I got a son, 16, who is an excellent musician..plays the drums in the band, but seem like he can play anything he gets his hands on..a really good kid.
I got a daughter, 12, who is as pretty as her mom, and is into acting and swimming.
and I got twins, 6 years old...a boy and a girl...and they are a hoot...the just started kindergarten a month ago...and that is the best thing in thier world...

Nice age range!

So, your little ones were 6 when they started kindergarten? We have to decide if we will hold our oldest back next year...she'll only be 4 when school starts & won't turn 5 until a month later. *shrug*

Don't be in too big of a hurry to get them in school....they grow up too dang fast the way it is....let them be little for as long as you can....at least that is my advise..

I will certainly heed your advice, HH -- I just don't want my child to be the oldest in her class...but, I also want her to be developmentally ready for school.

SoccerMom

My son's birthday is September 5th, so he's the oldest in his class...he's 8 and in the 2nd grade. It was a tough decision whether to hold him back or not, because I think he was really ready, but in the end, we decided to wait another year and I'm so glad we did! He started kindergarten with 2 yrs of preschool under his belt and adjusted really easily. He's now in the gifted program at school and I'm one proud mama!!

Gryphon

SoccerMom...is your son in Raleigh County schools? (Im relying on an increasingly bad memory, but I think you said you were from Beckley!)
How do they do gifted there now? Is it still a once a week thing...or is it all the time?

SoccerMom

He is, Gryphon...and that memory of yours isn't so bad, I work in Beckley, but actually live in Daniels.
He attends Daniels Elementary, which is a really great school. He has his gifted class every Thursday...so yep, just once a week. He also has speech class twice a week, so needless to say, our evenings are homework packed!

Gryphon

I was in that program when I was young...it was awesome and some of my best school memories are of the classes I took there. (I remember feeling like the teachers at gifted treated me much more like a "grown up".)  If its anything like it used to be, it will be a real confidence builder for him.

I didnt attend Daniels, but one of the years I was in the program, thats where the gifted center was. (it was moved every year it seemed...the old Hollywood school, Bradley, then Daniels)

SoccerMom

So they had a gifted center then? I guess I'm not familiar with that term...I just assumed every school had a gifted teacher that taught students at that school. His teacher last yr alternated between Daniels and Stanaford Elementary, but his current teacher seems to be at Daniels full time.

He definitely enjoys it, but he's one of those kids who doesn't want to be "different", so I worried that pulling him out of his regular class 3 times a week, for gifted and for speech, would be a bit much. So far it's working out well, so we'll see.....

Gryphon

yeah, they would bus all the kids in from various schools...one day a week. (You remind me...it was at Stanaford one year too)
If they have a teacher and a class at every school now, thats great. Though I will say that the program allowed me to meet kids from other schools that I wouldnt otherwise have met.
Does he have to make up the work from "regular" classes when he is gone to gifted?

Sunny

Our school system called it "Project Enhanced" rather than gifted...and we went to a university once a week.
