The holidays are a wonderful time. Since our pets share in the festivities, we should try, as responsible pet owners, to make sure we safe guard them, from possible dangers. This will be a thread for tips, suggestions, ideas,and questions concerning pet safety at the holidays.

One of the biggest dangers to our pets, is the accidental consumption, of things that are poisonous. I'm listing a few, and invite anybody to add to this list....

Christmas tree water.... If you have a live tree, you may put a solution in the tree water, to better preserve the longevity, of your tree. Some of these solutions are poisonous to animals. Please read the label carefully,to make sure it is pet safe.

Flowers and plants..... Poinsettias are fatal if swallowed by animals. I was very surprised to find this out.
Baby's Breath..... Very toxic to cats!!! If you think your cat has ingested Baby's Breath, call your vet immediately!!!! If the cat starts to vomit, watch what is actually coming up. I had a cat that ate Baby's Breath, he started vomiting,and I noticed that it looked like a plant of some sort. I called the vet and told them he swallowed Baby's Breath, they told me to watch him,and if he STOPPED vomiting,to take him ,somewhere immediately. He came out alright. Needless to say, I don't allow Baby's Breath, in my house anymore.

There are many things you would never dream of that are poisonous to animals. Here are a few surprising ones......
Raw onion>>>> fatal to cats
Rhubarb>>>>> fatal to various animals>>> the leaves are poisonous to people too>>>> Rhubarb leaves that has been frosted on, or frozen is deadly to humans
Lily of the Valley>>> animals and humans
Bleeding Heart>>>>> animals and humans

Moving on to electrical cords>>>> not only can an animal get shocked, or burned by them, they can strangle themselves playing with them.

Christmas tree tinsel /or/ icicles>>>> Animals love shiny things,if they eat these, they could have intestinal problems,as well as bowl problems.

Outdoor playing>>>> With all of the excitement, a dog that is loose could run into traffic. It's always best to either tie them up, or supervise them strictly. Same goes for you children LOL!!!  :wink:

These are just a few things to get us started. OK guys.... let's hear your tips ,suggestions, and ideas.......  :biggrin:

Excellent tips, Dex.

Did you guys know that cats are lactose intolerant?  They love milk and milk products but their little tummies ain't too happy with it and they usually vomit or get the runs.

So, no eggnog for the kitties, ya'll! 
If you don't have anything nice to say then come over here and sit by me!

Hubby's cat is lactose intolerant.  :yes: If he drinks milk, he might keep it down 5 mins, and then up it comes.  :puke: For some reason, ice cream doesn't bother him. Of course we don't give him a lot, maybe just a little taste,and it doesn't bother him. It may seem crazy, but I've seen kittens that were lactose intolerant. The milk curdles in their stomach, and they blow chunks. LMAO!!!!

Nice, I think I will now serve crisped rhubarb leaves in the salad before serving up the spaghetti with the special mushrooms in it next time I make a meal for my enemies.
And thus I clothe my naked villainy
With old odd ends, stol'n forth of holy writ;
And seem a saint, when most I play the devil.

No, I have a peace treaty signed with cats. I am currently at peace with all creatures, though I do have a no fly zone.

No, I was running with the info about frost/frozen rhubarb leaves being poisonous to humans.

A few years ago I was browsing around on the internet looking for information about mushrooms that grow wild and while reading I found that so many of them are poisonous. Being of dark humor and bent, I read on thinking this is some evil information. It would make wonderful material for a chiller novel or if I ever need to get rid of some inlaws.

Spaghetti and mushrooms is always a winner to serve. One of the particular mushrooms isn't lethal unless you drink when you ingest it. What a marvelous plot thickener, the assassin would have the same mushrooms in his or her stomach as everyone else, but just didn't have any of the wine.

Mwahahahah.  :sneaky:

Here's one for you:

All you cats and dogs listen up! Stay away from the ladder while the humans are on it hanging those lights they hang every year around this time. They also like to fall off the top once in awhile and try to break your neck or something! Then they walk around with some silly rock like thing on one of their paws, which interestingly enough now contains fiber like roughage that is nice for the digestive tracts.

It's hell if they whack yah with it though so you have to catch them napping. OH! And when about 2 or 3 weeks have passed, be sure to get a whiff of the pleasantly sour odor that comes from those things too! Gives yah one hell of a Flehmin response! Worth the whack!  :biggrin:

Never let your cats /or/ dogs have the Christmas pinata, after it's been busted. They could quite possibly eat it, /or/ they may hump it,and get paper cuts on their unmentionables.  :spooked:

Another pet safety tip to add....... The little wires in decorations that are fiber optic, can be dangerous to your pets. They can be ingested causing illness or death.  :spooked: They can also become embedded in your pets paws, causing intense pain and/or infections.  If any of these situations occur, call your vet immediately.
