Then explain the concept of Free Will, where 'God' gives man the ability to make good/bad, moral/immoral choices.  If one man has the free will to choose to shoot and kill his neighbor, how do you blame God for that passing?  It's easier to say it was the will of God, than it is to say it's the will of man.  (and I do believe in a God)
Looks like I've come full circle.

Free will falls into the catagory of conscience.  to make a decsion to do wrong is a free decision.  do or do not.  Belief in God just means that the conscience of the individual is governed by the position established by founders of whatever organized religion they attach themselves to.

if you exercise free will and believe in God, you can still absolve yourself of responsibility by being "forgiven", although consequences may be meted out.

the will of God would be useful when things play out differently than you wish because of your actions or inactions.

I like to think of God as christianity's  ultimate cop out.  he must be out there somewhere, but we dont chat often.
Although I do tend to blame him often for my failures and disappointments, while I reward myself for my successes.  I like that kind of relationship, no responsibility on me, all of it on an unseen being. Works for me.

There is nothing out there, but planets, stars, galaxies, dark matter......

Religion is a mistaken survival strategy whereby humans see other "human" activity all around them; faces in the clouds, force behind the storm hitting or not hitting.  It is a natural, unconcious attempt to provide order and meaning to NOTHING and EVERYTHING.

There are plenty of bible huggers that think they are controlled by both good and bad invisible forces: devils and gods.  They take responsibility for nothing; everything is god's will, even when the evil ones make them do something bad.  Craziness.

The best explanation I have heard, so far, is in the book Faces in the Clouds by Guthrie.  Not really an easy read as one should have some background in Kant, Freud, Nitsche (sp), et al, but it does a wonderful job of wrapping religion in the auspices of antropomorphism, which is exactly what religion is; all religions, cults, etc.

Well, Dan, you have to admit that belief in some deity reigns in bad behavior to a degree, and doesn't do any harm.  As long as they don't knock on my door, they can spend their time and money in their pursuit of happiness.   I will spend mine on mine.

Damfast: "Well, Dan, you have to admit that belief in some deity reigns in bad behavior to a degree, and doesn't do any harm."

Well, Dam, tell that to the Sunnis and the Shiites and the Kurds, and the palestinians and israelis, and the Irish catholics and protestants, and the abortion doctors and the folks in OK city, and the folks in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Sudan, Somalia, Kosovo, Indonesia, Phillipines, Colorado City, UT, and the non-christians in the VA hospitals or at the AF Academy, or........

i was considering going there dan, but i caught myself when i realized she said "belief in".  nobody goes to war because of their belief, they do it because their belief has been twisted by an individual with an agenda.  in my opinion.

There were very strong thunderstorms in and around Fort Lauderdale today.  In Oakland Park, a suburb of Fort Lauderdale, the roof of a church gymnasium collapsed in the wind and rain.  The pastor of the church was just shown on the news and said that the gym will most likely have to be demolished, but he was trusting in the lord to get him and his congregants through this hardship.

Again, god simply sucks.  He allowed the roof of the church of a group of his followers to collapse in a storm, when he could have just waved his hand and sent the storms around that church.

Those who believe that a personal god looks out for them need a serious reality check.  It's obvious that their god more often gives the middle finger to his followers than he does to the non-believers.

As I said before, god sucks.

Well, maybe he was in deep conversation with Tammy Faye, and just wasnt paying attention.

And once again, we dont face our own issues, we say it is God's responsibility....

And dont yell at ME Dan, I have no strong opinions about anything except paying speeding tickets.

Well...maybe we suck for even asking God to take care of us like that.  8)

The roof fell in due to wind and rain.  Maybe it needed repaired. Maybe no one was paying attention the fact it needed repairs. Maybe it fell in as a wake up call. FIX ME!!!

Sorry, but when you said: "Well, Dan, you have to admit that belief in some deity reigns in bad behavior to a degree, and doesn't do any harm.

I had to tak exception.  Religion is a BAD thing in the world and will likely be the cause of the death of most of us, even those of us not "playing the game".  The mear fact that the US chose sides in establishing and maintaining israel makes me an unwilling participant and I don't like it.  The invasion of iraq is yet another example.  Stupidity at its highest form.  Any moron who could read would have known taking sadaam out was an invitation to the sunnis and shiites to go at it.  Even dumbass bush senior knew better, but his idiot son?
