Well, we've got secondary lights, heat, and cooking resources, and we're stocked up with food and drink. Thankfully we remembered the value of having a gas water heater during power outages and we had one put into this place. So, if the power goes out we can still take a nice hot shower to warm up and wash the stank off. . .

I think we are ready if this goes badly. . . It won't be pretty but we won't freeze or starve!

Everything out here is coated in ice that is growing thicker as I write this. This keeps up I predict a power outage will happen sometime around 4 or 5 am in the morning. . .

I just dread chipping it all off my truck tomorrow!

Put a couple pieces of cardboard under the windshield wipers and cover the windshield.  That works, we got our car in the garage.

The wind will just blow it away and take the wipers with it! (tried that)

Now we have the ice pellets, covered the sidewalk in 15 minutes. We have a gas water heater, too, and city water, thank goodness. I hated having to rely on wells and pumps.

Just took these. This is NOT snow! It is solid ice and it is covering everything!

Um, if the gas water heater has an elec pilot it won't come on to light the burner to heat the water.

Electric ignition only. . . the pilot stays on. . .Only time the electronics work is if the pilot goes out for some reason. . .

Now, for the conditions:

Ice is half to three quarters of an inch thick and covering everything. Our garage doors will not even open up because of the weight of the ice on them. I had to go out and chip the ice off the ground that had encased them and prevented them from opening at all, but even with that gone they only come up about a foot or so. . .

I walked the neighborhood a little this morning around 5 am, and it is a sheet of solid ice out there. You can hear the ice cracking under your feet and every once in awhile you hear the loud cracks of the ice shifting and the trees are creaking under the strain.

I got some pics but they aren't that good. I will get more when the sun comes up.

I got the garage door to open manually, but it is HEAVY! Currently negotiating with my wife to stay at home and forget about work today. . . I am not sure I am winning. . .

Madison county needs to activate an emergency level advisory soon!

Took me an hour and a half to chip the ice off the windshield and side windows of my truck! I did take a very large section of cardboard out to the truck and covered the windshield with it; strapping it down with a bungie cord across the center of it. Hopefully the coming ice will freeze it in place before the winds grab it and take it away. . . I don't want to spend that  much time clearing it off again tomorrow morning!

The ice was so thick even the electric defroster couldn't budge it on the rear window. But it did make it easier to chip it off once it warmed up a little.

I had the truck plugged in so the defroster on the windshield worked somewhat, but with a diesel you have to drive it to get it to generate enough heat to really melt that stuff. . . So despite my concerns with the wind taking out my windshield wipers, I put the cardboard on.

Being a person who has installed a lot of water heaters.  I wonder how many people have electric pilot.  I never installed one.

Who wants to spend over $1000 of a 30 gallon water heater just so they can have electric ignition on their water heater.  When you figure the cost to the of savings in gas, there is no saving.  Especially when any gas water heater on hard water is only going to last less that 7 years before the get a leak in the center core.   :salute:  Plumber Troll :no1:  :flag:

Ours is a new(er) home (we are in our 4th year here and the original owners) and we chose gas over electric intentionally. We also installed a water softener right out of the gate to avoid just that situation!

And I was concerned over the electronic light, and found out it only uses it when the pilot goes out; otherwise the pilot stays lit, just like the pilots on our gas fireplaces, (which are also electronic pilot lighting).

I wish ovens worked that way.  At least I'll be able to cook on top of the stove and have the burners for heat off and on.  Guess I can always use my dutch oven though if the need arises and we want biscuits or something.  For toast I'll just go dig out our camp toaster that goes on the camp stove.  Hope it doesn't come to that though.

Yeah, I dug out our camping gear on Sunday. Our stove is electric so the propane camp stove will be put into service if the power goes out. And we've got the toaster thing too!

You can use a long match or lighter to ignite the gas burners you know. . . The gas valves will still open, its just the igniter that won't light the gas. . . (At least they USED to work that way).

I wonder is  you will pay the extra money for another one.  That is, if you keep your house with that wonder and kind Home Owners Association.
