I haven't noticed any big cost increase. That might be due to the fact that we aren't eating out, because it is just too hard to find anything that fits.

I think after you fully commit then eventually you'll have those type things stocked the way you do the groceries you have now. I'm also thinking that much of the beans, peas, and probably other things that I can't think of this early, you can buy in bulk.

My concern is learning how to cook so that it's still tasty. I love portabella mushrooms and I make them on the grill and place them on a whole wheat roll, usually w/grilled peppers and onions and a slice of provolone. It's delicious, but I've added dairy. I haven't tried humus though, but I've been wanting to, so maybe I'll substitute the cheese for humus.

I thought some nuts, for example Almonds, were actually good for the heart. They have fat, but I read it's the good kind and actually helps you lower your blood pressure. ??

At any rate, kudos to you and your wife for being able to fully commit to such an important lifestyle change.

Oh! I forgot what I ate. My daughter left breakfast for me in the fridge. I had a sliced orange and plum (the orange was picked off a tree in a neighbors yard, but her plums won't be ready until August so the plumb was market bought) and a granola bar w/a cup of water w/sliced lemon (also from the neighbor's yard).

Does the neighbor know about all of this pilfering?

Yep!

Although honestly, I don't think she'd notice if sackfuls went missing. These trees often have fruit falling off and it doesn't seem like they ever pick them or use them. I guess they do and maybe it's too much to hand out or use? The plum tree is loaded and I can't wait until they're ready!

We've gone totally vegan. My cholesterol has been steadily climbing. My Dad has a bad heart, his Dad died of a heart attack, and his Dad died of a heart attack. My wife's mom is having some heart issues (and you wouldn't expect it looking at her), and her Mom just died of heart failure. I don't want my kids to have to watch that with me. So, it was time to do something different. One of my Dad's doctors recommended this book to him: http://www.heartattackproof.com/
We are fully into it. Basically, the rules are simple.
Nothing with a mother or a face (no meat, fish, or eggs)
No dairy.
No nuts, except walnuts if you don't already have heart issues.
No oils. None.
You can have all fruits and veggies, whole grains, and all grains and legumes.
It isn't easy, but the studies show that it is very effective.

We are losing weight pretty nicely and feeling really good. I don't get sleepy in the afternoon like I used to. My running has gotten easier and faster. And so on.
Here is what I ate for the day yesterday.
Breakfast: Grapenuts, with fresh fruit (strawberries, grapes, blueberries, cherries, and peaches) with low-fat Soy milk and pulpy OJ
Morning snack: a pink lady apple
Lunch: the above mentioned leftovers from the night before
Afternoon snack: banana
Dinner: a salad made of black beans, roasted sweet corn, red onion, yellow pepper, green onion, garlic, tomatoes, and cilantro seasoned with cumin, salt, pepper, and fresh lime juice. Stuffed that into a fat-free pita with avocado slices. Yum.
That diet would probably kill me LOL!!! More power to ya. Sounds like you're adjusting very well to it. BTW... the not eating anything with a face line cracked me up.

I had a slice of key lime pie the other day...it's rare that I get a taste for pie...but it was sooooooo delicious. I love ice cream though...that sounds like a winner!
