-9.7% as of Feb. 29.  Can you feel the progress?

you mean the vast progress by the democratic congress and senate?....

I agree.  But the Democrates were able to scare too many people , making it politically impossible for politicians to implement Bush's voluntary plan.  Bush tried to start the process of change to some form of permanent viable financial security for us masses.  He was thwarted.

It was just a first shot across the bow of public awareness.  The issue will be back so we might all just as well educate ourselves about SS so we can make good decisions on what to support.

Oh puleeze, Mun-ro.  The problem is, and has been, not that SS monies should be allowed into the stock market where it can be bled off by Big Business/Wall Street and the vagaries of the market, but that SS monies have been placed in the General Fund to be raided by both Congresses and Presidents instead of being kept separate and drawing interest.

You want to straighten it out?  Do a lil' accounting to figure out what the balance with interest less expenses would be had SS monies been separate and drawing interest and then seize the assets of all the living and deceased Presidents and Congress members and their direct inheritors and replace the SS monies they spent and interest they, in essence, stole.

Law of Logical Argument - Anything is possible if you don't know what you are talking about.  ;)

"You've probably noticed that opinion pollsters go out of their way to include as many morons as possible in surveys ... I think it's dangerous to inform morons about what their fellow morons are thinking. It only reinforces their opinions. And the one thing worse than a moron with an opinion is lots of them." -- Scott Adams

In other words: Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.  ;)

"Hitler is gone, but if the majority of our fellow citizens are more susceptible to the slogans of fear and race hatred than to those of peaceful accommodation and mutual respect among human beings, our political liberties remain at the mercy of any eloquent and unscrupulous demagogue." -- S. I. Hayakawa

best thing to do is take out a loan from your 401k and pay off other higher intrest debts you have.  the intrest you pay goes to yourself then, and at least that portion of your 401k will be making money.

The highest interest I'm currently paying on any outstanding debts is 0%.

"A decade ago, Sen. John McCain embraced legislation to broadly deregulate the banking and insurance industries, helping to sweep aside a thicket of rules established over decades in favor of a less restricted financial marketplace that proponents said would result in greater economic growth.

In 2002, McCain introduced a bill to deregulate the broadband Internet market, warning that "the potential for government interference with market forces is not limited to federal regulation." Three years earlier, McCain had joined with other Republicans to push through landmark legislation sponsored by then-Sen. Phil Gramm (Tex.), who is now an economic adviser to his campaign. The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act aimed to make the country's financial institutions competitive by removing the Depression-era walls between banking, investment and insurance companies.

That bill allowed AIG to participate in the gold rush of a rapidly expanding global banking and investment market. But the legislation also helped pave the way for companies such as AIG and Lehman Brothers to become behemoths laden with bad loans and investments."

AIG is part of American General Finanace Company.  You know who I mean, those legalized loan sharks that charge 20 -30% interest, and get away with it.   If AIG bites the dust (which they won't witht he gov. money) they F'ing deserve it.
