Do you have any idea how expensive wigs and hairpieces are?  Good Lord!  Even the synthetic ones are outrageously priced!

I can get a prescription from my oncologist--(we will call him Alex because he looks just like Alex Trebec--MEOW) and insurance will pay for all or a part--depends on the company and the price of the wig.

Synthetic wigs are cheaper but human hair is easier to deal with.....for example, you can't put conditioner on a synthetic wig without it looking like Samara from "The Grudge."

I have just acquired Raquel Welch's address and am in the process of writing her to ask if she would be willing to donate one to me or at least let me have one with a discount.  She has donated a lot of her wigs to cancer foundations in the past so I figure what's one more, right?  Besides, her wigs are just divine!

Any ideas for acquiring wigs and hairpieces are welcome.  I am in the process of making a few "hat wigs" with hair extensions as we speak.

I have about 4-6 weeks before my hair will begin to noticeably fall out--so there is time.

Thanks for your input guys and gals!

Have you contacted your local chapter of the American Cancer Society, tallulah?

I want to say that they have grants & such which can be used to obtain such things...I'm pretty sure that's how my mother was able to obtain one.

I'll also ask an acquaintance of mine who recently acquired a wig...

tallulahdahling

Yeah, a friend of mine is on the board of the local chapter.  Let's just say that the selection looks like wigs Ruth Buzzie would wear in one of her skits     SAD!

There's a place a few blocks from where I work, but I really don't think anyone would look good with a long blue spiked mullet :spooked: or zebra print hair. I wonder who buys those things?

Where does the hair from "Locks for Love" go? Is that just for children? I really should know more about it, because my daughter and I had a ...um...heated...uh...challenging difference of opinion about why her hair looked better w/out tangles. Anyway, as promised, because it was zapping all my energy to have this "discussion" daily, I decided to get her hair cut. It was long enough that the stylist recommend that we donate it to "Locks for Love". Which we did.

There was a lady that I worked with that specifically grew her hair to donate each time she got it cut. (I found out after the fact), but I don't know how it works beyond that.

FYI:

WHAT IS LOCKS OF LOVE?

Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. We meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. The prostheses we provide help to restore their self-esteem and their confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to return a sense of self, confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss by utilizing donated ponytails to provide the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children. The children receive hair prostheses free of charge or on a sliding scale, based on financial need.

my lil brother has been in a phase the past few years where he grew his hair out long (looked like crap....but whats my opinion worth?)
Anyhow, he announced recently that as soon as its a couple of inches longer, he is cutting it off to give to locks of love.

FABULOUS!  Please do!  I plan on donating all of my head/hair stuff when I finish chemo so an expert will definitely come in handy!

My mom and two of my friends just donated hair.  It might take me another 2 years to get it to 10 inches! Ugh!  My sister and mom can grow their hair so fast.  My sister has donated twice!

Ebay is a great idea. I don't know why I didn't think about it.  Do you have Craig's list where you live?  Also, what about Freecycle?
