Oh honey, I understand COMPLETELY.  It was right before Xmas 4 years ago when we had to take Bo to put him to sleep.

Hubby drove and I was in the back seat with Bo, wrapped in a blanket, feeling his breathing get shakier and shakier.  It was 11 at night and I just couldn't bear him to suffer any longer.  He had spindle-cell cancer and it was eating his organs.  He went from 112 pounds to about 75 in just a month.  It happened so fast.

Anyway, we had to drive about 30 miles to the vet and I sobbed the entire way.  It started to rain like hell as we were driving back and hubby had to dig the grave in the pouring rain.

Needless to say, Xmas sucked that year.  I haven't been able to look at his picture since.

One year on Christmas Eve day, we had to have our dog Rusty put to sleep. He was fairly old when we got him. We had him for 5 years. My husband never cried when we lost a pet. But we had to hold Rusty when they gave him the shot, and hubby cried all the way home. We thought Pugsly was going to die of a broken heart. Rusty and Pugsly were best buds.

I had a little mixed bread terripoo for 12 years. I was getting ready for work one morning and she wasn't acting right. She was panting a lot,and for a brief minute I thought about staying home. I set up a fan for her and went to work. After work we had a crew meeting. I was just seated and having a Coke, when my boss came to me and said"You have an emergency phone call" So, I went to the phone and it was hubby and he says "You need to come home, Chablis is dead" I was soo shocked I said" I'll be home as soon as I have something to eat"  I walked back to the table sat down and totally lost it in front of everybody. I said"I have to go my dog's dead" Everybody was like "Don't leave you're too upset to drive, have something to eat and kind of calm down" I jumped up and said "I've got to go home and bury my dog." I walked to my car, got in ,put my seatbelt on, turned he key, and don't remember anything until I pulled in my driveway. I don't know who drove my car that time, but it sure as hell wasn't me.

I had a cat named Smokey.  I got her when she was kitten back in 1993.  She was a smokey gray in color and was my best friend.  I had her in good times and in bad times.  Sometimes I didn't know where the money was gonna come from to get her food,  but somehow Smokey and I always managed.  When I got married in 1998, I told my husband that he had to adopt my cat too. Smokey seemed to always have a cold...always sneezing and seemed congested....but the vet said she didn't have any signs of serious diseases. Last July 31, 2006...I woke up to go to the bathroom and there beside my bed was Smokey..she had died while I was asleep.  She looked like she was headed to the bed to get to me and it has always bothered me that I wasn't there for her when she needed me. I think I let her down.  I loved that cat soooooo much.  I have her daughter...who is now 10 years old....and I dread the day Samantha goes over the Rainbow Bridge.  Why do we let ourselves get so attached to animals?  My cats are like my babies.  I talk to them and believe it or not...they talk back to me.  Smokey would actually meow and it sounded like she was saying "Milk"...she would go to the refrigerator and meow "Milk". I miss her...but I now have 6 kittys who I also love...but Smokey will always hold a special place in my heart.

You shouldn't feel quilty, you didn't see it comming. I was blind sided when Chablis died. I had no clue. Smokey sounds like a very special cat. My cats are my children too.

I've been taking care of 2 abandoned kittens. Last night, I went to wake them up for feeding, and the littlest one was dying. It's little body was soo cold. Kittens don't die easily. It was terrible. It cried ,and choked, and I held it for 5 hours. I wrapped it in a little blanket, and put it on my chest. I was exhausted anyway, and that can be very draining to deal with. The last time I looked at the clock, it was 3 am. I must have drifted off, because my alarm went off a 7 am, and he was still on my chest,and he was dead. I hate knights like that.

I think we can feel more confident in placing our love and emotions with animals.

It's a helluva lot better than trusting people!

Animals will never lie to us or betray us.  They love us unconditionally.  And all it costs us is an occasional trip to the vet and some food.  They are always there to keep us company so we don't feel alone and they don't bitch about who has the remote!
