Most of us throughout our childhood, are led to believe in the jolly fat man in the red suit. Now, I don't know about other people, but I was extremely gullible as a child. He he, maybe as an adult too. Anywho...... My parents were very convincing about Santa being real.I fell for it hook, line, and sinker. I truly believed ,that this guy really did make a list, and check it twice, had a belly like jelly, came down the chimney( without burning his ass mind you),and Rudolph really was his red nosed reindeer. I guess all dreams must end,and the air must be let out of  all ofthe proverbial balloons.

When I was 9, I still thought it was true. That year we went to Florida, to my Aunt's house for Christmas. Imagine my horror Christmas morning, to see no gifts from Santa, under the Christmas Tree. First panic hit... Had I not been good enough all year? What went wrong? OMG... had he forgotten me? Had he skipped me over because, I wasn't at my home? So, I started to cry because, I didn't know what was wrong. My Mom took me to a bedroom, and explained that he was only real in spirit. I was TOTALLY DEVISTATED.  :'(

Then came the rage........... I threw a tempertantrum of gargantuan proportion. I think I admonished my parents, for living a lie,and stringing me along LOL!!!How could they? How dare they? Why why why???? This went on for at least an hour. They said " Why don't you come open your presents?" I said "If there really is no Santa, and those presents aren't from him, I don't want them." I never did open them for several days. I felt completely betrayed by my parents LOL!!!!

Sometimes, I wonder if it is wise, to let children believe in things, that aren't real. Every year after that, when Mom wrote "from Santa" on the tags on our gifts I scoffed, and rebuked her for it. While it's a novel idea, if I had children, I might tell them Santa is within our hearts, and with us in spirit, but I wouldn't leave milk and cookies out that's for sure LMAO!!!!

Now, I've shared my story about finding out the truth about Santa, and I hope others will share their experience. Lets hear it guys!!!!  :biggrin:.......................

Oh, I could so hijack this thread with that remark.  :yes: :razz:  But I won't.

Thanks Loc, I debated whether to put  that line in there. I knew how it might be construed.  You could still share your Santa myth debunking if you'd like to.  :yes: :biggrin:

Well since ya' invited me back in, I'll say that of all the things that children are allowed to believe in, and even more troublesome taught, old Saint Nick certainly can't be categorized as the worst in that regard.  :wink:

Honestly, I don't know when I found out, but I can't ever remember not knowing that he wasn't real. I do recall pretending that I believed that he was real, because it made my mom happy to think I believed. At some point she stopped expecting me to pretend and so I stopped, but it wasn't anything we ever talked about.

My son became aware that there wasn't a Santa because of a buying war between my sister-in-law and her ex. She had marked all of her presents from "Santa" and my nephew's dad had marked all of his presents from him. So, when my nephew returned to her house he said something like, "I see what dad got me and Santa, but what did you get me?". So she broke it to him loudly, right there and then.  My son happened to be there.

I mentioned my experience w/my daughter previously. :biggrin: Before her, I thought it was harmless fun...the lie...but I don't think it's so harmless anymore. Although she still believes in Santa, but it's the feeling of Christmas that she identifies as Santa and not the fat guy in a red suit. I explained to her that he's a symbol, like a Nike swoosh or Mickey Mouse and there isn't a real guy in a red suit living at the North pole and that "Santa" aka the feeling of Christmas spirit is what's real.

When I read this thread I got the song, "I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus" in my head and I can't get it out now.

Christmas magic, ah how wonderful it is. We can lose track of it as adults in our cold cynical worlds we build for ourselves. But as a tiny tot, we get to see the world in such wonder at Christmas. We lose it though, that vision, then spend a lifetime rebuilding it. If we are lucky, we will see  it again before we pass on. But we see it with our old eyes then, not new, but the magic is still the same, wonderful.

I know some Christians get a bit huffy about Santa Claus and some stuff because they get on some holy purity trip. But it's Christ's birthday we are celebrating and we sure cook up a big shindig for it with all kinds of traditions. We manage to drag even unbelievers into it, some kicking and screaming, so knowing the Lord, I know he digs t.

As far as kids and Santa Claus, have fun with it and them. Don't worry when they figure it out eventually, they will understand. Good chance, they will smile and not tell you there isn't a Santa Claus unless pushed, they love you and don't want to ruin your fun. After all it's Christmas, and mom and dad could use some of that Christmas magic too.
And thus I clothe my naked villainy
With old odd ends, stol'n forth of holy writ;
And seem a saint, when most I play the devil.

It's too bad your SIL had to ruin it for everybody.  :mad: I work with a guy, that will not let his children believe in any of that stuff.  :no:

My mom didn't do the milk and cookies thing. With her it was carrots.(Her favorite) I don't remember how old I was, but I noticed that Santa's handwriting looked just like hers. When I asked she had the answer."He broke his arm and asked her to do the tags." When it happened again the next year I was done. My little sister believed for 2 more years. My little brother for 1. I think he ruined it for her :yes:
