate, just so they could get the patch and prizes. Shockingly, even some troop leaders were highly competitive and IMO ruined it for the girls.

I stopped at the 7-11 on my way back to the office and the power was out. I could see 3 clerks taking money and writing down everything as people checked out, so obviously they were still in business. I grabbed my drink and got in line. The lines were moving a little slowly, but not too much. The place is always packed and to be honest, I couldn't pick up on much of a difference. Why is it that there's always one individual that can't understand why complaining loudly isn't going to help the process at all? Did he think that they decided to cut the power for the fun of it and handle a rush at lunch time? So, I asked him, "Don't you think they're handling this the best way they can, I'm sure they don't have any control over the power". In response (actually he looked at me while I was talking, but I don't think he heard me) he starts bellowing out about the clearks needing calculators. They had calculators. When that became apparent he started bellowing about only taking cash. He was saying they should only take cash because the debit cards take too long. Well, duh! Captain Obvious! The power's out! They can't use the debit machines. Next was a rant about "only in America". I don't know what that was all about, but thankfully, I didn't have to listen to anymore because it was my turn to pay and get out. What an idiot!
