I think the answer to this question depends on who you are.

Wouldn't that be subject to each individual's interpretation of what is moral?

Sunny

And doesn't it depend on the operational definition of "moral values"? By who's standards? Of what population?

Henry Hawk

You maybe right,

I guess I was referring to the moral standards that we have known by own childhood.....at least the basics of what is right and what is wrong...

Thanks Henry and FTW, now I know where you're going...

There were three lessons that I remember from my childhood, two of which I apply with my children as well, however from interacting w/other adults and children I know that it isn't standard and perhaps that has to do w/the conditions Sunny previously mentioned.

Lesson one: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Translated to my children - don't do or say something to someone that you wouldn't want done or said to you. If you treat people the way you like to be treated, then more often than not things will go fairly smoothly and you'll earn respect. This rule incorporates/simplifies a lot of issues people have with each other.  I've also added, that action on the part of someone else doesn't justify equal reaction from them. That applies to either following the crowd OR retaliating out of anger. Calm down and think first, always.

Lesson two: There are two things in life which we have NO control over. What people do and what people say (think). So, don't worry about it. The one thing you do have control over is yourself.

The third lesson was "run". If I heard Mom quote the scripture "Spare the rod....". It was time for me to find a good hiding spot.

Would you please provide specific examples or guidelines? (e.g. what is "right" and "wrong"?)

And I would venture to guess that we would need to do a comparison of today to more than 20 years ago...I, for one, spent most of my childhood in the 70's. Well, when my moral values were primarily instilled...

Henry Hawk

fair enough............for me,

I guess, I look at divorce, or marriage if you want...it is a throw away commodity....if things get tough...poo poo it and start over....I know there are many exceptions, and I'm not condoning anyone who has been divorced....cause I know there are time when it is inevitable.
But, I really think, there is a mentality now days, that when things get tough....just leave em....

which leads to the family values so to speak......it seems that there are sooo many one-parent families now days, which leads to many kids not being raised with proper authority.

It also seems as though that, accountablity for one's own actions, no longer is applied....

which makes me think of todays judicial system where if you get a good lawyer, you can beat about any crime out there, and in some cases, sue the person they violated and win..............why is that?

I look at that as moral values....just for starters...

Please define: "family" and "properly".

I'm assuming you consider a "family" a two parent home. I don't see what this ^ has to do w/children being raised "properly".

I realize I need to be careful here, because I know many, many single parents have raised kids tremendously......and some two parent's fail miserably...

This is probably getting back to my Christian beliefs, but not necessarily....I think it is a moral obligation, to raise children with a mom and a dad, if and when it is at all possible.....I at least see the lack of, being a reason for the amount of troubled kids we see today, as opposed 20 or 30 years ago....
